    Towards autonomous mapping in agriculture: A review of supportive technologies for ground robotics

    This paper surveys the supportive technologies currently available for ground mobile robots used for autonomous mapping in agriculture. Unlike previous reviews, we describe state-of-the-art approaches and technologies aimed at extracting information from agricultural environments, not only for navigation purposes but especially for mapping and monitoring. The state-of-the-art platforms and sensors, the modern localization techniques, the navigation and path planning approaches, as well as the potentialities of artificial intelligence towards autonomous mapping in agriculture are analyzed. According to the findings of this review, many examples of recent mobile robots provide full navigation and autonomous mapping capability. Significant resources are currently devoted to this research area, in order to further improve mobile robot capabilities in this complex and challenging field

    Review on Automatic Variable-Rate Spraying Systems Based on Orchard Canopy Characterization

    Pesticide consumption and environmental pollution in orchards can be greatly decreased by combining variable-rate spray treatments with proportional control systems. Nowadays, farmers can use variable-rate canopy spraying to apply weed killers only where they are required which provides environmental friendly and cost-effective crop protection chemicals. Moreover, restricting the use of pesticides as Plant Protection Products (PPP) while maintaining appropriate canopy deposition is a serious challenge. Additionally, automatic sprayers that adjust their application rates to the size and shape of orchard plantations has indicated a significant potential for reducing the use of pesticides. For the automatic spraying, the existing research used an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Also, spraying efficiency can be increased by lowering spray losses from ground deposition and off-target drift. Therefore, this study involves a thorough examination of the existing variable-rate spraying techniques in orchards. In addition to providing examples of their predictions and briefly addressing the influences on spraying parameters, it also presents various alternatives to avoiding pesticide overuse and explores their advantages and disadvantages

    151 p.Un aspecto en el que las plataformas móviles actuales se quedan atrás en comparación con el punto que se ha alcanzado ya en la industria es la precisión. La cuarta revolución industrial trajo consigo la implantación de maquinaria en la mayor parte de procesos industriales, y una fortaleza de estos es su repetitividad. Los robots móviles autónomos, que son los que ofrecen una mayor flexibilidad, carecen de esta capacidad, principalmente debido al ruido inherente a las lecturas ofrecidas por los sensores y al dinamismo existente en la mayoría de entornos. Por este motivo, gran parte de este trabajo se centra en cuantificar el error cometido por los principales métodos de mapeado y localización de robots móviles,ofreciendo distintas alternativas para la mejora del posicionamiento.Asimismo, las principales fuentes de información con las que los robots móviles son capaces de realizarlas funciones descritas son los sensores exteroceptivos, los cuales miden el entorno y no tanto el estado del propio robot. Por esta misma razón, algunos métodos son muy dependientes del escenario en el que se han desarrollado, y no obtienen los mismos resultados cuando este varía. La mayoría de plataformas móviles generan un mapa que representa el entorno que les rodea, y fundamentan en este muchos de sus cálculos para realizar acciones como navegar. Dicha generación es un proceso que requiere de intervención humana en la mayoría de casos y que tiene una gran repercusión en el posterior funcionamiento del robot. En la última parte del presente trabajo, se propone un método que pretende optimizar este paso para así generar un modelo más rico del entorno sin requerir de tiempo adicional para ello

    NASA SBIR abstracts of 1991 phase 1 projects

    The objectives of 301 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1991 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 301, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1991 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included

    Making sense of light: the use of optical spectroscopy techniques in plant sciences and agriculture

    As a result of the development of non-invasive optical spectroscopy, the number of prospective technologies of plant monitoring is growing. Being implemented in devices with different functions and hardware, these technologies are increasingly using the most advanced data processing algorithms, including machine learning and more available computing power each time. Optical spectroscopy is widely used to evaluate plant tissues, diagnose crops, and study the response of plants to biotic and abiotic stress. Spectral methods can also assist in remote and non-invasive assessment of the physiology of photosynthetic biofilms and the impact of plant species on biodiversity and ecosystem stability. The emergence of high-throughput technologies for plant phenotyping and the accompanying need for methods for rapid and non-contact assessment of plant productivity has generated renewed interest in the application of optical spectroscopy in fundamental plant sciences and agriculture. As it is known major purpose of cladding is to separate the indoor environment from the outdoors in such a way that indoor environment conditions can be maintained at level suitable for the buildings intended use. Therefore from the functional point of view it can be defined as, the part of the building that is non load bearing exterior wall that must defend the interior spaces against invasion by water, wind, sun, light, heat and cold, and all the other forces of nature. Besides this it must also fulfill the aesthetic, economic and security consideration. The design of the building façade has become much more complicated with development of new methods of construction, the requirements for a highly controlled interior environments, stress on energy efficiency, advent of materials and new production methods. But it seems that available technologies on ordinary building sector relay on the analog production methods. Analog production process depends on technical drawings and the interpretation of drawings. The human interpretation is the basics of the systems. On the other hand, new design tools that introduced by computer aided design programs proposes new conceptions of space that beyond the limits of Cartesian understanding of form and construction. It is known that computer aided design and production methods are applied pervasively in numerous different sectors. Articulation of computer aided design and manufacturing processes with digitally driven assemblage methods is an important task that is expected to be solved by the building sector. Building envelope systems as being one of the most important building component from the points of both identity and utility of buildings, is has to be reconsidered as a part of the adaptation of whole construction sector. It is also a measure of responsibility on the part of architects. Besides material design, production processes, and connection details of the components with the other parts of the building are the other important dimensions of the envelope systems
