User-profile-based analytics for detecting cloud security breaches
While the growth of cloud-based technologies has benefited the society tremendously, it has also increased the surface area for cyber attacks. Given that cloud services are prevalent today, it is critical to devise systems that detect intrusions. One form of security breach in the cloud is when cyber-criminals compromise Virtual Machines (VMs) of unwitting users and, then, utilize user resources to run time-consuming, malicious, or illegal applications for their own benefit. This work proposes a method to detect unusual resource usage trends and alert the user and the administrator in real time. We experiment with three categories of methods: simple statistical techniques, unsupervised classification, and regression. So far, our approach successfully detects anomalous resource usage when experimenting with typical trends synthesized from published real-world web server logs and cluster traces. We observe the best results with unsupervised classification, which gives an average F1-score of 0.83 for web server logs and 0.95 for the cluster traces
Applications of Machine Learning to Threat Intelligence, Intrusion Detection and Malware
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are emerging technologies with applications to many fields. This paper is a survey of use cases of ML for threat intelligence, intrusion detection, and malware analysis and detection. Threat intelligence, especially attack attribution, can benefit from the use of ML classification. False positives from rule-based intrusion detection systems can be reduced with the use of ML models. Malware analysis and classification can be made easier by developing ML frameworks to distill similarities between the malicious programs. Adversarial machine learning will also be discussed, because while ML can be used to solve problems or reduce analyst workload, it also introduces new attack surfaces
XML Schema-based Minification for Communication of Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) Systems in Cloud Environments
XML-based communication governs most of today's systems communication, due to
its capability of representing complex structural and hierarchical data.
However, XML document structure is considered a huge and bulky data that can be
reduced to minimize bandwidth usage, transmission time, and maximize
performance. This contributes to a more efficient and utilized resource usage.
In cloud environments, this affects the amount of money the consumer pays.
Several techniques are used to achieve this goal. This paper discusses these
techniques and proposes a new XML Schema-based Minification technique. The
proposed technique works on XML Structure reduction using minification. The
proposed technique provides a separation between the meaningful names and the
underlying minified names, which enhances software/code readability. This
technique is applied to Intrusion Detection Message Exchange Format (IDMEF)
messages, as part of Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system
communication hosted on Microsoft Azure Cloud. Test results show message size
reduction ranging from 8.15% to 50.34% in the raw message, without using
time-consuming compression techniques. Adding GZip compression to the proposed
technique produces 66.1% shorter message size compared to original XML

Hierarchical Design Based Intrusion Detection System For Wireless Ad hoc Network
In recent years, wireless ad hoc sensor network becomes popular both in civil
and military jobs. However, security is one of the significant challenges for
sensor network because of their deployment in open and unprotected environment.
As cryptographic mechanism is not enough to protect sensor network from
external attacks, intrusion detection system needs to be introduced. Though
intrusion prevention mechanism is one of the major and efficient methods
against attacks, but there might be some attacks for which prevention method is
not known. Besides preventing the system from some known attacks, intrusion
detection system gather necessary information related to attack technique and
help in the development of intrusion prevention system. In addition to
reviewing the present attacks available in wireless sensor network this paper
examines the current efforts to intrusion detection system against wireless
sensor network. In this paper we propose a hierarchical architectural design
based intrusion detection system that fits the current demands and restrictions
of wireless ad hoc sensor network. In this proposed intrusion detection system
architecture we followed clustering mechanism to build a four level
hierarchical network which enhances network scalability to large geographical
area and use both anomaly and misuse detection techniques for intrusion
detection. We introduce policy based detection mechanism as well as intrusion
