    Smartphone-based vehicle telematics: a ten-year anniversary

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this recordJust as it has irrevocably reshaped social life, the fast growth of smartphone ownership is now beginning to revolutionize the driving experience and change how we think about automotive insurance, vehicle safety systems, and traffic research. This paper summarizes the first ten years of research in smartphone-based vehicle telematics, with a focus on user-friendly implementations and the challenges that arise due to the mobility of the smartphone. Notable academic and industrial projects are reviewed, and system aspects related to sensors, energy consumption, and human-machine interfaces are examined. Moreover, we highlight the differences between traditional and smartphone-based automotive navigation, and survey the state of the art in smartphone-based transportation mode classification, vehicular ad hoc networks, cloud computing, driver classification, and road condition monitoring. Future advances are expected to be driven by improvements in sensor technology, evidence of the societal benefits of current implementations, and the establishment of industry standards for sensor fusion and driver assessment

    Emerging research directions in computer science : contributions from the young informatics faculty in Karlsruhe

    In order to build better human-friendly human-computer interfaces, such interfaces need to be enabled with capabilities to perceive the user, his location, identity, activities and in particular his interaction with others and the machine. Only with these perception capabilities can smart systems ( for example human-friendly robots or smart environments) become posssible. In my research I\u27m thus focusing on the development of novel techniques for the visual perception of humans and their activities, in order to facilitate perceptive multimodal interfaces, humanoid robots and smart environments. My work includes research on person tracking, person identication, recognition of pointing gestures, estimation of head orientation and focus of attention, as well as audio-visual scene and activity analysis. Application areas are humanfriendly humanoid robots, smart environments, content-based image and video analysis, as well as safety- and security-related applications. This article gives a brief overview of my ongoing research activities in these areas

    Project54 vehicle telematics for remote diagnostics, fleet management and traffic monitoring

    The Project54 system was developed to introduce advanced technologies into the operations of the New Hampshire Department of Safety and other law enforcement agencies. The application of computing, sensing and telecommunication technologies within the Project54 system enables advanced telematics services that can provide benefits to vehicle operators, fleet managers and the public. This thesis describes the implementation of remote diagnostics and fleet management services for the Project54 system and investigates the use of radar equipped police vehicles as traffic probes. Aftermarket diagnostic hardware has been integrated in the Project54 system and software applications have been developed to control the hardware and record diagnostic information. An electronic data entry form has been created for tracking vehicle operating expenses and a vehicle status reporting system is described. Additionally, a traffic congestion scoring method using information from traffic radar units is presented

    RESUMEN La cantidad de dispositivos con capacidad de conexión a Internet crece rápidamente. En la actualidad se dispone de teléfonos móviles basados en tecnología WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) o I-Mode, Agendas Digitales Personales, Kioskos Internet, teléfonos convencionales basados en acceso a la Web por medio de la voz, dispositivos basados en televisión interactiva, electrodomésticos, entre otros. Desarrollar una versión de una aplicación web para cada uno de los dispositivos con conectividad a la Web resulta inviable. Por otra parte, desarrollar aplicaciones web que puedan ser visualizados en forma apropiada y aprovechando al máximo las capacidades del dispositivo se constituye en una tarea compleja. En esta tesis se propone un framework, entendido como un marco de trabajo genérico, que sirva como guía para el desarrollo de portales web pervasivos que puedan ser accedidos desde múltiples dispositivos, evitando el desarrollo de un portal por cada uno y teniendo en cuenta las grandes variaciones pueden existir en sus capacidades. Adicionalmente se ha planteado un modelo de agrupamiento de dispositivos, que permita definir una serie de grupos, así como las características asociadas a los mismos, en forma tal que puedan generarse posteriormente los formatos asociados a estos grupos de dispositivos y no a elementos individuales y se ha propuesto y validado una arquitectura de referencia para el desarrollo de aplicaciones pervasivas, que no genere dependencia de tecnologías de servidor, y que permita incorporar la solución de agrupamiento planteada previamente. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________The purpose of the Ubiquitous or Pervasive Computing - an emergent paradigm of personalized computation- is to obtain device interoperability under different conditions. The devices were designed for different purposes by different companies or from different technological generations. The ever increasing market of web enabled devices has brought up diverse challenges related to the difficulty of visualizing content in a unified form to diverse clients, while at the same time taking into account the great differences in the capacities of these devices. It is not feasible to develop a separate application for each of these devices, simply because the number of different devices is too high and still growing. In the analysis of existing proposals dealing with the modelling of ubiquitous web applications, the link that exists between the logical and conceptual modelling and the physical modelling of the applications is not clear enough, and the way in which the context aspects related to web access from these devices cannot be specified. On the other hand, the available commercial products are supplier-specific. Every future platform change would a costly and painstaking process In this thesis we present a proposal of a framework for the development of web applications that can be accessed from different types of devices, such as PCs, PDAs, mobile phones based on diverse technologies (like WAP and I-Mode) and conventional telephones that access the web through voice gateways and voice portals. The proposed framework serves as a guide for the development of this type of applications and it can be deployed to different server configurations and software development technologies. In order to obtain this objective, a description of diverse theoretical elements related to dynamic generation of information that can be acceded by devices has been made, as well as a description of involved technologies whose hardware, software and connectivity characteristics vary remarkably. The theoretical study was carried out in parallel with tests based on the different technologies used.     Leverage viral growth inherent in mobile peer-to-peer telematics to strategic advantage

    Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering; in conjunction with the Leaders for Manufacturing Program at MIT, 2004.Includes bibliographical references (p. 136-139).Telematics, defined as the vehicle features and services made available through a wireless connection to data or other resources not onboard the vehicle, provides one of the most promising areas of innovation and value creation in the automobile market today. However, up to now the US market has only experienced successful telematics businesses in the quazi-insurance field of Safety and Security. In contrast, Consumer Telematics, defined as the confluence of consumer electronics and vehicle telematics, presents a much more exciting market opportunity. In spite of this, inadequate bandwidth, poor usability, fragmented standards and excessive cost have together created sufficient barriers so as to deter any automakers from entering the market. In this thesis, we argue that the viral growth inherent in Wi-Fi class mobile peer-to-peer (mP2P) telematics presents an opportunity for an automotive OEM with significant marketshare to transcend these barriers, and thus capture significant value from this up-to-now elusive market. To do so, we analyze the proposed business through the filters of technology, value chain, applications and market dynamics in order to craft a comprehensive strategy for entering the market and insuring sustained return through its maturation. The technology analysis both presents the potential benefits and limitations of mP2P as well as likely competitors and substitutes. It suggests that mP2P has a sustainable cost and bandwidth advantage over other architectures. Our examination of the Telematics value chain indicates that the wireless connectivity and IP backhaul segments of the chain are predisposed towards commodization and thus should be outsourced in a manner that retains flexibility to switch carriers and even technologies as the market(cont.) evolves. By segmenting the most promising applications according to their connectivity demands, we plot out how service offerings should evolve in concert with the quality of wireless connectivity and market adoption. Finally, analyzing the market dynamics indicates the critical mass threshold where customer willingness-to-pay exceeds the cost, and thus the trade-offs between investment and strategy necessary for success. We conclude that this critical mass where viral growth ensues exists at only 3-5% market penetration, a target easily achieved by an Automotive OEM with dominant marketshare such as General Motors. The proposed strategy resulting from this analysis endeavors to ensure sustained return by embracing an evolving business model. While initial value is captured through vehicle differentiation, it then shifts to primarily service revenue. Eventually, if the business is successful in garnering widespread adoption, value would eventually be principally derived through hardware licensing and operating system revenue. In the end, the key to success for the OEM is to set aside its traditional ways of doing business in order to leverage the complementary market forces that drive viral growth.
