Accurate angle-of-arrival measurement using particle swarm optimization
As one of the major methods for location positioning, angle-of-arrival (AOA) estimation is a significant technology in radar, sonar, radio astronomy, and mobile communications. AOA measurements can be exploited to locate mobile units, enhance communication efficiency and network capacity, and support location-aided routing, dynamic network management, and many location-based services. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for AOA estimation in colored noise fields and harsh application scenarios. By modeling the unknown noise covariance as a linear combination of known weighting matrices, a maximum likelihood (ML) criterion is established, and a particle swarm optimization (PSO) paradigm is designed to optimize the cost function. Simulation results demonstrate that the paired estimator PSO-ML significantly outperforms other popular techniques and produces superior AOA estimates
Multipath channel identification by using global optimization in ambiguity function domain
Cataloged from PDF version of article.A new transform domain array signal processing technique is proposed for identification of multipath communication channels. The received array element outputs are transformed to delay-Doppler domain by using the cross-ambiguity function (CAF) for efficient exploitation of the delay-Doppler diversity of the multipath components. Clusters of multipath components can be identified by using a simple amplitude thresholding in the delay-Doppler domain. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) can be used to identify parameters of the multipath components in each cluster. The performance of the proposed PSO-CAF technique is compared with the space alternating generalized expectation maximization (SAGE) technique and with a recently proposed PSO based technique at various SNR levels. Simulation results clearly quantify the superior performance of the PSO-CAF technique over the alternative techniques at all practically significant SNR levels. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. CMF-DFE Based Adaptive Blind Equalization Using Particle Swarm Optimization
The channel matched filter (CMF) is the optimum receiver providing the maximum signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the frequency selective channels. The output intersymbol interference (ISI) profile of the CMF convolved by the channel can be blindly obtained by using the autocorrelation of the received signal. Therefore, the inverse of the autocorrelation function can be used to equalize the channel passed through its own CMF. The only missing part to complete the proposed blind operation is the CMF coefficients. Therefore, in this work, the best training algorithm investigation is subjected for blind estimation of the CMF coefficients. The proposed method allows using more effective training algorithms for blind equalizations. However, the expected high performance training is obtained when the swarm intelligence is used. Unlike the stochastic gradient algorithms, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) is known to have fast convergence because its performance is independent of the characteristics of the systems used. The obtained mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER) performances are promising for high performance real-time systems as an alternative to non-blind equalization techniques
Unsupervised Heart-rate Estimation in Wearables With Liquid States and A Probabilistic Readout
Heart-rate estimation is a fundamental feature of modern wearable devices. In
this paper we propose a machine intelligent approach for heart-rate estimation
from electrocardiogram (ECG) data collected using wearable devices. The novelty
of our approach lies in (1) encoding spatio-temporal properties of ECG signals
directly into spike train and using this to excite recurrently connected
spiking neurons in a Liquid State Machine computation model; (2) a novel
learning algorithm; and (3) an intelligently designed unsupervised readout
based on Fuzzy c-Means clustering of spike responses from a subset of neurons
(Liquid states), selected using particle swarm optimization. Our approach
differs from existing works by learning directly from ECG signals (allowing
personalization), without requiring costly data annotations. Additionally, our
approach can be easily implemented on state-of-the-art spiking-based
neuromorphic systems, offering high accuracy, yet significantly low energy
footprint, leading to an extended battery life of wearable devices. We
validated our approach with CARLsim, a GPU accelerated spiking neural network
simulator modeling Izhikevich spiking neurons with Spike Timing Dependent
Plasticity (STDP) and homeostatic scaling. A range of subjects are considered
from in-house clinical trials and public ECG databases. Results show high
accuracy and low energy footprint in heart-rate estimation across subjects with
and without cardiac irregularities, signifying the strong potential of this
approach to be integrated in future wearable devices.Comment: 51 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, 95 references. Under submission at

Space-Time Signal Design for Multilevel Polar Coding in Slow Fading Broadcast Channels
Slow fading broadcast channels can model a wide range of applications in
wireless networks. Due to delay requirements and the unavailability of the
channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), these channels for many
applications are non-ergodic. The appropriate measure for designing signals in
non-ergodic channels is the outage probability. In this paper, we provide a
method to optimize STBCs based on the outage probability at moderate SNRs.
Multilevel polar coded-modulation is a new class of coded-modulation techniques
that benefits from low complexity decoders and simple rate matching. In this
paper, we derive the outage optimality condition for multistage decoding and
propose a rule for determining component code rates. We also derive an upper
bound on the outage probability of STBCs for designing the
set-partitioning-based labelling. Finally, due to the optimality of the
outage-minimized STBCs for long codes, we introduce a novel method for the
joint optimization of short-to-moderate length polar codes and STBCs
