A distortion measure to validate and generate curved high-order meshes on CAD surfaces with independence of parameterization

The proposed framework is of major interest to generate meshes suitable for thin-shell and 3D finite element analysis with unstructured high-order methods. First, we define a distortion (quality) measure for high-order meshes on parameterized surfaces that we prove to be independent of the surface parameterization. Second, we derive a smoothing and untangling procedure based on the minimization of a regularization of the proposed distortion measure. The minimization is performed in terms of the parametric coordinates of the nodes to enforce that the nodes slide on the surfaces. Moreover, the proposed algorithm repairs invalid curved meshes (untangling), deals with arbitrary polynomial degrees (high-order), and handles with low-quality CAD parameterizations (independence of parameterization). Third, we use the optimization procedure to generate curved nodal high-order surface meshes by means of an a posteriori approach. Given a linear mesh, we increase the polynomial degree of the elements, curve them to match the geometry, and optimize the location of the nodes to ensure mesh validity. Discrete curvature approximations and segmentation of polyhedral surfaces
The segmentation of digitized data to divide a free form surface into patches is one of the key steps required to perform a reverse engineering process of an object. To this end, discrete curvature approximations are introduced as the basis of a segmentation process that lead to a decomposition of digitized data into areas that will help the construction of parametric surface patches. The approach proposed relies on the use of a polyhedral representation of the object built from the digitized data input. Then, it is shown how noise reduction, edge swapping techniques and adapted remeshing schemes can participate to different preparation phases to provide a geometry that highlights useful characteristics for the segmentation process. The segmentation process is performed with various approximations of discrete curvatures evaluated on the polyhedron produced during the preparation phases. The segmentation process proposed involves two phases: the identification of characteristic polygonal lines and the identification of polyhedral areas useful for a patch construction process. Discrete curvature criteria are adapted to each phase and the concept of invariant evaluation of curvatures is introduced to generate criteria that are constant over equivalent meshes. Volumetric Untrimming: Precise decomposition of trimmed trivariates into tensor products
3D objects, modeled using Computer Aided Geometric Design tools, are
traditionally represented using a boundary representation (B-rep), and
typically use spline functions to parameterize these boundary surfaces.
However, recent development in physical analysis, in isogeometric analysis
(IGA) in specific, necessitates a volumetric parametrization of the interior of
the object. IGA is performed directly by integrating over the spline spaces of
the volumetric spline representation of the object. Typically, tensor-product
B-spline trivariates are used to parameterize the volumetric domain. A general
3D object, that can be modeled in contemporary B-rep CAD tools, is typically
represented using trimmed B-spline surfaces. In order to capture the generality
of the contemporary B-rep modeling space, while supporting IGA needs, Massarwi
and Elber (2016) proposed the use of trimmed trivariates volumetric elements.
However, the use of trimmed geometry makes the integration process more
difficult since integration over trimmed B-spline basis functions is a highly
challenging task. In this work, we propose an algorithm that precisely
decomposes a trimmed B-spline trivariate into a set of (singular only on the
boundary) tensor-product B-spline trivariates, that can be utilized to simplify
the integration process in IGA. The trimmed B-spline trivariate is first
subdivided into a set of trimmed B\'ezier trivariates, at all its internal
knots. Then, each trimmed B\'ezier trivariate, is decomposed into a set of
mutually exclusive tensor-product B-spline trivariates, that precisely cover
the entire trimmed domain. This process, denoted untrimming, can be performed
in either the Euclidean space or the parametric space of the trivariate. We
present examples on complex trimmed trivariates' based geometry, and we
demonstrate the effectiveness of the method by applying IGA over the

Geometry Modeling for Unstructured Mesh Adaptation
The quantification and control of discretization error is critical to obtaining reliable simulation results. Adaptive mesh techniques have the potential to automate discretization error control, but have made limited impact on production analysis workflow. Recent progress has matured a number of independent implementations of flow solvers, error estimation methods, and anisotropic mesh adaptation mechanics. However, the poor integration of initial mesh generation and adaptive mesh mechanics to typical sources of geometry has hindered adoption of adaptive mesh techniques, where these geometries are often created in Mechanical Computer- Aided Design (MCAD) systems. The difficulty of this coupling is compounded by two factors: the inherent complexity of the model (e.g., large range of scales, bodies in proximity, details not required for analysis) and unintended geometry construction artifacts (e.g., translation, uneven parameterization, degeneracy, self-intersection, sliver faces, gaps, large tolerances be- tween topological elements, local high curvature to enforce continuity). Manual preparation of geometry is commonly employed to enable fixed-grid and adaptive-grid workflows by reducing the severity and negative impacts of these construction artifacts, but manual process interaction inhibits workflow automation. Techniques to permit the use of complex geometry models and reduce the impact of geometry construction artifacts on unstructured grid workflows are models from the AIAA Sonic Boom and High Lift Prediction are shown to demonstrate the utility of the current approach
Data-Driven Shape Analysis and Processing
Data-driven methods play an increasingly important role in discovering
geometric, structural, and semantic relationships between 3D shapes in
collections, and applying this analysis to support intelligent modeling,
editing, and visualization of geometric data. In contrast to traditional
approaches, a key feature of data-driven approaches is that they aggregate
information from a collection of shapes to improve the analysis and processing
of individual shapes. In addition, they are able to learn models that reason
about properties and relationships of shapes without relying on hard-coded
rules or explicitly programmed instructions. We provide an overview of the main
concepts and components of these techniques, and discuss their application to
shape classification, segmentation, matching, reconstruction, modeling and
exploration, as well as scene analysis and synthesis, through reviewing the
literature and relating the existing works with both qualitative and numerical
comparisons. We conclude our report with ideas that can inspire future research
in data-driven shape analysis and processing.Comment: 10 pages, 19 figure
Identifying and remeshing contact interfaces in a polyhedral assembly for digital mock-up applications
Polyhedral models are widely used for applications such as manufacturing, digital simulation or visualization. They are discrete models; easy to store, to manipulate, allowing levels of resolution for visualization. They can be easily exchanged between CAD systems without loss of data. Previous works (Comput Aided Des 29(4):287â298, 1997, Comput Graphics 22(5):565â585, 1998) have focused on simplification process applied to polyhedral part models. The goal of the proposed approach is to extend these processes to polyhedral assembly models, describing the digital mock-up of a future manufacturing product. To apply simplification techniques or other processes on polyhedral assemblies, contact surfaces between interacting objects have to be identified and specific constraints must be applied for processing. The approach proposed allows checking and maintaining a global consistency of the assembly model to ensure the reliability of the future processes. Thus, contacts between objects are detected using an approach that works for a static configuration of the assembly. Finally, a precise detection of the faces involved in each contact area is made and the resulting input domains identified are processed using a local Frontal Delaunay re-meshing technique to produce an identical tessellation on both objects involved in the processed contact. SurfNet: Generating 3D shape surfaces using deep residual networks
3D shape models are naturally parameterized using vertices and faces, \ie,
composed of polygons forming a surface. However, current 3D learning paradigms
for predictive and generative tasks using convolutional neural networks focus
on a voxelized representation of the object. Lifting convolution operators from
the traditional 2D to 3D results in high computational overhead with little
additional benefit as most of the geometry information is contained on the
surface boundary. Here we study the problem of directly generating the 3D shape
surface of rigid and non-rigid shapes using deep convolutional neural networks.
We develop a procedure to create consistent `geometry images' representing the
shape surface of a category of 3D objects. We then use this consistent
representation for category-specific shape surface generation from a parametric
representation or an image by developing novel extensions of deep residual
networks for the task of geometry image generation. Our experiments indicate
that our network learns a meaningful representation of shape surfaces allowing
it to interpolate between shape orientations and poses, invent new shape
surfaces and reconstruct 3D shape surfaces from previously unseen images.Comment: CVPR 2017 pape

PDE-based Facial Animation: Making the Complex Simple
YesDirect parameterisation is among the most widely used facial animation techniques but requires complicated ways to animate face models which have complex topology. This paper develops a simple solution by introducing a PDE-based facial animation scheme. Using a PDE face model means we only need to animate a group of boundary curves without using any other conventional surface interpolation algorithms. We describe the basis of the method and show results from a practical implementation.EPSR
