    The SGIA and the Common Growing Language

    Human or virtual agents are presented in our lives daily. They serve our purposes and represent us in different many situations. Nowadays the number of virtual agents is increasing daily because they are cheaper, faster and more accurate than human agents. Our aim in this article is to define a new type of intelligent agent called SGIA – Self Growing Intelligent Agent and a new defining language for it.     In this paper, we present new types of web information services, where users and information brokers collaborate in creating a user-adaptive information service. Such services impose a novel task on information brokers: they become responsible for maintaining the inference strategies used in user modeling. In return, information brokers obtain more accurate information about user needs, since the adaptivity ensures that user profiles are kept up to date and consistent with what users actually prefer, not only what they say that they prefer. We illustrate the approach by an example application, in which conference calls are collected and distributed to interested readers

    Ontology acquisition and exchange of evolutionary product-brokering agents

    Agent-based electronic commerce (e-commerce) has been booming with the development of the Internet and agent technologies. However, little effort has been devoted to exploring the learning and evolving capabilities of software agents. This paper addresses issues of evolving software agents in e-commerce applications. An agent structure with evolution features is proposed with a focus on internal hierarchical knowledge. We argue that knowledge base of agents should be the cornerstone for their evolution capabilities, and agents can enhance their knowledge bases by exchanging knowledge with other agents. In this paper, product ontology is chosen as an instance of knowledge base. We propose a new approach to facilitate ontology exchange among e-commerce agents. The ontology exchange model and its formalities are elaborated. Product-brokering agents have been designed and implemented, which accomplish the ontology exchange process from request to integration

    Weaving a fabric of socially aware agents

    The expansion of web-enabled social interaction has shed light on social aspects of intelligence that have not been typically studied within the AI paradigm so far. In this context, our aim is to understand what constitutes intelligent social behaviour and to build computational systems that support it. We argue that social intelligence involves socially aware, autonomous individuals that agree on how to accomplish a common endeavour, and then enact such agreements. In particular, we provide a framework with the essential elements for such agreements to be achieved and executed by individuals that meet in an open environment.     Multi-agent systems for power engineering applications - part 2 : Technologies, standards and tools for building multi-agent systems

    This is the second part of a 2-part paper that has arisen from the work of the IEEE Power Engineering Society's Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) Working Group. Part 1 of the paper examined the potential value of MAS technology to the power industry, described fundamental concepts and approaches within the field of multi-agent systems that are appropriate to power engineering applications, and presented a comprehensive review of the power engineering applications for which MAS are being investigated. It also defined the technical issues which must be addressed in order to accelerate and facilitate the uptake of the technology within the power and energy sector. Part 2 of the paper explores the decisions inherent in engineering multi-agent systems for applications in the power and energy sector and offers guidance and recommendations on how MAS can be designed and implemented. Given the significant and growing interest in this field, it is imperative that the power engineering community considers the standards, tools, supporting technologies and design methodologies available to those wishing to implement a MAS solution for a power engineering problem. The paper describes the various options available and makes recommendations on best practice. It also describes the problem of interoperability between different multi-agent systems and proposes how this may be tackled

    Internet-based Multiagent Architecture

    Research in intelligent agents and multiagent systems that run on the Internet has received increased attention and importance in recent years. Since the Internet continues to grow, intelligent agent technology is progressively being introduced to many Internet-based applications for communications between different applications. The aim of this paper is to present an Internet-based architecture for multiagent systems which offers a communication infrastructure and coordination services for agents to achieve their goals. A structured architecture is proposed to support communication facilities among several agents and coordinate agent activities in distributed environments such as the Internet and Intranets. The architecture consists of 1) Application agents, 2) Communication handler, 3) Knowledge manager, and 4) Repository. (Yuen, et al. 1999; Leung, et al. 1999). These four layers cooperate together and provide common facilities necessary for typical multiagent systems or agent-based applications with various choices. An Internet-based prototype for auditing and detecting unauthorized transactions within an organization over the Internet or an Intranet is implemented to demonstrate the practicability and feasibility of the proposed Internet-based architecture for multiagent systems

    Distributed information management tools allow users to author, disseminate, discover and manage information within large-scale networked environments, such as the Internet. Agent technology provides the flexibility and scalability necessary to develop such distributed information management applications. We present a layered organisation that is shared by the specific applications that we build. Within this organisation we describe an architecture where mobile agents can move across distributed environments, integrate with local resources and other mobile agents, and communicate their results back to the user

    Ontology support for translating negotiation primitives

    In this paper we present an ontology solution to solve the problem of language heterogeneity among negotiating agents during the exchange of messages over Internet. Traditional negotiation systems have been implemented using different syntax and semantics. Our proposal offers a novel solution incorporating an ontology, which serves as a shared vocabulary of negotiation messages; and a translation module that is executed on the occurrence of a misunderstanding. We implemented a service oriented architecture for executing negotiations and conducted experiments incorporating different negotiation messages.
