    NMF: A Modeling Framework for the .NET Platform

    For its promises in terms of increased productivity, Modeldriven engineering (MDE) is getting applied increasingly often in both industry and academia. However, most tools currently available are based on the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) and hence based on the Java platform whereas tool support for other platforms is limited. This leads to a language and tool adoption problem for developers of other platforms such as .NET. As a result, few projects on the .NET platform adopt MDE. Furthermore, the limited tool availability introduces a technical barrier in the interoperability between EMF and .NET applications. In this paper, we present the .NET Modeling Framework (NMF), a tool set for model repositories, model-based incrementalization, model transformation, model synchronization and code generation. The framework makes intensive use of the C# language as host language for model transformation and synchronization languages, whereas the model repository serialization is compatible with EMF. This solves the language adoption problem for C# programmers and creates a bridge to the EMF platform

    Mamadani's Fuzzy Inference eMathTeacher: a Tutorial for Active Learning

    An eMathTeacher is an eLearning on–line self–assessment tool that helps users to active learning math concepts and algorithms by themselves, correcting their mistakes and providing them with clues to find the right solution. This paper introduces an example of a new concept on Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) resources, i.e. a tutorial designed under eMathTeacher philosophy for active eLearning Mamdani’s Direct Method, and presents a brief survey on available CAI resources discussing what their influence over students’ behaviour is. It also describes the minimum and complementary requirements an eLearning tool must fulfil to be considered an eMathTeacher as well as the main contributions of this kind of tutorials to the learning processes. Needless to say that, such features as interactivity, visualization and simplicity turn these tools into great value pedagogical instruments

    Probabilistic Methodology and Techniques for Artefact Conception and Development

    The purpose of this paper is to make a state of the art on probabilistic methodology and techniques for artefact conception and development. It is the 8th deliverable of the BIBA (Bayesian Inspired Brain and Artefacts) project. We first present the incompletness problem as the central difficulty that both living creatures and artefacts have to face: how can they perceive, infer, decide and act efficiently with incomplete and uncertain knowledge?. We then introduce a generic probabilistic formalism called Bayesian Programming. This formalism is then used to review the main probabilistic methodology and techniques. This review is organized in 3 parts: first the probabilistic models from Bayesian networks to Kalman filters and from sensor fusion to CAD systems, second the inference techniques and finally the learning and model acquisition and comparison methodologies. We conclude with the perspectives of the BIBA project as they rise from this state of the art

    Gradient and Passive Circuit Structure in a Class of Non-linear Dynamics on a Graph

    We consider a class of non-linear dynamics on a graph that contains and generalizes various models from network systems and control and study convergence to uniform agreement states using gradient methods. In particular, under the assumption of detailed balance, we provide a method to formulate the governing ODE system in gradient descent form of sum-separable energy functions, which thus represent a class of Lyapunov functions; this class coincides with Csisz\'{a}r's information divergences. Our approach bases on a transformation of the original problem to a mass-preserving transport problem and it reflects a little-noticed general structure result for passive network synthesis obtained by B.D.O. Anderson and P.J. Moylan in 1975. The proposed gradient formulation extends known gradient results in dynamical systems obtained recently by M. Erbar and J. Maas in the context of porous medium equations. Furthermore, we exhibit a novel relationship between inhomogeneous Markov chains and passive non-linear circuits through gradient systems, and show that passivity of resistor elements is equivalent to strict convexity of sum-separable stored energy. Eventually, we discuss our results at the intersection of Markov chains and network systems under sinusoidal coupling
