    Towards a continuous biometric system based on ECG signals acquired on the steering wheel

    Electrocardiogram signals acquired through a steering wheel could be the key to seamless, highly comfortable, and continuous human recognition in driving settings. This paper focuses on the enhancement of the unprecedented lesser quality of such signals, through the combination of Savitzky-Golay and moving average filters, followed by outlier detection and removal based on normalised cross-correlation and clustering, which was able to render ensemble heartbeats of significantly higher quality. Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Haar transform features were extracted and fed to decision methods based on Support Vector Machines (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbours (kNN), Multilayer Perceptrons (MLP), and Gaussian Mixture Models – Universal Background Models (GMM-UBM) classifiers, for both identification and authentication tasks. Additional techniques of user-tuned authentication and past score weighting were also studied. The method’s performance was comparable to some of the best recent state-of-the-art methods (94.9% identification rate (IDR) and 2.66% authentication equal error rate (EER)), despite lesser results with scarce train data (70.9% IDR and 11.8% EER). It was concluded that the method was suitable for biometric recognition with driving electrocardiogram signals, and could, with future developments, be used on a continuous system in seamless and highly noisy settings.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Systèmes cognitifs artificiels : du concept au développement de comportements intelligents en robotique autonome

    Les travaux présentés dans le cadre de cette habilitation à diriger des recherches s’appuient sur le principe de la robotique développementale et plus particulièrement sur le paradigme de l’énaction. L’idée n’est donc pas de développer un robot intelligent, mais plutôt de concevoir un robot qui soit capable de le devenir. L’originalité du travail présenté dans ce mémoire repose sur le fait que le système cognitif artificiel est décomposé en deux parties distinctes : la première regroupe des processus cognitifs « inconscients » et la deuxième concerne les processus cognitifs « conscients ». Les processus cognitifs inconscients correspondent aux aptitudes (pré-programmées ou apprises) fonctionnant de manière quasi-automatique, alors que les processus cognitifs conscients contribuent au développement et à l’apprentissage de nouvelles aptitudes. La cognition associée au robot est donc le résultat d’un processus de développement par lequel le robot devient progressivement plus habile et acquiert les connaissances lui permettant d’interpréter le monde qui l’entoure.Ce mémoire se décompose en trois grandes parties. La première partie correspond à un curriculum vitae détaillé présentant l’ensemble de mon parcours professionnel. La deuxième partie est consacrée à la présentation plus approfondie de mes activités de recherches qui se sont focalisées sur le développement de systèmes cognitifs artificiels appliqués à la robotique avec des applications dans les domaines de la locomotion bipède, la perception et l’acquisition autonome de connaissances ainsi que les systèmes multi-robots et l’intelligence distribuée. Enfin, la troisième partie est une compilation de quatre articles de revue représentatives de l’ensemble de mes travaux de recherches

    Políticas de Copyright de Publicações Científicas em Repositórios Institucionais: O Caso do INESC TEC

    A progressiva transformação das práticas científicas, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento das novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), têm possibilitado aumentar o acesso à informação, caminhando gradualmente para uma abertura do ciclo de pesquisa. Isto permitirá resolver a longo prazo uma adversidade que se tem colocado aos investigadores, que passa pela existência de barreiras que limitam as condições de acesso, sejam estas geográficas ou financeiras. Apesar da produção científica ser dominada, maioritariamente, por grandes editoras comerciais, estando sujeita às regras por estas impostas, o Movimento do Acesso Aberto cuja primeira declaração pública, a Declaração de Budapeste (BOAI), é de 2002, vem propor alterações significativas que beneficiam os autores e os leitores. Este Movimento vem a ganhar importância em Portugal desde 2003, com a constituição do primeiro repositório institucional a nível nacional. Os repositórios institucionais surgiram como uma ferramenta de divulgação da produção científica de uma instituição, com o intuito de permitir abrir aos resultados da investigação, quer antes da publicação e do próprio processo de arbitragem (preprint), quer depois (postprint), e, consequentemente, aumentar a visibilidade do trabalho desenvolvido por um investigador e a respetiva instituição. O estudo apresentado, que passou por uma análise das políticas de copyright das publicações científicas mais relevantes do INESC TEC, permitiu não só perceber que as editoras adotam cada vez mais políticas que possibilitam o auto-arquivo das publicações em repositórios institucionais, como também que existe todo um trabalho de sensibilização a percorrer, não só para os investigadores, como para a instituição e toda a sociedade. A produção de um conjunto de recomendações, que passam pela implementação de uma política institucional que incentive o auto-arquivo das publicações desenvolvidas no âmbito institucional no repositório, serve como mote para uma maior valorização da produção científica do INESC TEC.The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC

KaRD series is an open environment where researchers can present their works and discuss all the topics focused on the many aspects that involve kinematics in the design of robotic/automatic systems. Kinematics is so intimately related to the design of robotic/automatic systems that the admitted topics of the KaRD series practically cover all the subjects normally present in well-established international conferences on “mechanisms and robotics”.     Joint Dynamics and Adaptive Feedforward Control of Lightweight Industrial Robots

    The use of lightweight strain-wave transmissions in collaborative industrial robots leads to structural compliance and a complex nonlinear behavior of the robot joints. Furthermore, wear and temperature changes lead to variations in the joint dynamics behavior over time. The immediate negative consequences are related to the performance of motion and force control, safety, and lead-through programming.This thesis introduces and investigates new methods to further increase the performance of collaborative industrial robots subject to complex nonlinear and time-varying joint dynamics behavior. Within this context, the techniques of mathematical modeling, system identification, and adaptive estimation and control are applied. The methods are experimentally validated using the collaborative industrial robots by Universal Robots.Mathematically, the robot and joint dynamics are considered as two coupled subsystems. The robot dynamics are derived and linearly parametrized to facilitate identification of the inertial parameters. Calibrating these parameters leads to improvements in torque prediction accuracy of 16.5 %-28.5 % depending on the motion.The joint dynamics are thoroughly analyzed and characterized. Based on a series of experiments, a comprehensive model of the robot joint is established taking into account the complex nonlinear dynamics of the strain-wave transmission, that is the nonlinear compliance, hysteresis, kinematic error, and friction. The steady-state friction is considered to depend on angular velocity, load torque, and temperature. The dynamic friction characteristics are described by an Extended Generalized Maxwell-Slip (E-GMS) model which describes in a combined framework; hysteresis characteristics that depend on angular position and Coulomb friction that depend on load torque. E-GMS model-based feedforward control improves the torque prediction accuracy by a factor 2.1 and improve the tracking error by a factor 1.5.An E-GMS model-based adaptive feedforward controller is developed to address the issue of friction changing with wear and temperature. The adaptive control strategy leads to improvements in torque prediction of 84 % and tracking error of 20 %

    Multi-Agent Pursuit of a Faster Evader with Application to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    Robotic applications like search and rescue missions, surveillance, police missions, patrolling, and warfare can all be modeled as a Pursuit-Evasion Game (PEG). Most of these tasks are multi-agent problems, often including a cooperation between team members and a conflict between adversarial teams. In order to realize such a situation with robots, two major problems have to be solved. Initially, a decomposition of the PEG has to be performed for getting results in reasonable time. Present embedded computers lack the computational power enabling them to process the highly complex solution algorithm of the non-decomposed game fast enough. Secondly, a framework has to be defined, enabling the computation of optimal actions for both the pursuers and the evaders when a cooperation within the teams is possible. It is intended to develop strategies, that allow the team of pursuers to capture a faster evader in a visibility-based PEG setup due to cooperation. For tackling the first problem a game structure is sought, aiming to considerably reduce the time complexity of the solution process. The first step is the decomposition of the action space, and the second is the change of the game structure itself. The latter is reached by defining a two-pursuer one-evader PEG with three different game structures, which are the Non-Decomposed Game, the Multiple Two-Player Game Decomposition (MTPGD) game, and the Team-Subsumption Two-Player Game (TSTPG). Several simulation results demonstrate, that both methods yield close results in respect to the full game. With increasing cardinality of each player’s strategy space, the MTPGD yields a relevant decrease of the run-time. Otherwise, the TSTPG does not minimize the time complexity, but enables the use of more sophisticated algorithms for two-player games, resulting in a decreased runtime. The cooperation within a team is enabled by introducing a hierarchical decomposition of the game. On a superordinate collaboration level, the pursuers choose their optimal behavioral strategy (e.g. pursuit and battue) resulting in the case of a two-pursuer one-evader PEG in a three-player noncooperative dynamic game, which is solved in a subordinate level of the overall game. This structure enables an intelligent behavior change for the pursuers based on game-theoretical solution methods. Depending on the state of the game, which behavioral strategy yields the best results for the pursuers within a predefined time horizon has to be evaluated. It is shown that the pursuer’s outcome can be improved by using a superordinate cooperation. Moreover, conditions are presented under which a capture of a faster evader by a group of two pursuers is possible in a visibility-based PEG with imperfect information. Since Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly a common platform used in the aforementioned applications, this work focuses only on PEGs with multi-rotor UAVs. Furthermore, the realization of the concepts in this thesis are applied on a real hex rotor. The feasibility of the approach is proven in experiments, while all implementations on the UAV are running in real-time. This framework provides a solution concept for all types of dynamic games with an 1-M or N-1 setup, that have a non-cooperative and cooperative nature. At this stage a N-M dynamic game is not applicable. Nevertheless, an approach to extend this framework to the N-M case is proposed in the last chapter of this work
