    Human-Centered Content-Based Image Retrieval

    Retrieval of images that lack a (suitable) annotations cannot be achieved through (traditional) Information Retrieval (IR) techniques. Access through such collections can be achieved through the application of computer vision techniques on the IR problem, which is baptized Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). In contrast with most purely technological approaches, the thesis Human-Centered Content-Based Image Retrieval approaches the problem from a human/user centered perspective. Psychophysical experiments were conducted in which people were asked to categorize colors. The data gathered from these experiments was fed to a Fast Exact Euclidean Distance (FEED) transform (Schouten & Van den Broek, 2004), which enabled the segmentation of color space based on human perception (Van den Broek et al., 2008). This unique color space segementation was exploited for texture analysis and image segmentation, and subsequently for full-featured CBIR. In addition, a unique CBIR-benchmark was developed (Van den Broek et al., 2004, 2005). This benchmark was used to explore what and how several parameters (e.g., color and distance measures) of the CBIR process influence retrieval results. In contrast with other research, users judgements were assigned as metric.     Usability aspects of the inside-in approach for ancillary search tasks on the web

    International audienceGiven the huge amount of data available over the Web nowadays, search engines become essential tools helping users to find the information they are looking for. Nonetheless, search engines often return large sets of results which must be filtered by the users to find the suitable information items. However, in many cases, filtering is not enough, as the results returned by the engine require users to perform a secondary search to complement the current information thus featuring ancillary search tasks. Such ancillary search tasks create a nested context for user tasks that increases the articulatory distance between the users and their ultimate goal. In this paper, we analyze the interplay between such ancillary searches and other primary search tasks on the Web. Moreover, we describe the inside-in approach, which aims at reducing the articulatory distance between interleaved tasks by allowing users to perform ancillary search tasks without losing the context. The inside-in approach is illustrated by means of a case study based on ancillary searches of coauthors in a digital library, using an information visualization technique

Überall dort, wo Produkte und Dienstleistungen angeboten, nachgefragt, wahrgenommen und bewertet werden, kommen natürlichsprachige Ausdrücke zum Einsatz. Daraus resultiert ist zum einen, wie bedeutsam es ist, die Varianz textueller Beschreibungen im E-Commerce zu erfassen, zum anderen können die umfangreichen textuellen Ressourcen, die bei E-Commerce-Interaktionen anfallen, im Hinblick auf ein besseres Verständnis natürlicher Sprache herangezogen werden

    Data graphics and interactive information environments

    The flow and exchange of information is characteristic of the digital age. Information is increasingly consumed and produced. It has to be stored, channelled and processed. It also has to be reproduced in new forms again and again. The exponential growth in the volume of digital data has led to new challenges to visualize this data, such that it makes a significant difference to ones understanding of this data. This gain is known as information, which ultimately transforms into knowledge. Information Visualization attempts to create tools and processes that are an aid to cognition. Although this is a relatively new but established discipline, its roots can be traced to developments in the early 17th century, to what are now termed as Data Graphics. As a precursor to modern, dynamic, computer-based visualizations, Data Graphics underpin the science of visualization. This thesis looks at the design principles that govern the construction of historic and contemporary data displays. Although the medium on which Data Graphics have historically been constructed and presented has changed from paper to the computer, design principles have remained the same regardless of the medium or the source of content. The thesis then applies these principles to construct two applications based on large, complex and multivariate data-sets. The first is a proposal for a three-dimensional radar display to visualize Air Traffic Control data. The second application is a visual navigation tool to search within a hypertext document. Both case studies apply design principles inherent in data graphics and utilise human perceptual and cognitive abilities to extract information inherent in data. Finally, both applications are tested by conducting user studies. The contributions of the thesis lie in the construction of the two novel information visualization applications stated above, and by demonstrating that data graphic design principles transcend the medium in which they are produced and presented and can greatly enhance the beauty, efficacy and effectiveness of data displays

    Simple identification tools in FishBase

    Simple identification tools for fish species were included in the FishBase information system from its inception. Early tools made use of the relational model and characters like fin ray meristics. Soon pictures and drawings were added as a further help, similar to a field guide. Later came the computerization of existing dichotomous keys, again in combination with pictures and other information, and the ability to restrict possible species by country, area, or taxonomic group. Today, www.FishBase.org offers four different ways to identify species. This paper describes these tools with their advantages and disadvantages, and suggests various options for further development. It explores the possibility of a holistic and integrated computeraided strategy
