    Integrating Third-party Applications and Information Systems Into the World Wide Web

    In this paper we propose a conceptual architecture that integrates with both third-party applications and information systems. We believe that integrating information systems with the Web will go a long way toward making information systems more understandable. We also believe that integrating third-party applications with the Web will lessen the problem that users have to discard applications they use everyday to navigate and publish in the cyberspace

    SNAP, Crackle, WebWindows!

    We elaborate the SNAP---Scalable (ATM) Network and (PC) Platforms---view of computing in the year 2000. The World Wide Web will continue its rapid evolution, and in the future, applications will not be written for Windows NT/95 or UNIX, but rather for WebWindows with interfaces defined by the standards of Web servers and clients. This universal environment will support WebTop productivity tools, such as WebWord, WebLotus123, and WebNotes built in modular dynamic fashion, and undermining the business model for large software companies. We define a layered WebWindows software architecture in which applications are built on top of multi-use services. We discuss examples including business enterprise systems (IntraNets), health care, financial services and education. HPCC is implicit throughout this discussion for there is no larger parallel system than the World Wide metacomputer. We suggest building the MPP programming environment in terms of pervasive sustainable WebWindows technologies. In particular, WebFlow will support naturally dataflow integrating data and compute intensive applications on distributed heterogeneous systems

    Expending the content of curriculum : implementation of the World Wide Web into foreign language teaching

    This study investigated the factors that impact the decisions to integrate the World Wide Web into foreign language curriculum. This inquiry involved a combined approach -- including a survey and a case study. The current status of the technology application in foreign language instruction at a state university in the United States was assessed through the survey. It revealed that integrating the Web was the least immediate concern of most foreign language professors due to their limited knowledge, their inadequate training, and their ambiguous attitudes. A case study of an innovator\u27s practice of integrating the Web in foreign language instruction was conducted in the laboratory school affiliated with the university. The case study indicated that positive attitudes and adequate background knowledge about the technology applications were necessary for the web integration

    Distributed human computation framework for linked data co-reference resolution

    Distributed Human Computation (DHC) is a technique used to solve computational problems by incorporating the collaborative effort of a large number of humans. It is also a solution to AI-complete problems such as natural language processing. The Semantic Web with its root in AI is envisioned to be a decentralised world-wide information space for sharing machine-readable data with minimal integration costs. There are many research problems in the Semantic Web that are considered as AI-complete problems. An example is co-reference resolution, which involves determining whether different URIs refer to the same entity. This is considered to be a significant hurdle to overcome in the realisation of large-scale Semantic Web applications. In this paper, we propose a framework for building a DHC system on top of the Linked Data Cloud to solve various computational problems. To demonstrate the concept, we are focusing on handling the co-reference resolution in the Semantic Web when integrating distributed datasets. The traditional way to solve this problem is to design machine-learning algorithms. However, they are often computationally expensive, error-prone and do not scale. We designed a DHC system named iamResearcher, which solves the scientific publication author identity co-reference problem when integrating distributed bibliographic datasets. In our system, we aggregated 6 million bibliographic data from various publication repositories. Users can sign up to the system to audit and align their own publications, thus solving the co-reference problem in a distributed manner. The aggregated results are published to the Linked Data Cloud

    The World Wide Web contains huge amounts of documents in several languages. Also, internet offers numerous resources which may help in finding and understanding web documents. This article firstly aims at passing on facts and considerations from the author’s teaching experience within a thematic process framework of Information Management. Here, information searching, evaluation, registration and presentation are guide-lines. In information searching, the points touched upon include search engine strate-gies, such as qualified URL guessing and language checking. Information evaluation mentions a few basic techniques while information registration and presentation point to the utility of co-integrating multimedia links in the software applications. Secondly, the article in a smaller section suggests a typology for internet language resources and comments on a number of useful language web sites.     VisualNet: Commonsense knowledgebase for video and image indexing and retrieval application

    The rapidly increasing amount of video collections, available on the web or via broadcasting, motivated research towards building intelligent tools for searching, rating, indexing and retrieval purposes. Establishing a semantic representation of visual data, mainly in textual form, is one of the important tasks. The time needed for building and maintaining Ontologies and knowledge, especially for wide domain, and the efforts for integrating several approaches emphasize the need for unified generic commonsense knowledgebase for visual applications. In this paper, we propose a novel commonsense knowledgebase that forms the link between the visual world and its semantic textual representation. We refer to it as "VisualNet". VisualNet is obtained by our fully automated engine that constructs a new unified structure concluding the knowledge from two commonsense knowledgebases, namely WordNet and ConceptNet. This knowledge is extracted by performing analysis operations on WordNet and ConceptNet contents, and then only useful knowledge in visual domain applications is considered. Moreover, this automatic engine enables this knowledgebase to be developed, updated and maintained automatically, synchronized with any future enhancement on WordNet or ConceptNet. Statistical properties of the proposed knowledgebase, in addition to an evaluation of a sample application results, show coherency and effectiveness of the proposed knowledgebase and its automatic engine

To encourage the use of SAP R/3 to enhance education, SAP AG has initiated a University Alliance Program (UAP) in North America. Being an early participant in the UAP presented the challenge of integrating R/3 into the business and MIS curricula. A course development activity for this integration was the creation of an introductory course on SAP R/3. A World Wide Web format of online lessons for the course was selected in order to make the course available to students in an asynchronous format.     QoS adaptation in multimedia multicast conference applications for e-learning services

    The evolution of the World Wide Web (WWW) service has incorporated new distributed multimedia conference applications, powering a new generation of e-learning development, and allowing improved interactivity and pro- human relations. Groupware applications are increasingly representative in the Internet home applications market, however, the Quality of Service (QoS) provided by the network is still a limitation impairing their performance. Such applications have found in multicast technology an ally contributing for their efficient implementation and scalability. Additionally, consider QoS as design goal at application level becomes crucial for groupware development, enabling QoS proactivity to applications. The applications’ ability to adapt themselves dynamically according to the resources availability can be considered a quality factor. Tolerant real-time applications, such as videoconferences, are in the frontline to benefit from QoS adaptation. However, not all include adaptive technology able to provide both end-system and network quality awareness. Adaptation, in these cases, can be achieved by introducing a multiplatform middleware layer responsible for tutoring the applications' resources (enabling adjudication or limitation) based on the available processing and networking capabilities. Congregating these technological contributions, an adaptive platform has been developed integrating public domain multicast tools, applied to a web-based distance learning system. The system is user-centered (e-student), aiming at good pedagogical practices and proactive usability for multimedia and network resources. The services provided, including QoS adapted interactive multimedia multicast conferences (MMC), are fully integrated and transparent to end-users. QoS adaptation, when treated systematically in tolerant real-time applications, denotes advantages in group scalability and QoS sustainability in heterogeneous and unpredictable environments such as the Internet
