Traballo Fin de Grao en Lingua e Literatura Inglesas. Curso 2018-2019This dissertation intends to be a study on the relevance of the figure of the present Queen of the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II, by focusing on the historical and social circumstances which marked the first period of her long reign as is portrayed in the Netflix original TV series The Crown (created by Peter Morgan in 2016 and still running). An exhaustive and contrastive analysis will be undertaken between the most relevant historical, bibliographical and biographical sources on this subject and their adaptation in the TV show in order to find out the reasons why the directors and the screenwriters reinterpreted Queen Elizabethโ€™s early life in the manner they did and how much is historical truth and how much is fiction. A historical and social introduction to the period will be also included and the analysis will be illustrated with the most relevant extracts taken from the TV serie

Socio-Demographic, Social-Cognitive, Health-Related and Physical Environmental Variables Associated with Context-Specific Sitting Time in Belgian Adolescents: A One-Year Follow-Up Study

INTRODUCTION: More knowledge is warranted about multilevel ecological variables associated with context-specific sitting time among adolescents. The present study explored cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of ecological domains of sedentary behaviour, including socio-demographic, social-cognitive, health-related and physical-environmental variables with sitting during TV viewing, computer use, electronic gaming and motorized transport among adolescents. METHODS: For this longitudinal study, a sample of Belgian adolescents completed questionnaires at school on context-specific sitting time and associated ecological variables. At baseline, complete data were gathered from 513 adolescents (15.0+/-1.7 years). At one-year follow-up, complete data of 340 participants were available (retention rate: 66.3%). Multilevel linear regression analyses were conducted to explore cross-sectional correlates (baseline variables) and longitudinal predictors (change scores variables) of context-specific sitting time. RESULTS: Social-cognitive correlates/predictors were most frequently associated with context-specific sitting time. Longitudinal analyses revealed that increases over time in considering it pleasant to watch TV (p < .001), in perceiving TV watching as a way to relax (p < .05), in TV time of parents/care givers (p < .01) and in TV time of siblings (p < .001) were associated with more sitting during TV viewing at follow-up. Increases over time in considering it pleasant to use a computer in leisure time (p < .01) and in the computer time of siblings (p < .001) were associated with more sitting during computer use at follow-up. None of the changes in potential predictors were significantly related to changes in sitting during motorized transport or during electronic gaming. CONCLUSIONS: Future intervention studies aiming to decrease TV viewing and computer use should acknowledge the importance of the behaviour of siblings and the pleasure adolescents experience during these screen-related behaviours. In addition, more time parents or care givers spent sitting may lead to more sitting during TV viewing of the adolescents, so that a family-based approach may be preferable for interventions. Experimental study designs are warranted to confirm the present findings

Taehyon Choi.Organizations are progressively inquisitive about adjusting social media for their commercial forms, because it is causing noteworthy alter within the working environment. The objective of utilization of social media at office may shift, but the major objective is to create social systems and allow sharing data. The impact of utilization of social media on employees work performance at Sri Lanka Rupavahini TV Organization, the country's national TV, and the interceding impact of an organizational structure are designed to be investigated in this experimental consider. New media is becoming increasingly strong and popular as the media industry in Sri Lanka undergoes daily revolution. This has also had a significant impact on changing the media landscape, leading to increased engagement and activity on social media in particular. Social media has demonstrated that, in the context of Sri Lankan media, the media is indeed the fourth branch of government in any nation. Therefore, establishing a link between social media use and how it affects employees' performance, particularly on the national broadcast, would pave the way for major developments in Sri Lanka's media landscape. In order to investigate the relationship between these two factors, the research set out to determine the answers to these questions. Does the use of social media affect the performance of employees in Sri Lanka's media industry? What percentage of Sri Lanka Rupavahini TV Corporation employees uses social media? What objectives do the SLRC staff members have when using social media? What impact do social media platforms have on SLRC employees' performance? The research was set to use a quantitative approach that included survey questionnaires. Chi Square analysis was used to evaluate data from roughly 85โ€“100 significant surveys. The sample of Rupavahini Staff included 89 respondents, or 89 %, of the actual responder rate. The study's conclusions showed a strong correlation between SLRC employees' performance and their use of social media. However, it has demonstrated that there is no direct correlation between employee satisfaction and social media use. Additionally, it was made clear that SLRC management needs to take decisive action to resolve problems relating to Rupavahini TV personnel' use of social media and job satisfaction. The results of this study are extremely important since they came from the top media organization in Sri Lanka and were conducted by a member of staff at that organization who was studying in public administration at Seoul National University, one of the top universities in the world. As a result, the research will serve as a guide and assist shape the media landscape in Sri Lanka while also providing policymakers with an opportunity to carefully consider the research's conclusions and take necessary action. Parenting style, the home environment, and screen time of 5-year-old children; the 'be active, eat right' study

    Get PDF
Introduction: The global increase in childhood overweight and obesity has been ascribed partly to increases in children's screen time. Parents have a large influence on their children's screen time. Studies investigating parenting and early childhood screen time are limited. In this study, we investigated associations of parenting style and the social and physical home environment on watching TV and using computers or game consoles among 5-year-old children. Methods: This study uses baseline data concerning 5-year-old children (n = 3067) collected for the 'Be active, eat right' study. Results: Children of parents with a higher score on the parenting style dimension involvement, were more likely to spend >30 min/day on computers or game consoles. Overall, families with an authoritative or authoritarian parenting style had lower percentages of children's screen time compared to families with an indulgent or neglectful style, but no significant difference in OR was found. In families with rules about screen time, children were less likely to watch TV>2 hrs/day and more likely to spend >30 min/day on computers or game consoles. The number of TVs and computers or game consoles in the household was positively associated with screen time, and children with a TV or computer or game console in their bedroom were more likely to watch TV>2 hrs/day or spend >30 min/day on computers or game consoles. Conclusion: The magnitude of the association between parenting style and screen time of 5-year-olds was found to be relatively modest. The associations found between the social and physical environment and children's screen time are independent of parenting style. Interventions to reduce children's screen time might be most effective when they support parents specifically with introducing family rules related to screen time and prevent the presence of a TV or computer or game console in the child's room

ABSTRACT ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SEDENTARY BEHAVIORS AND BMI IN US ADOLESCENTS: ANALYSIS OF THE 2015 YOUTH RISK BEHAVIOR SURVEY By SARAH SADRUDDIN KABANI April 27, 2017 INTRODUCTION: Research has shown a strong link between sedentary behaviors and obesity among adolescents. AIM: This study aims: 1) To determine sedentary behaviors in US high school adolescent nationally 2) To determine the association between sedentary behaviors and BMI after controlling for demographics, recreational behaviors, diet, and physical activity 3) To examine the association between engaging in more than one sedentary behavior and BMI after controlling for demographics, recreational behaviors, diet, and physical activity METHODS: The Youth Risk Behavioral Survey (YRBS) 2015 data was utilized in this study by using weighted percentages to determine the association between sedentary behaviors and BMI while controlling for demographics such as age, sex, race, and grade, recreational behaviors such as smoking and alcohol consumption, diet such as fruit, vegetable, and soda consumption, and physical activity. Univariate logistic regressions and multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to determine the association between sedentary behaviors and BMI. Adjusted and unadjusted odds ratio, 95% confidence intervals, and p-values were calculated. RESULTS: 81.6% of adolescents watched TV during a school day, while 18.4% did not watch TV during a school day. For video games/computer usage/social media (PG) usage, 82.6% engaged in PG usage during a school day, while 17.4% did not engage in PG usage during a school day. When stratifying by BMI, overweight adolescents and obese adolescents have significantly different sex distribution (p=\u3c0.0001), race/ethnicity distribution (p=0.047), TV usage during a school day (p=0.04), PG usage during a school day (p=0.047), and TV & PG usage during a school day (p=\u3c0.02). For TV & PG usage during the school days, adolescents who watch TV and PG, were at higher odds of being obese [AOR =1.3 (1.04, 1.6), p = 0.02] when comparing to adolescents who did not watch TV and PG. DISCUSSION: This study concludes that there is an association between obesity and adolescents who watch TV and use video games/computer/social media during a school day. Sociodemographic factors such as some races, age, and gender are also responsible for obesity among adolescents

โ€œBy Order of the Peaky Blindersโ€: A Comparative Analysis of the Real and Fictional Birmingham Gang

Traballo Fin de Grao en Lingua e Literatura Inglesas. Curso 2018-2019The fact that we are living in a golden age of the TV series cannot be overlooked. Almost one hundred new shows per year are being released and more than three hundred and fifty are still broadcasting. Among them, productions with a historical strand stand out both on TV and online channels. Peaky Blinders (2013- ) is one of such TV series, which portraits the history of a gangster family in the 1920's. The show is categorised as historical fiction and claims to have based its plot on the real Peaky Blinders gang which was active mainly in Birmingham from the 1890's to 1930. The aim of this dissertation is a comparative and contrastive analysis between the historical, social and cultural background of the real Peaky Blinders and the reinterpretation of these aspects in the TV show. For this purpose, an introduction to the historical and social background of Birmingham at that time will be included as well as a detailed study of the differences and similarities between the real world of the Peaky Blinders and its adaptation to the screen, which will be illustrated with examples from the series and supported by a comprehensive reading of the most important bibliography on the subject. A second objective will tackle the reasons which led the screenwriter to adapt the history of this gang in one way or another and the issue of how much is real history and how much is fictio

Digital Large Screens as a Community Medium: Interactivity and Community Relevance in Focus

    Get PDF
Introduction The digital age has made the public sphere a victim of perpetual change. Nigeria, especially in the cities, is playing hosts to large digital screens, primarily serving as billboards and information outposts, relaying TV signals or playing some videos. These screens have the capacity to promote social interactivity in the communities where they are sited. If this interactivity is provable, issues such as media ownership and commoditization which, for over the years, have posed serious threats to free flow of information and freedom of speech will have mitigated ramification as civic vitality based on participation is promoted

Socio-Ecological Variables Associated with Context-Specific Sitting Time in Belgian Older Adults: A One-Year Follow-Up Study

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: Knowledge about variables associated with context-specific sitting time in older adults is limited. Therefore, this study explored cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of socio-demographic, social-cognitive, physical-environmental and health-related variables with sitting during TV viewing, computer use and motorized transport in older adults. METHODS: A sample of Belgian older adults completed structured interviews on context-specific sitting time and associated variables using a longitudinal study design. Objective measurements of grip strength and physical performance were also completed. Complete baseline data were available of 258 participants (73.98+/-6.16 years) of which 229 participants remained in the study at one year follow-up (retention rate: 91.60%). Cross-sectional correlates (baseline data) and longitudinal predictors (change-scores in relation with change in sitting time) were explored through multiple linear regression analyses. RESULTS: Per context-specific sitting time, most of the cross-sectional correlates differed from the longitudinal predictors. Increases over time in enjoyment of watching TV (+one unit), encouragement of partner to watch less TV (+one unit) and TV time of partner (+30.0 min/day) were associated with respectively 9.1 min/day (p<0.001), 16.0 min/day (p<0.001) and 12.0 min/day (p<0.001) more sitting during TV viewing at follow-up. Increases over time in enjoyment of using a computer (+one unit), the number of smartphones and tablets (+1) and computer use of the partner (+30.0 min/day) were associated with respectively 5.5 min/day (p < .01), 10.4 min/day (p < .05) and 3.0 min/day (p < .05) more sitting during computer use at follow-up. An increase over time in self-efficacy regarding taking a bicycle or walking was associated with 2.9 min/day (p < .05) less sitting during motorized transport at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The results stressed the importance of looking at separate contexts of sitting. Further, the results highlighted the importance of longitudinal research in order to reveal which changes in particular variables predicted changes in context-specific sitting time. Variables at the social-cognitive level were most frequently related to context-specific sitting

Prior to the introduction of websites and social media, professional dance criticism circulated through print publications: newspapers, magazines, and journals. This article examines the current proliferation of screens as platforms for criticism and how theyโ€”mobile devices, laptops, televisions, and computersโ€”shift the frameworks that writers and readerships use to engage with dance. I use the concept of a choreographic apparatus to show how digital technologies generate symbiotic relationships between online contexts and contemporary performance. By focusing on three sitesโ€”thINKingDANCE, On the Boards TV, and Amara Tabor-Smithโ€™s House/Full of Black Womenโ€”I analyze how these platforms challenge widespread assumptions about the disappearance of dance critics
