The Sound Manifesto
Computing practice today depends on visual output to drive almost all user
interaction. Other senses, such as audition, may be totally neglected, or used
tangentially, or used in highly restricted specialized ways. We have excellent
audio rendering through D-A conversion, but we lack rich general facilities for
modeling and manipulating sound comparable in quality and flexibility to
graphics. We need co-ordinated research in several disciplines to improve the
use of sound as an interactive information channel.
Incremental and separate improvements in synthesis, analysis, speech
processing, audiology, acoustics, music, etc. will not alone produce the
radical progress that we seek in sonic practice. We also need to create a new
central topic of study in digital audio research. The new topic will assimilate
the contributions of different disciplines on a common foundation. The key
central concept that we lack is sound as a general-purpose information channel.
We must investigate the structure of this information channel, which is driven
by the co-operative development of auditory perception and physical sound
production. Particular audible encodings, such as speech and music, illuminate
sonic information by example, but they are no more sufficient for a
characterization than typography is sufficient for a characterization of visual

An acoustic multi-touch sensing method using amplitude disturbed ultrasonic wave diffraction patterns
This paper proposes an acoustic multi-touch tactile sensing method. The proposed method is based on an amplitude disturbed ultrasonic wave diffraction pattern. An A0 Lamb wave transmitted in a thin finite copper plate is processed to provide tactile information, for one or two fingers. A touch event is localized by identifying the diffraction signals among a database of diffracted Lamb wave references. Statistic models are used to improve the localization reliability. An artificial silicone finger is used in the calibration procedure. This touch interface is evaluated as a 2-touch interface

Corpus-Based Transcription as an Approach to the Compositional Control of Timbre
Timbre space is a cognitive model useful to address the problem of structuring timbre in electronic music. The recent concept of corpus-based concatenative sound synthesis is proposed as an approach to timbral control in both real- and deferred-time applications. Using CataRT and related tools in the FTM and Gabor libraries for Max/MSP we describe a technique for real-time analysis of a live signal to pilot corpus-based synthesis, along with examples of compositional realizations in works for instruments, electronics, and sound installation. To extend this technique to computer-assisted composition for acoustic instruments, we develop tools using the Sound Description Interchange Format (SDIF) to export sonic descriptors to OpenMusic where they may be further manipulated and transcribed into an instrumental score. This presents a flexible technique for the compositional organization of noise-based instrumental sounds
Military applications of automatic speech recognition and future requirements
An updated summary of the state-of-the-art of automatic speech recognition and its relevance to military applications is provided. A number of potential systems for military applications are under development. These include: (1) digital narrowband communication systems; (2) automatic speech verification; (3) on-line cartographic processing unit; (4) word recognition for militarized tactical data system; and (5) voice recognition and synthesis for aircraft cockpit
