    Get PDF
The introduction of information technologies in the environmental field is impacting and changing even a traditional sector like agriculture. Nevertheless, Agriculture 4.0 and data-driven decisions should meet user needs and expectations. The paper presents a broad theoretical overview, discussing both the strategic role of design applied to Agri-tech and the issue of User Interface and Interaction as enabling tools in the field. In particular, the paper suggests to rethink the HCD approach, moving on a Human-Decentered Design approach that put together user-technology-environment and the importance of the role of calm technologies as a way to place the farmer, not as a final target and passive spectator, but as an active part of the process to aim the process of mitigation, appropriation from a traditional cultivation method to the 4.0 one

Sustainable gardens for smart cities using low-power communications

    Get PDF
This paper presents a study on smart gardens in the context of smart cities, a topic that has been gaining more and more interest from the public due to the numerous problems that are felt both in terms of the environment and in terms of food consumption which, due to population increase and migration towards cities, has become a sustainability problem as agricultural production is moving further away from the consumers thus making it harder to obtain fresh good such as fruits and vegetables. Using IoT combined with communication technologies such as LoRa that have Low-power and wide-area network capabilities, it is possible to create systems that enhance sustainability through a more efficient use of resources while also making its users be more involved with the plant cultivation process and, therefore, develop more empathy towards this topic and nature in general. Several smart garden systems and contexts in which those systems are implemented will be analyzed to understand what can be done within this research field.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Modified Context Aware Middleware Architecture for Precision Agriculture

    Get PDF
The opportunities for researchers are enhanced with the progression in the technology of communication and computing. The ease in life of many people like farmers, educators, administers, managers, etc., is increased with more inventions of the researchers using this new technology. The progressive technology for data management is providing more amount of information. However, is the user able to access the needed information when required? This question rises to the more questions like, how to identify whether the information is as per the requirement? Whether a user is authorized or not? The answer for all the questions is to make the support aware of the context. Therefore, the present technology needs to be modified to make the system aware about the context. The process of demonstrating the services based on the context using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) with the help of illustration on mango crop is emphasized in this paper. There are many serious problems like unsuitable fertilizer use, wrong selection of crops in wrong seasons, water waste, poor publicizing in the case of farming. These problems are addressed using the ubiquitous context aware middleware architecture for precision agriculture in mango crop

Traceable Ecosystem and Strategic Framework for the Creation of an Integrated Pest Management System for Intensive Farming

    Get PDF
The appearance of pests is one of the major problems that exist in the growth of crops, as they can damage the production if the appropriate measures are not taken. Within the framework of the Integrated Pest Management strategy (IPM), early detection of pests is an essential step in order to provide the most appropriate treatment and avoid losses. This paper proposes the architecture of a system intensive farming in greenhouses featuring the ability to detect environmental variations that may favour the appearance of pests. This system can suggest a plan or treatment that will help mitigate the effects that the identified pest would produce otherwise. Furthermore, the system will learn from the actions carried out by the humans throughout the different stages of crop growing and will add it as knowledge for the prediction of future actions. The data collected from sensors, through computer vision, or the experiences provided by the experts, along with the historical data related to the crop, will allow for the development of a model that contrasts the predictions of the actions that could be implemented with those already performed by technicians. Within the technological ecosystems in which the Integrated Pest Management systems develop their action, traceability models must be incorporated. This will guarantee that the data used for the exploitation of the information and, therefore for the parameterization of the predictive models, are adequate. Thus, the integration of blockchain technologies is considered key to provide them with security and confidence

Optimizing Onion Crop Management: A Smart Agriculture Framework with IoT Sensors and Cloud Technology

    Get PDF
Smart agriculture, fueled by the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud technology, has revolutionized modern farming practices. In this study, we propose a step-by-step framework for optimizing onion crop management using IoT sensors and cloud-based solutions. By deploying various IoT sensors, including soil moisture, temperature, humidity, and aerial drones, essential data about the onion crops is collected and transmitted to a central data hub. Optional edge computing devices enable real-time data processing, minimizing latency and bandwidth usage. The collected data is aggregated and stored securely on a cloud platform, which facilitates advanced data analysis and insights. Utilizing machine learning algorithms, the cloud platform can provide valuable information about the onion's growth patterns, health status, and growth trajectory. Farmers can easily access this information through a user-friendly dashboard, accessible via web or mobile applications.Automated alerts and notifications enable timely intervention, notifying farmers about any deviations from optimal conditions, such as low moisture levels or pest infestations. The system's predictive capabilities allow for precision irrigation and nutrient management, optimizing resource usage and improving crop health. The accumulated historical data offers a wealth of information, enabling the identification of trends and the prediction of growth patterns for future planting seasons. Throughout this process, data security and privacy measures are prioritized, with encrypted data transmission and storage to protect farmers' sensitive information. The integration of IoT and cloud technology provides an efficient and effective solution for monitoring onion crop growth. The proposed framework offers farmers valuable insights, improves productivity, and promotes sustainable agricultural practices

Advancement of a smart fibrous capillary irrigation management system with an Internet of Things integration

    Get PDF
This paper presents the development work for integrating an Internet of Things (IoT) with a fibrous capillary irrigation system based on the climatic demand estimated by the weather condition. The monitoring and control using an IoT system is critical for such application that is targeted for precision irrigation. The fibrous capillary irrigation system is managed by manipulating a water supply depth using the potential evapotranspiration (ETo). A soil mositure sensor was used to monitor the progress of the root water uptake and input the fuzzy logic system, to determine the water requirements for the crop medium. Experiment was conducted by using a Choy sum plant as the test crop grown in a greenhouse. The monitoring of the demand and management of the watering system was successful. The ETo data was able to approximate the crop water requirement in near real time

Understanding the use of emerging technologies in the agrifood industry: a case study

    Get PDF
The research aim is to understand how emerging technologies, and in particular the blockchain, affect business organization in the agrifood industry. In particular, it explores how decentration, distribution and digitalization ledged could be integrated in the precision agriculture in order to allow organizations to share information with stakeholder, to improve relationship with customers, and to develop a network with other firms. After, reviewing the IS literature on emerging technologies in agri-food industry, with peculiar reference to the blockchain technology for precision agriculture, it is analyzed the case of BioLu, a small innovative Italian farm located in Campa- nia Region. Our results shown how emerging technologies support precision ag- riculture through data collection and exploitation for entrepreneur (e.g., decision- making) and consumers (e.g., food traceability), rather than agrifood supply chain

open access articleThis paper presents research challenges on security and privacy issues in the field of green IoT-based agriculture. We start by describing a four-tier green IoT-based agriculture architecture and summarizing the existing surveys that deal with smart agriculture. Then, we provide a classification of threat models against green IoT-based agriculture into five categories, including, attacks against privacy, authentication, confidentiality, availability, and integrity properties. Moreover, we provide a taxonomy and a side-by-side comparison of the state-of-the-art methods toward secure and privacy-preserving technologies for IoT applications and how they will be adapted for green IoT-based agriculture. In addition, we analyze the privacy-oriented blockchain-based solutions as well as consensus algorithms for IoT applications and how they will be adapted for green IoT-based agriculture. Based on the current survey, we highlight open research challenges and discuss possible future research directions in the security and privacy of green IoT-based agriculture
