    Using Satellite Images and Deep Learning to Measure Health and Living Standards in India

    Using deep learning with satellite images enhances our understanding of human development at a granular spatial and temporal level. Most studies have focused on Africa and on a narrow set of asset-based indicators. This article leverages georeferenced village-level census data from across 40% of the population of India to train deep models that predicts 16 indicators of human well-being from Landsat 7 imagery. Based on the principles of transfer learning, the census-based model is used as a feature extractor to train another model that predicts an even larger set of developmental variables—over 90 variables—included in two rounds of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS). The census-based-feature-extractor model outperforms the current standard in the literature for most of these NFHS variables. Overall, the results show that combining satellite data with Indian Census data unlocks rich information for training deep models that track human development at an unprecedented geographical and temporal resolution

    A Review of Codebook Models in Patch-Based Visual Object Recognition

    The codebook model-based approach, while ignoring any structural aspect in vision, nonetheless provides state-of-the-art performances on current datasets. The key role of a visual codebook is to provide a way to map the low-level features into a fixed-length vector in histogram space to which standard classifiers can be directly applied. The discriminative power of such a visual codebook determines the quality of the codebook model, whereas the size of the codebook controls the complexity of the model. Thus, the construction of a codebook is an important step which is usually done by cluster analysis. However, clustering is a process that retains regions of high density in a distribution and it follows that the resulting codebook need not have discriminant properties. This is also recognised as a computational bottleneck of such systems. In our recent work, we proposed a resource-allocating codebook, to constructing a discriminant codebook in a one-pass design procedure that slightly outperforms more traditional approaches at drastically reduced computing times. In this review we survey several approaches that have been proposed over the last decade with their use of feature detectors, descriptors, codebook construction schemes, choice of classifiers in recognising objects, and datasets that were used in evaluating the proposed methods

    3D Flow Field Estimation and Assessment for Live Cell Fluorescence Microscopy

    International audienceMotivation: The revolution in light sheet microscopy enables the concurrent observation of thousands of dynamic processes, from single molecules to cellular organelles, with high spatiotemporal resolution. However, challenges in the interpretation of multidimensional data requires the fully automaticmeasurement of those motions to link local processes to cellular functions. This includes the design and the implementation of image processing pipelines able to deal with diverse motion types, and 3D visualization tools adapted to the human visual system.Results: Here, we describe a new method for 3D motion estimation that addresses the aforementioned issues. We integrate 3D matching and variational approach to handle a diverse range of motion without any prior on the shape of moving objects. We compare dierent similarity measures to cope with intensity ambiguities and demonstrate the eectiveness of the Census signature for both stages. Additionally, wepresent two intuitive visualization approaches to adapt complex 3D measures into an interpretable 2D view, and a novel way to assess the quality of flow estimates in absence of ground truth

    Discriminative Appearance Models for Face Alignment

    The proposed face alignment algorithm uses local gradient features as the appearance representation. These features are obtained by pixel value comparison, which provide robustness against changes in illumination, as well as partial occlusion and local deformation due to the locality. The adopted features are modeled in three discriminative methods, which correspond to different alignment cost functions. The discriminative appearance modeling alleviate the generalization problem to some extent
