A Comprehensive Survey of the Tactile Internet: State of the art and Research Directions
The Internet has made several giant leaps over the years, from a fixed to a
mobile Internet, then to the Internet of Things, and now to a Tactile Internet.
The Tactile Internet goes far beyond data, audio and video delivery over fixed
and mobile networks, and even beyond allowing communication and collaboration
among things. It is expected to enable haptic communication and allow skill set
delivery over networks. Some examples of potential applications are
tele-surgery, vehicle fleets, augmented reality and industrial process
automation. Several papers already cover many of the Tactile Internet-related
concepts and technologies, such as haptic codecs, applications, and supporting
technologies. However, none of them offers a comprehensive survey of the
Tactile Internet, including its architectures and algorithms. Furthermore, none
of them provides a systematic and critical review of the existing solutions. To
address these lacunae, we provide a comprehensive survey of the architectures
and algorithms proposed to date for the Tactile Internet. In addition, we
critically review them using a well-defined set of requirements and discuss
some of the lessons learned as well as the most promising research directions
An Industrial Data Analysis and Supervision Framework for Predictive Manufacturing Systems
Due to the advancements in the Information and Communication Technologies field in the
modern interconnected world, the manufacturing industry is becoming a more and more
data rich environment, with large volumes of data being generated on a daily basis, thus
presenting a new set of opportunities to be explored towards improving the efficiency and
quality of production processes.
This can be done through the development of the so called Predictive Manufacturing
Systems. These systems aim to improve manufacturing processes through a combination
of concepts such as Cyber-Physical Production Systems, Machine Learning and real-time
Data Analytics in order to predict future states and events in production. This can be used
in a wide array of applications, including predictive maintenance policies, improving quality
control through the early detection of faults and defects or optimize energy consumption,
to name a few.
Therefore, the research efforts presented in this document focus on the design and development
of a generic framework to guide the implementation of predictive manufacturing
systems through a set of common requirements and components. This approach aims
to enable manufacturers to extract, analyse, interpret and transform their data into actionable
knowledge that can be leveraged into a business advantage. To this end a list
of goals, functional and non-functional requirements is defined for these systems based
on a thorough literature review and empirical knowledge. Subsequently the Intelligent
Data Analysis and Real-Time Supervision (IDARTS) framework is proposed, along with
a detailed description of each of its main components.
Finally, a pilot implementation is presented for each of this components, followed by the
demonstration of the proposed framework in three different scenarios including several use
cases in varied real-world industrial areas. In this way the proposed work aims to provide
a common foundation for the full realization of Predictive Manufacturing Systems

Big data architecture for pervasive healthcare: a literature review
Pervasive healthcare aims to deliver deinstitutionalised healthcare services to patients anytime and anywhere. Pervasive healthcare involves remote data collection through mobile devices and sensor network which the data is usually in large volume, varied formats and high frequency. The nature of big data such as volume, variety, velocity and veracity, together with its analytical capabilities com-plements the delivery of pervasive healthcare. However, there is limited research in intertwining these two domains. Most research focus mainly on the technical context of big data application in the healthcare sector. Little attention has been paid to a strategic role of big data which impacts the quality of healthcare services provision at the organisational level. Therefore, this paper delivers a conceptual view of big data architecture for pervasive healthcare via an intensive literature review to address the aforementioned research problems. This paper provides three major contributions: 1) identifies the research themes of big data and pervasive healthcare, 2) establishes the relationship between research themes, which later composes the big data architecture for pervasive healthcare, and 3) sheds a light on future research, such as semiosis and sense-making, and enables practitioners to implement big data in the pervasive healthcare through the proposed architecture
Connectivity Management for HetNets based on the Principles of Autonomicity and Context-Awareness
Στο περιβάλλον του Διαδικτύου του Μέλλοντος, η Πέμπτη γενιά (5G) δικτύων έχει ήδη αρχίσει να καθιερώνεται. Τα δίκτυα 5G αξιοποιούν υψηλότερες συχνότητες παρέχοντας μεγαλύτερο εύρος ζώνης, ενώ υποστηρίζουν εξαιρετικά μεγάλη πυκνότητα σε σταθμούς βάσης και κινητές συσκευές, σχηματίζοντας ένα περιβάλλον ετερογενών δικτύων, το οποίο στοχεύει στο να καλυφθούν οι απαιτήσεις της απόδοσης ως προς την μικρότερη δυνατή συνολική χρονοκαθυστέρηση και κατανάλωση ενέργειας.
Η αποδοτική διαχείριση της συνδεσιμότητας σε ένα τόσο ετερογενές δικτυακό περιβάλλον αποτελεί ανοιχτό πρόβλημα, με σκοπό να υποστηρίζεται η κινητικότητα των χρηστών σε δίκτυα διαφορετικών τεχνολογιών και βαθμίδων, αντιμετωπίζοντας θέματα πολυπλοκότητας και διαλειτουργικότητας, υποστηρίζοντας τις απαιτήσεις των τρεχουσών εφαρμογών και των προτιμήσεων των χρηστών και διαχειρίζοντας ταυτόχρονα πολλαπλές δικτυακές διεπαφές. Η συλλογή, η μοντελοποίηση, η διεξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων και η κατανομή πληροφορίας περιεχομένου σε σχέση με δεδομένα αισθητήρων θα παίξουν κρίσιμο ρόλο σε αυτήν την πρόκληση.
Με βάση τα παραπάνω, κρίνεται σκόπιμη η αξιοποίηση των αρχών της επίγνωσης περιεχομένου και της αυτονομικότητας, καθώς επιτρέπουν στις δικτυακές οντότητες να είναι ενήμερες του εαυτού τους και του περιβάλλοντός τους, καθώς και να αυτοδιαχειρίζονται τις λειτουργίες τους ώστε να πετυχαίνουν συγκεκριμένους στόχους. Επιπλέον, χρειάζεται ακριβής ποσοτική αξιολόγηση της απόδοσης λύσεων διαχείρισης της συνδεσιμότητας για ετερογενή δίκτυα, οι οποίες παρουσιάζουν διαφορετικές στρατηγικές επίγνωσης περιβάλλοντος, απαιτώντας μια μεθοδολογία που να είναι περιεκτική και γενικά εφαρμόσιμη ώστε να καλύπτει διαφορετικές προσεγγίσεις, καθώς οι υπάρχουσες μεθοδολογίες στην βιβλιογραφία είναι σχετικά περιορισμένες.
Tο σύνολο της μελέτης επικεντρώνεται σε δύο θεματικούς άξονες. Στο πρώτο θεματικό μέρος της διατριβής, αναλύεται ο ρόλος της επίγνωσης περιβάλλοντος και της αυτονομικότητας, σε σχέση με την διαχείριση της συνδεσιμότητας, αναπτύσσοντας ένα πλαίσιο ταξινόμησης και κατηγοριοποίησης, επεκτείνοντας την τρέχουσα βιβλιογραφία. Με βάση το προαναφερθέν πλαίσιο, ταξινομήθηκαν και αξιολογήθηκαν λύσεις για την υποστήριξη της κινητικότητας σε ετερογενή δίκτυα, οι οποίες δύνανται να θεωρηθούν ότι παρουσιάζουν επίγνωση περιβάλλοντος και αυτο-διαχειριστικά χαρακτηριστικά. Επιπλέον, μελετήθηκε κατά πόσον οι αποφάσεις που λαμβάνονται ως προς την επιλογή του κατάλληλου δικτύου, σύμφωνα με την κάθε λύση, είναι αποτελεσματικές και προτάθηκαν τρόποι βελτιστοποίησης των υπαρχουσών αρχιτεκτονικών, καθώς και προτάσεων προς περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη σχετικών μελλοντικών λύσεων.
Στο δεύτερο θεματικό μέρος της διατριβής, αναπτύχθηκε μια ευέλικτη αναλυτική μεθοδολογία, περιλαμβάνοντας όλους τους παράγοντες που μπορούν να συνεισφέρουν στην συνολική χρονοκαθυστέρηση, λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν την σηματοδοσία, την επεξεργαστική επιβάρυνση και την συμφόρηση (μελέτη ουράς), επεκτείνοντας την τρέχουσα βιβλιογραφία. Η μεθοδολογία είναι περιεκτική, ενώ ταυτόχρονα προσφέρει κλειστού τύπου λύσεις και έχει την δυνατότητα να προσαρμόζεται σε διαφορετικές προσεγγίσεις. Προς απόδειξη αυτού, εφαρμόσαμε την μεθοδολογία σε δύο λύσεις με διαφορετική στρατηγική επίγνωσης περιβάλλοντος (μια μεταδραστική και μια προδραστική). Και για τις δύο προσεγγίσεις, τα αναλυτικά αποτελέσματα επιβεβαιώθηκαν από προσομοιώσεις, επιβεβαιώνοντας την αποτελεσματικότητα και την ακρίβεια της αναλυτικής μεθοδολογίας. Επιπλέον, αποδείχθηκε ότι η προδραστική προσέγγιση εμφανίζει καλύτερη απόδοση ως προς την συνολική χρονοκαθυστέρηση, ενώ χρειάζεται σημαντικά λιγότερους επεξεργαστικούς πόρους, παρουσιάζοντας πιθανά οφέλη και στην συνολική ενεργειακή κατανάλωση και στα λειτουργικά και κεφαλαιουχικά κόστη (OPEX και CAPEX)

Big data academic and learning analytics: connecting the dots for academic excellence in higher education
Purpose
Although big data analytics have great benefits for higher education institutions, due to lack of sufficient evidence on how big data analytics investment can pay off, it is tough for HEIs practitioners to realize value from such adoption. The current study proposes a big data academic and learning analytics enabled business value model to explain big data analytics potential benefits and business value which can be obtained by developing such analytics capabilities in HEIs.
Design/methodology/approach
The study examined 47 case descriptions from 26 HEIs to investigate the causal association between the big data analytics current and potential benefits and business value creation path for big data academic and learning analytics success in higher education institutions.
Findings
The pressure of compliance with all legal & regulatory requirements and competition had pushed higher education institutions hard to adopt BDA tools. However, the study found out that application of risk & security and predictive analytics to higher education fields is still in its infancy. Using this theoretical model, our results provide new insights to higher education administrators on ways to create big data analytics capabilities for higher education institutions transformation and suggest an empirical foundation that can lead to more thorough analysis of big data analytics implementation.
Originality/value
A distinctive theoretical contribution of this study is its conceptualization of understanding business value from big data analytics in the typical setting of higher education. The study provides HEIs with an all-inclusive understanding of big data analytics and gives insights on how it helps to transform HEIs. The new perspectives associated with the big data academic and learning analytics enabled business value model will contribute to future research in this area
A Building Information Modeling (BIM)-centric Digital Ecosystem for Smart Airport Life Cycle Management
An increasing number of new airport infrastructure construction and improvement projects are being delivered in today\u27s modern world. However, value creation is a recurring issue due to inefficiencies in managing capital expenditures (CapEx) and operating expenses (OpEx), while trying to optimize project constraints of scope, time, cost, quality, and resources. In this new era of smart infrastructure, digitalization transforms the way projects are planned and delivered. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a key digital process technique that has become an imperative for today\u27s Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations (AECO) sector. This research suggests a BIM-centric digital ecosystem by detailing technical and strategic aspects of Airport BIM implementation and digital technology integration from a life cycle perspective. This research provides a novel approach for consistent and continuous use of digital information between business and functional levels of an airport by developing a digital platform solution that will enable seamless flow of information across functions. Accordingly, this study targets to achieve three objectives: 1- To provide a scalable know-how of BIM-enabled digital transformation; 2- To guide airport owners and major stakeholders towards converging information siloes for airport life cycle data management by an Airport BIM Framework; 3- To develop a BIM-based digital platform architecture towards realization of an airport digital twin for airport infrastructure life cycle management. Airport infrastructures can be considered as a System of Systems (SoS). As such, Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) with Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is selected as the key methodology towards designing a digital ecosystem. Applying MBSE principles leads to forming an integrating framework for managing the digital ecosystem. Furthermore, this research adopts convergent parallel mixed methods to collect and analyze multiple forms of data. Data collection tools include extensive literature and industry review; an online questionnaire; semi-structured interviews with airport owner parties; focus group discussions; first-hand observations; and document reviews. Data analysis stage includes multiple explanatory case study analyses, thematic analysis, project mapping, percent coverage analysis for coded themes to achieve Objective 1; thematic analysis, cluster analysis, framework analysis, and non-parametric statistical analysis for Objective 2; and qualitative content analysis, non-parametric statistical analysis to accomplish Objective 3. This research presents a novel roadmap toward facilitation of smart airports with alignment and integration of disruptive technologies with business and operational aspects of airports. Multiple comprehensive case study analyses on international large-hub airports and triangulation of organization-level and project-level results systematically generate scalable technical and strategic guidelines for BIM implementation. The proposed platform architecture will incentivize major stakeholders for value-creation, data sharing, and control throughout a project life cycle. Introducing scalability and minimizing complexity for end-users through a digital platform approach will lead to a more connected environment. Consequently, a digital ecosystem enables sophisticated interaction between people, places, and assets. Model-driven approach provides an effective strategy for enhanced decision-making that helps optimization of project resources and allows fast adaptation to emerging business and operational demands. Accordingly, airport sustainability measures -economic vitality, operational efficiency, natural resources, and social responsibility- will improve due to higher levels of efficiency in CapEx and OpEx. Changes in business models for large capital investments and introducing sustainability to supply chains are among the anticipated broader impacts of this study
