Complexity of Monadic inf-datalog. Application to temporal logic.
In [11] we defined Inf-Datalog and characterized the fragments of Monadic inf-Datalog that have the same expressive power as Modal Logic (resp. , alternation-free Modal -calculus and Modal -calculus). We study here the time and space complexity of evaluation of Monadic inf-Datalog programs on finite models. We deduce a new unified proof that model checking has 1. linear data and program complexities (both in time and space) for and alternation-free Modal -calculus, and 2. linear-space (data and program) complexities, linear-time program complexity and polynomial-time data complexity for (Modal -calculus with fixed alternation-depth at most ).
Type-elimination-based reasoning for the description logic SHIQbs using decision diagrams and disjunctive datalog
We propose a novel, type-elimination-based method for reasoning in the
description logic SHIQbs including DL-safe rules. To this end, we first
establish a knowledge compilation method converting the terminological part of
an ALCIb knowledge base into an ordered binary decision diagram (OBDD) which
represents a canonical model. This OBDD can in turn be transformed into
disjunctive Datalog and merged with the assertional part of the knowledge base
in order to perform combined reasoning. In order to leverage our technique for
full SHIQbs, we provide a stepwise reduction from SHIQbs to ALCIb that
preserves satisfiability and entailment of positive and negative ground facts.
The proposed technique is shown to be worst case optimal w.r.t. combined and
data complexity and easily admits extensions with ground conjunctive queries.Comment: 38 pages, 3 figures, camera ready version of paper accepted for

Decidability Results for the Boundedness Problem
We prove decidability of the boundedness problem for monadic least
fixed-point recursion based on positive monadic second-order (MSO) formulae
over trees. Given an MSO-formula phi(X,x) that is positive in X, it is
decidable whether the fixed-point recursion based on phi is spurious over the
class of all trees in the sense that there is some uniform finite bound for the
number of iterations phi takes to reach its least fixed point, uniformly across
all trees. We also identify the exact complexity of this problem. The proof
uses automata-theoretic techniques. This key result extends, by means of
model-theoretic interpretations, to show decidability of the boundedness
problem for MSO and guarded second-order logic (GSO) over the classes of
structures of fixed finite tree-width. Further model-theoretic transfer
arguments allow us to derive major known decidability results for boundedness
for fragments of first-order logic as well as new ones
Worst-case Optimal Query Answering for Greedy Sets of Existential Rules and Their Subclasses
The need for an ontological layer on top of data, associated with advanced
reasoning mechanisms able to exploit the semantics encoded in ontologies, has
been acknowledged both in the database and knowledge representation
communities. We focus in this paper on the ontological query answering problem,
which consists of querying data while taking ontological knowledge into
account. More specifically, we establish complexities of the conjunctive query
entailment problem for classes of existential rules (also called
tuple-generating dependencies, Datalog+/- rules, or forall-exists-rules. Our
contribution is twofold. First, we introduce the class of greedy
bounded-treewidth sets (gbts) of rules, which covers guarded rules, and their
most well-known generalizations. We provide a generic algorithm for query
entailment under gbts, which is worst-case optimal for combined complexity with
or without bounded predicate arity, as well as for data complexity and query
complexity. Secondly, we classify several gbts classes, whose complexity was
unknown, with respect to combined complexity (with both unbounded and bounded
predicate arity) and data complexity to obtain a comprehensive picture of the
complexity of existential rule fragments that are based on diverse guardedness
notions. Upper bounds are provided by showing that the proposed algorithm is
optimal for all of them
Ontology-mediated query answering over temporal data: a survey
We discuss the use of various temporal knowledge representation formalisms for ontology-mediated query answering over temporal data. In particular, we analyse ontology and query languages based on the linear temporal logic LTL, the multi-dimensional Halpern-Shoham interval temporal logic HSn, as well as the metric temporal logic MTL. Our main focus is on the data complexity of answering temporal ontology-mediated queries and their rewritability into standard first-order and datalog queries
