A Study on the Influencing Factors of Social Media in the Communication of Cultural Heritage Education: A Systematic Literature Review

This study examined the impact of social media on disseminating cultural heritage education. After reviewing two databases, 29 articles met our inclusion criteria. This study found that social media can expand the educational scope of cultural heritage and increase public awareness and interest in cultural heritage tourism sites and museums. However, social media is only a publicity channel. It is necessary to consider five influencing factors in social media: the subject of information distribution, the motivation of distribution, the purpose of distribution, the content of distribution, and the method of distribution, and to analyze the specific practices of social media in disseminating cultural heritage education. Therefore, more research is needed to explore the influence of social media on cultural heritage education dissemination, to explore the educational nature of social media in cultural heritage education communication, and to provide a theoretical basis for social media to promote cultural heritage education dissemination

A value based approach to modern architectural heritage in Cyprus: Schools in Larnaka, 1945-1963

Cyprus, the easternmost island of the Mediterranean, is faced with the challenge of addressing the heritage assets of its modern architectural heritage. Emerging scholarship has indicated the wealth and the complexity of modern architecture in Cyprus as heritage. Nevertheless, modern architecture in Cyprus, developed during the most turbulent periods of the twentieth century in the island, has been linked with processes of colonialism and post-colonialism, independence, nation-building and conflict. Hence, by being explicitly involved in identity politics and conflict modern architecture in Cyprus constitutes contested heritage. In this context the mobilisation of modern architecture in Cyprus as heritage in favour of the construction of a peaceful and democratic society presents many challenges. Over the last twenty years, the concept of heritage has gradually expanded to encompass a wide typological range of objects, as well as a wide range of time periods. At the same time, more and more disciplines have been involved in the study, safeguarding, promotion and management of heritage. Furthermore, as the participation and access to heritage is now recognised as a human right, the heritage processes involve more stakeholders, including groups which value the heritage object in different ways. These are some of the fundamental changes that characterise a ‘new paradigm’ in the heritage field. In light of this ‘new paradigm’ the consideration of heritage values has gradually shifted from the periphery to the epicentre of conservation theory and practice. As heritage has been increasingly accepted as the source of important benefits to society the need to protect more complex layers of our heritage and to mobilise them in favour of sustainable development is today more urgent than ever. This thesis argues that value-based approaches present opportunities for addressing complex heritage questions and mobilising heritage towards sustainable development in conflict-affected contexts. The heritage values of the modern architectural heritage of Cyprus, as well as the opportunities in the value-based approaches are addressed through the examination of the case study of post-WWII schools built in the city of Larnaka, Cyprus between 1945-1963

How to design hotel gamified applications effectively: understanding the motives of users as hotel visitors

The service sector including tourism and hospitality have recognized the need for a turn to a customer-centric approach that primarily values tourists’ needs, wants, preferences and requirements as major determinants in travel decisions. Considering that mobile devices are becoming travel buddies and that their use is profoundly influencing traveller’s journey highlights the need of Gamification. As a relatively new phenomenon in the industry, motives encouraging usage behaviour have yet to be researched. Identifying these motives could offer several advantages to hotels by providing relationship marketing, engagement and strengthening customer loyalty. This research tries to fill this gap and enlighten existing gamification research by understanding the motives of users’ continuance intention in adopting technology with gamification characteristics. Visual material based on the current definitions of gamification was prepared to create a hotel gamified application to help participants discuss their preferences

Cybersecurity Challenges in the Maritime Sector

Cyberattacks have been rapidly increasing over the years, resulting to big financial losses to businesses for recovery, regulatory sanctions, as well as collateral damages, such as reputation and trust. In this respect, the maritime sector, which until now was considered safe due to the lack of Internet connectivity and the isolated nature of ships in the sea, is showing a 900% increase in cybersecurity breaches on operational technology as it enters the digital era. Although some research is being conducted in this area, maritime cybersecurity has not been deeply investigated. Hence, this paper provides a close investigation of the landscape of cybersecurity in the maritime sector with the aim of highlighting security problems and challenges. First, it explores the systems available on ships that could be targeted by attackers, their possible vulnerabilities that an attacker could exploit, the consequences if the system is accessed, and actual incidents. Then, it describes and analyses possible mitigation actions that can be utilised in advance to prevent such attacks. Finally, several challenges and open problems are discussed for future research.</jats:p

Privacy Protection in Tourism: Where We Are and Where We Should Be Heading For

The link between information privacy concerns and privacy behaviours has been a focus of extensive investigation in various disciplines. However, little attention has been devoted to this issue in the tourism literature. Spurred by technological development and shaped by tourism-related environments, emerging privacy issues call for comprehensive yet context-specific studies to ensure tourists are making beneficial privacy choices. This paper first presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art research on privacy concerns and behaviours. Then, it suggests a list of overarching research priorities, merging social and technical aspects of privacy protection approaches as they apply to tourism. The priorities include research to measure tourists’ privacy concerns, explore specific biases in tourists’ privacy decisions, experiment with privacy nudges, and explore how to integrate privacy nudges in system design. Thus, this paper contributes to guiding the direction of future research on privacy protection in tourism

A blessing or a curse? An anatomy of the Republic of Cyprus energy program

After the Republic of Cyprus announced its intention to proceed to oil and gas exploration and exploitation research activities back in 2011, it entered a transition period during which it has been transformed from an almost exclusively energy consumer to both an energy producer and an energy hub. This transition has already brought (geo)political and economic benefits, but it has also caused the development of a new field of confrontation between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkey/Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) axis. This latest confrontation has raised the question if the exploitation of hydrocarbons can be considered a blessing or a curse for the Republic of Cyprus, at least before the final settlement of the Cyprus issue. This thesis aims to contribute to the discussion related to the energy security of the Republic of Cyprus in the aftermath of the decision to proceed to exploration and exploitation researches and, more precisely, during the period between 2013 and 2018 and also, how it has impacted the state’s foreign policy crisis management mechanism. To do so, the researcher has based the theoretical context of the thesis on Neoclassical Realism and has used two methods of analysis. With reference to the two methods of analysis, this study has based the collection and analysis of the data required to analyze the thesis research question on Political Discourse Analysis (PDA) and Semi-Structured Elite Interviewing

Unlocking Sacred Landscapes

This Special Issue is the third and final volume in a trilogy of collective peer-reviewed works of the Unlocking Sacred Landscapes research network. It encompasses various approaches both to ritual space and to artefacts relating to ritual practice and cults involving islandscapes (including landscapes and seascapes). The terms ritual and cult are used broadly to include sanctuaries, temples, and churches, as well as the domestic and funerary spheres of life. Although the main focus of the Special Issue is the Mediterranean region, studies related to other regions are included to stimulate wider methodological dialogues and comparative approaches. The time span ranges from prehistory to the recent past, and research includes ethnography and cultural heritage studies. The contributions of the issue deal with historical and culturally driven perspectives that recognise the complexities of island religious systems as well as the active role of the islanders in constructing their own religious identities, irrespective of emulation and acculturation. The authors consider inter-island and island/mainland relations, maritime connectivity of things and people, and ideological values in relation to religious change, as well as the relation between island space and environment in the performance and maintenance of spiritual lives
