Interactive Visualization of Graph Pyramids
Hierarchies of plane graphs, called graph pyramids, can be used for collecting, storing and analyzing geographical information based on satellite images or other input data. The visualization of graph pyramids facilitates studies about their structure, such as their vertex distribution or height in relation of a specific input image. Thus, a researcher can debug algorithms and ask for statistical information. Furthermore,
it improves the better understanding of geographical data, like landscape properties or thematical maps.
In this paper, we present an interactive 3D visualization tool that supports several coordinated views on graph pyramids, subpyramids, level graphs, thematical maps, etc. Additionally, some implementation details and application results are discussed
Scale Stain: Multi-Resolution Feature Enhancement in Pathology Visualization
Digital whole-slide images of pathological tissue samples have recently
become feasible for use within routine diagnostic practice. These gigapixel
sized images enable pathologists to perform reviews using computer workstations
instead of microscopes. Existing workstations visualize scanned images by
providing a zoomable image space that reproduces the capabilities of the
microscope. This paper presents a novel visualization approach that enables
filtering of the scale-space according to color preference. The visualization
method reveals diagnostically important patterns that are otherwise not
visible. The paper demonstrates how this approach has been implemented into a
fully functional prototype that lets the user navigate the visualization
parameter space in real time. The prototype was evaluated for two common
clinical tasks with eight pathologists in a within-subjects study. The data
reveal that task efficiency increased by 15% using the prototype, with
maintained accuracy. By analyzing behavioral strategies, it was possible to
conclude that efficiency gain was caused by a reduction of the panning needed
to perform systematic search of the images. The prototype system was well
received by the pathologists who did not detect any risks that would hinder use
in clinical routine
Representing Nodes and Arcs in 3D Networks
This paper introduces six graphical principles for 30 network displays. These are justified with examples from GraphVisualizer3D, a system developed by the authors to investigate the problems of 30 visualization of information networks. GraphVisualizer3D enables the exploration of sulface color, surface texture, object shape, arc shape and labeling conventions

From 08.05.05 to 13.05.05, the Dagstuhl Seminar 05191 ``Graph Drawing\u27\u27 was held
in the International Conference and Research Center (IBFI), Schloss Dagstuhl.
During the seminar, several participants presented their current
research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of
the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of
seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section
describes the seminar topics and goals in general.

Visual Analytics for Epidemiologists: Understanding the Interactions Between Age, Time, and Disease with Multi-Panel Graphs
Visual analytics, a technique aiding data analysis and decision making, is a novel tool that allows for a better understanding of the context of complex systems. Public health professionals can greatly benefit from this technique since context is integral in disease monitoring and biosurveillance. We propose a graphical tool that can reveal the distribution of an outcome by time and age simultaneously.We introduce and demonstrate multi-panel (MP) graphs applied in four different settings: U.S. national influenza-associated and salmonellosis-associated hospitalizations among the older adult population (â„65 years old), 1991-2004; confirmed salmonellosis cases reported to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for the general population, 2004-2005; and asthma-associated hospital visits for children aged 0-18 at Milwaukee Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, 1997-2006. We illustrate trends and anomalies that otherwise would be obscured by traditional visualization techniques such as case pyramids and time-series plots.MP graphs can weave together two vital dynamics--temporality and demographics--that play important roles in the distribution and spread of diseases, making these graphs a powerful tool for public health and disease biosurveillance efforts
A semantic-based platform for the digital analysis of architectural heritage
This essay focuses on the fields of architectural documentation and digital representation. We present a research paper concerning the development of an information system at the scale of architecture, taking into account the relationships that can be established between the representation of buildings (shape, dimension, state of conservation, hypothetical restitution) and heterogeneous information about various fields (such as the technical, the documentary or still the historical one). The proposed approach aims to organize multiple representations (and associated information) around a semantic description model with the goal of defining a system for the multi-field analysis of buildings
Halcyon -- A Pathology Imaging and Feature analysis and Management System
Halcyon is a new pathology imaging analysis and feature management system
based on W3C linked-data open standards and is designed to scale to support the
needs for the voluminous production of features from deep-learning feature
pipelines. Halcyon can support multiple users with a web-based UX with access
to all user data over a standards-based web API allowing for integration with
other processes and software systems. Identity management and data security is
