    Smart Sustainable Mobility: Analytics and Algorithms for Next-Generation Mobility Systems

    To this date, mobility ecosystems around the world operate on an uncoordinated, inefficient and unsustainable basis. Yet, many technology-enabled solutions that have the potential to remedy these societal negatives are already at our disposal or just around the corner. Innovations in vehicle technology, IoT devices, mobile connectivity and AI-powered information systems are expected to bring about a mobility system that is connected, autonomous, shared and electric (CASE). In order to fully leverage the sustainability opportunities afforded by CASE, system-level coordination and management approaches are needed. This Thesis sets out an agenda for Information Systems research to shape the future of CASE mobility through data, analytics and algorithms (Chapter 1). Drawing on causal inference, (spatial) machine learning, mathematical programming and reinforcement learning, three concrete contributions toward this agenda are developed. Chapter 2 demonstrates the potential of pervasive and inexpensive sensor technology for policy analysis. Connected sensing devices have significantly reduced the cost and complexity of acquiring high-resolution, high-frequency data in the physical world. This affords researchers the opportunity to track temporal and spatial patterns of offline phenomena. Drawing on a case from the bikesharing sector, we demonstrate how geo-tagged IoT data streams can be used for tracing out highly localized causal effects of large-scale mobility policy interventions while offering actionable insights for policy makers and practitioners. Chapter 3 sets out a solution approach to a novel decision problem faced by operators of shared mobility fleets: allocating vehicle inventory optimally across a network when competition is present. The proposed three-stage model combines real-time data analytics, machine learning and mixed integer non-linear programming into an integrated framework. It provides operational decision support for fleet managers in contested shared mobility markets by generating optimal vehicle re-positioning schedules in real time. Chapter 4 proposes a method for leveraging data-driven digital twin (DT) frameworks for large multi-stage stochastic design problems. Such problem classes are notoriously difficult to solve with traditional stochastic optimization. Drawing on the case of Electric Vehicle Charging Hubs (EVCHs), we show how high-fidelity, data-driven DT simulation environments fused with reinforcement learning (DT-RL) can achieve (close-to) arbitrary scalability and high modeling flexibility. In benchmark experiments we demonstrate that DT-RL-derived designs result in superior cost and service-level performance under real-world operating conditions

    Digital twin and its implementations in the civil engineering sector

    Digital Twin (DT) concept has recently emerged in civil engineering; however, some problems still need to be addressed. First, DT can be easily confused with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Second, the constituents of DT applications in this sector are not well-defined. Also, what the DT can bring to the civil engineering industry is still ambiguous. To address these problems, we reviewed 468 articles related to DT, BIM and CPS, proposed a DT definition and its constituents in civil engineering and compared DT with BIM and CPS. Then we reviewed 134 papers related to DT in the civil engineering sector out of 468 papers in detail. We extracted DT research clusters based on the co-occurrence analysis of paper keywords' and the relevant DT constituents. This research helps establish the state-of-the-art of DT in the civil engineering sector and suggests future DT development

    Toward a Bio-Inspired System Architecting Framework: Simulation of the Integration of Autonomous Bus Fleets & Alternative Fuel Infrastructures in Closed Sociotechnical Environments

    Cities are set to become highly interconnected and coordinated environments composed of emerging technologies meant to alleviate or resolve some of the daunting issues of the 21st century such as rapid urbanization, resource scarcity, and excessive population demand in urban centers. These cybernetically-enabled built environments are expected to solve these complex problems through the use of technologies that incorporate sensors and other data collection means to fuse and understand large sums of data/information generated from other technologies and its human population. Many of these technologies will be pivotal assets in supporting and managing capabilities in various city sectors ranging from energy to healthcare. However, among these sectors, a significant amount of attention within the recent decade has been in the transportation sector due to the flood of new technological growth and cultivation, which is currently seeing extensive research, development, and even implementation of emerging technologies such as autonomous vehicles (AVs), the Internet of Things (IoT), alternative xxxvi fueling sources, clean propulsion technologies, cloud/edge computing, and many other technologies. Within the current body of knowledge, it is fairly well known how many of these emerging technologies will perform in isolation as stand-alone entities, but little is known about their performance when integrated into a transportation system with other emerging technologies and humans within the system organization. This merging of new age technologies and humans can make analyzing next generation transportation systems extremely complex to understand. Additionally, with new and alternative forms of technologies expected to come in the near-future, one can say that the quantity of technologies, especially in the smart city context, will consist of a continuously expanding array of technologies whose capabilities will increase with technological advancements, which can change the performance of a given system architecture. Therefore, the objective of this research is to understand the system architecture implications of integrating different alternative fueling infrastructures with autonomous bus (AB) fleets in the transportation system within a closed sociotechnical environment. By being able to understand the system architecture implications of alternative fueling infrastructures and AB fleets, this could provide performance-based input into a more sophisticated approach or framework which is proposed as a future work of this research

    INRISCO: INcident monitoRing in Smart COmmunities

    Major advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs) make citizens to be considered as sensors in motion. Carrying their mobile devices, moving in their connected vehicles or actively participating in social networks, citizens provide a wealth of information that, after properly processing, can support numerous applications for the benefit of the community. In the context of smart communities, the INRISCO [1] proposal intends for (i) the early detection of abnormal situations in cities (i.e., incidents), (ii) the analysis of whether, according to their impact, those incidents are really adverse for the community; and (iii) the automatic actuation by dissemination of appropriate information to citizens and authorities. Thus, INRISCO will identify and report on incidents in traffic (jam, accident) or public infrastructure (e.g., works, street cut), the occurrence of specific events that affect other citizens' life (e.g., demonstrations, concerts), or environmental problems (e.g., pollution, bad weather).     Industry 5.0 Enabled Smart Logistics: Optimization of Distribution Network in Food Industry

    The fourth industrial revolution, namely Industry 4.0, has substantially impacted the supply chain and logistics operations which led to the introduction of Logistics 4.0. The incorporation of novel technologies in this context developed smart logistics; however, scholars raised the concerns about socio-economic aspects of these improvements. Industry 5.0 as a value-driven paradigm, in this regard, initiated the trinary concept of sustainability, resilience, and human-centricity to put forward the technological and conceptual developments of industry according to this framework. Given the recency of this industrial revolution, not many research works have focused on the implication of Industry 5.0 for smart logistics. Therefore, this research aims at bridging this gap by investing effort into accomplishing a thorough systematic literature review to compare the topic of smart logistics in Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0. The results define integration and intelligence among the key features, and spot simulation and digital twin among the enabling technologies of this concept. To realize these findings, a digital model of a company’s distribution network is created, and it facilitates the possibility of performing network optimization and simulation through an integrated platform. The results show that such approach has a remarkable contribution in performing the supply chain network optimization and determining the logistics performances of the redesigned network, e.g., optimal inventory level and capacity at each facility, shipping policy in individual transportation routes, etc. This approach enables the possibility of incorporating socio-economic aspects into logistics studies, e.g., CO2 emission, which are discussed as further research directions

    Performance Analysis Of Data-Driven Algorithms In Detecting Intrusions On Smart Grid

    The traditional power grid is no longer a practical solution for power delivery due to several shortcomings, including chronic blackouts, energy storage issues, high cost of assets, and high carbon emissions. Therefore, there is a serious need for better, cheaper, and cleaner power grid technology that addresses the limitations of traditional power grids. A smart grid is a holistic solution to these issues that consists of a variety of operations and energy measures. This technology can deliver energy to end-users through a two-way flow of communication. It is expected to generate reliable, efficient, and clean power by integrating multiple technologies. It promises reliability, improved functionality, and economical means of power transmission and distribution. This technology also decreases greenhouse emissions by transferring clean, affordable, and efficient energy to users. Smart grid provides several benefits, such as increasing grid resilience, self-healing, and improving system performance. Despite these benefits, this network has been the target of a number of cyber-attacks that violate the availability, integrity, confidentiality, and accountability of the network. For instance, in 2021, a cyber-attack targeted a U.S. power system that shut down the power grid, leaving approximately 100,000 people without power. Another threat on U.S. Smart Grids happened in March 2018 which targeted multiple nuclear power plants and water equipment. These instances represent the obvious reasons why a high level of security approaches is needed in Smart Grids to detect and mitigate sophisticated cyber-attacks. For this purpose, the US National Electric Sector Cybersecurity Organization and the Department of Energy have joined their efforts with other federal agencies, including the Cybersecurity for Energy Delivery Systems and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, to investigate the security risks of smart grid networks. Their investigation shows that smart grid requires reliable solutions to defend and prevent cyber-attacks and vulnerability issues. This investigation also shows that with the emerging technologies, including 5G and 6G, smart grid may become more vulnerable to multistage cyber-attacks. A number of studies have been done to identify, detect, and investigate the vulnerabilities of smart grid networks. However, the existing techniques have fundamental limitations, such as low detection rates, high rates of false positives, high rates of misdetection, data poisoning, data quality and processing, lack of scalability, and issues regarding handling huge volumes of data. Therefore, these techniques cannot ensure safe, efficient, and dependable communication for smart grid networks. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation is to investigate the efficiency of machine learning in detecting cyber-attacks on smart grids. The proposed methods are based on supervised, unsupervised machine and deep learning, reinforcement learning, and online learning models. These models have to be trained, tested, and validated, using a reliable dataset. In this dissertation, CICDDoS 2019 was used to train, test, and validate the efficiency of the proposed models. The results show that, for supervised machine learning models, the ensemble models outperform other traditional models. Among the deep learning models, densely neural network family provides satisfactory results for detecting and classifying intrusions on smart grid. Among unsupervised models, variational auto-encoder, provides the highest performance compared to the other unsupervised models. In reinforcement learning, the proposed Capsule Q-learning provides higher detection and lower misdetection rates, compared to the other model in literature. In online learning, the Online Sequential Euclidean Distance Routing Capsule Network model provides significantly better results in detecting intrusion attacks on smart grid, compared to the other deep online models
