The taming of the youth : discourse, politics, and fictional representation in the early PRC = 規訓與狂歡的敘事 : 五〇年代大陸文學中的青春論述、政治及小說再現

This essay is a study of the cultural manifestation of youth in the early years of the People\u27s Republic of China (PRC). It does not aim to examine the focus on youth merely as a social phenomenon, but instead considers youth as a symbolic figure that had a profound influence on the conceptions of nationhood and modernity. Focusing on Mao\u27s discourse on youth and its effects on literature and politics, I argue that youth is a discursive constellation that is constructed through endless choices, creations, and readjusting of symbols, images, and representational modes. Its manifestation in literary imagination encodes and enlarges, but also complicates, political engagement as a means of disciplining young people and appropriadng their position in society

Os impactos psicológicos adversos da tecnologia digital: criticando esta bela vida de Schulman a partir de insights pós-modernos

This study aims to examine the psychological effects of digital technology on individuals by analyzing the characters of Jake and Daisy in This Beautiful Life. It also focuses on how the postmodern trend of imbibing the ethos and spirit of late capitalist consumer culture and the commodification of subjectivity put extreme pressure on individuals, leading to their disintegration and degeneration. The study uses the theoretical ideas and insights of leading postmodern theorists, such as Arthur Kroke and David Kroke, to analyze the harmful effects of the postmodern trend of simulating double identity in excess. It explores the causes of the psychic deviations and disintegration of Jake and Daisy within the postmodern context. This research is a qualitative analysis of the novel by using a postmodern theoretical framework to analyze the characters of Jake and Daisy and their actions and choices in the novel. The study finds that the harsh psychological effects of digital technology are evident in the characters of Jake and Daisy. Their unrestrained involvement in the postmodern trend of imbibing the ethos and spirit of late capitalist consumer culture leads to the degeneration and decadence of their psychic integrity. Meanwhile, Daisy's mundane and monotonous life leads her to construct fantasies in her mind, leading her to embark on a sporadic spree of murdering her close friends. The study concludes that the postmodern trend of imbibing the ethos and spirit of late capitalist consumer culture and the commodification of subjectivity have a detrimental effect on individuals' psychological well-being. The lack of postmodern trend to erase the boundary between the normal and the abnormal exacerbates the situation, leading individuals to become cruel and violent.Este estudio tiene como objetivo examinar los efectos psicológicos de la tecnología digital en los individuos, analizando los personajes de Jake y Daisy en This Beautiful Life. También se enfoca en cómo la tendencia posmoderna de absorber el ethos y el espíritu de la cultura de consumo del capitalismo tardío y la mercantilización de la subjetividad ejercen una presión extrema sobre los individuos, lo que lleva a su desintegración y degeneración. El estudio utiliza las ideas teóricas y los conocimientos de los principales teóricos posmodernos, como Arthur Kroke y David Kroke, para analizar los efectos nocivos de la tendencia posmoderna de sobresimular las identidades duales. Developing a Questionnaire to Assess Young Adults\u27 Motivation to Prepare Healthy Foods

This study developed a questionnaire to estimate young adults’ motivation to prepare healthy foods based on the psychological needs identified by the Self-Determination Theory. Participants (n=507; mean age 20.2±1.9 years; 63% female) were recruited to complete the questionnaire. Due to incomplete responses, data from 492 individuals were analyzed (63% female). Racial/ethnic representation was 360 (71%) Caucasian, 78 (15%) African American, 25 (5%) Hispanic/Latino, 41 (8%) other/mixed race, and 3 participants who did not indicate race/ethnicity. Participants were asked to indicate the extent to which they agreed or disagreed with 25 statements using a 5-point Likert scale. Statements evaluated the participants’ intrinsic motivation and perceived competence to prepare healthy foods, perceived autonomy and autonomy support, and feelings of relatedness to peers. Data collected were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), internal consistency reliability using Cronbach’s alpha, and test-retest reliability. A KMO statistic of 0.89 indicated sufficient correlation among items. The EFA returned five factors that explained 56.5% of the variance. All items in the five factors were retained and each factor had acceptable internal consistency (Perceived Competence: α = 0.93; Intrinsic Motivation: α = 0.87; Autonomy Support: α = 0.85; Autonomy: α = 0.78; Relatedness: α = 0.77) and Pearson correlation coefficients indicated acceptable test-retest reliability and ranged from 0.66 to 0.79. The results from this preliminary study suggest that the Young Adult Motivation to Cook Questionnaire has the potential to evaluate the Self-Determination Theory constructs of intrinsic motivation, perceived competence, autonomy support, autonomy, and relatedness. Further testing is necessary to confirm the relationship among the variables and latent constructs and divergent and convergent validity
