Joint Flow and Density Reconstruction in Large Traffic Networks UsingPartial Turning Ratio Information
International audienceWe address the recent problem of state reconstruction in large scale traffic networks using heterogeneous sensor data. First, we deal with the conditions imposed on the number and location of fixed sensors such that all flows in the network can be uniquely reconstructed. We determine the minimum number of sensors needed to solve the problem given partial information of turning ratios, and then we propose a linear time algorithm for their allocation in a network. Using these results in addition to floating car data, we propose a method to reconstruct all traffic density and flow. Finally, the algorithms are tested in a simulated Manhattan-like network
Fusing Loop and GPS Probe Measurements to Estimate Freeway Density
In an age of ever-increasing penetration of GPS-enabled mobile devices, the
potential of real-time "probe" location information for estimating the state of
transportation networks is receiving increasing attention. Much work has been
done on using probe data to estimate the current speed of vehicle traffic (or
equivalently, trip travel time). While travel times are useful to individual
drivers, the state variable for a large class of traffic models and control
algorithms is vehicle density. Our goal is to use probe data to supplement
traditional, fixed-location loop detector data for density estimation. To this
end, we derive a method based on Rao-Blackwellized particle filters, a
sequential Monte Carlo scheme. We present a simulation where we obtain a 30\%
reduction in density mean absolute percentage error from fusing loop and probe
data, vs. using loop data alone. We also present results using real data from a
19-mile freeway section in Los Angeles, California, where we obtain a 31\%
reduction. In addition, our method's estimate when using only the real-world
probe data, and no loop data, outperformed the estimate produced when only loop
data were used (an 18\% reduction). These results demonstrate that probe data
can be used for traffic density estimation
Optimizing city-scale traffic through modeling observations of vehicle movements
The capability of traffic-information systems to sense the movement of
millions of users and offer trip plans through mobile phones has enabled a new
way of optimizing city traffic dynamics, turning transportation big data into
insights and actions in a closed-loop and evaluating this approach in the real
world. Existing research has applied dynamic Bayesian networks and deep neural
networks to make traffic predictions from floating car data, utilized dynamic
programming and simulation approaches to identify how people normally travel
with dynamic traffic assignment for policy research, and introduced Markov
decision processes and reinforcement learning to optimally control traffic
signals. However, none of these works utilized floating car data to suggest
departure times and route choices in order to optimize city traffic dynamics.
In this paper, we present a study showing that floating car data can lead to
lower average trip time, higher on-time arrival ratio, and higher
Charypar-Nagel score compared with how people normally travel. The study is
based on optimizing a partially observable discrete-time decision process and
is evaluated in one synthesized scenario, one partly synthesized scenario, and
three real-world scenarios. This study points to the potential of a "living
lab" approach where we learn, predict, and optimize behaviors in the real
world

Cyclist Detection, Tracking, and Trajectory Analysis in Urban Traffic Video Data
The major objective of this thesis work is examining computer vision and machine learning detection methods, tracking algorithms and trajectory analysis for cyclists in traffic video data and developing an efficient system for cyclist counting. Due to the growing number of cyclist accidents on urban roads, methods for collecting information on cyclists are of significant importance to the Department of Transportation. The collected information provides insights into solving critical problems related to transportation planning, implementing safety countermeasures, and managing traffic flow efficiently. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) employs automated tools to collect traffic information from traffic video data. In comparison to other road users, such as cars and pedestrians, the automated cyclist data collection is relatively a new research area. In this work, a vision-based method for gathering cyclist count data at intersections and road segments is developed. First, we develop methodology for an efficient detection and tracking of cyclists. The combination of classification features along with motion based properties are evaluated to detect cyclists in the test video data. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based detector called You Only Look Once (YOLO) is implemented to increase the detection accuracy. In the next step, the detection results are fed into a tracker which is implemented based on the Kernelized Correlation Filters (KCF) which in cooperation with the bipartite graph matching algorithm allows to track multiple cyclists, concurrently. Then, a trajectory rebuilding method and a trajectory comparison model are applied to refine the accuracy of tracking and counting. The trajectory comparison is performed based on semantic similarity approach. The proposed counting method is the first cyclist counting method that has the ability to count cyclists under different movement patterns. The trajectory data obtained can be further utilized for cyclist behavioral modeling and safety analysis

Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)
This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio
