Searching Data: A Review of Observational Data Retrieval Practices in Selected Disciplines
A cross-disciplinary examination of the user behaviours involved in seeking
and evaluating data is surprisingly absent from the research data discussion.
This review explores the data retrieval literature to identify commonalities in
how users search for and evaluate observational research data. Two analytical
frameworks rooted in information retrieval and science technology studies are
used to identify key similarities in practices as a first step toward
developing a model describing data retrieval
Visual articulation of navigation and search systems for digital libraries
Journal and digital library portals are the information systems that researchers turn to most frequently for undertaking and disseminating their academic work. However, their interfaces have not been improved. We propose an articulation of the navigation and search systems in a single visual solution that would allow the simultaneous exploration and interrogation of the information system. Area is a low-cost visualization tool that is easy to implement, and which can be used with large collections of documents. Moreover, it has a short learning curve that enhances both user-experience and user-satisfaction with journal and digital library websites
From Keyword Search to Exploration: How Result Visualization Aids Discovery on the Web
A key to the Web's success is the power of search. The elegant way in which search results are returned is usually remarkably effective. However, for exploratory search in which users need to learn, discover, and understand novel or complex topics, there is substantial room for improvement. Human computer interaction researchers and web browser designers have developed novel strategies to improve Web search by enabling users to conveniently visualize, manipulate, and organize their Web search results. This monograph offers fresh ways to think about search-related cognitive processes and describes innovative design approaches to browsers and related tools. For instance, while key word search presents users with results for specific information (e.g., what is the capitol of Peru), other methods may let users see and explore the contexts of their requests for information (related or previous work, conflicting information), or the properties that associate groups of information assets (group legal decisions by lead attorney). We also consider the both traditional and novel ways in which these strategies have been evaluated. From our review of cognitive processes, browser design, and evaluations, we reflect on the future opportunities and new paradigms for exploring and interacting with Web search results
09101 Abstracts Collection -- Interactive Information Retrieval
From 01.03. to 06.03.2009, the Dagstuhl Seminar 09101 ``Interactive Information Retrieval \u27\u27 was held in Schloss Dagstuhl~--~Leibniz Center for Informatics.
During the seminar, several participants presented their current
research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of
the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of
seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section
describes the seminar topics and goals in general.

The SSDC contribution to the improvement of knowledge by means of 3D data projections of minor bodies
The latest developments of planetary exploration missions devoted to minor
bodies required new solutions to correctly visualize and analyse data acquired
over irregularly shaped bodies. ASI Space Science Data Center (SSDC-ASI,
formerly ASDC-ASI Science Data Center) worked on this task since early 2013,
when started developing the web tool MATISSE (Multi-purpose Advanced Tool for
the Instruments of the Solar System Exploration) mainly focused on the
Rosetta/ESA space mission data. In order to visualize very high-resolution
shape models, MATISSE uses a Python module (vtpMaker), which can also be
launched as a stand-alone command-line software. MATISSE and vtpMaker are part
of the SSDC contribution to the new challenges imposed by the "orbital
exploration" of minor bodies: 1) MATISSE allows to search for specific
observations inside datasets and then analyse them in parallel, providing
high-level outputs; 2) the 3D capabilities of both tools are critical in
inferring information otherwise difficult to retrieve for non-spherical targets
and, as in the case for the GIADA instrument onboard Rosetta, to visualize data
related to the coma. New tasks and features adding valuable capabilities to the
minor bodies SSDC tools are planned for the near future thanks to new
collaborations

Teaching and learning in information retrieval
A literature review of pedagogical methods for teaching and learning information retrieval is presented. From the analysis of the literature a taxonomy was built and it is used to structure the paper. Information Retrieval (IR) is presented from different points of view: technical levels, educational goals, teaching and learning methods, assessment and curricula. The review is organized around two levels of abstraction which form a taxonomy that deals with the different aspects of pedagogy as applied to information retrieval. The first level looks at the technical level of delivering information retrieval concepts, and at the educational goals as articulated by the two main subject domains where IR is delivered: computer science (CS) and library and information science (LIS). The second level focuses on pedagogical issues, such as teaching and learning methods, delivery modes (classroom, online or e-learning), use of IR systems for teaching, assessment and feedback, and curricula design. The survey, and its bibliography, provides an overview of the pedagogical research carried out in the field of IR. It also provides a guide for educators on approaches that can be applied to improving the student learning experiences
