    Partial replication in distributed software transactional memory

    Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia InformáticaDistributed software transactional memory (DSTM) is emerging as an interesting alternative for distributed concurrency control. Usually, DSTM systems resort to data distribution and full replication techniques in order to provide scalability and fault tolerance. Nevertheless, distribution does not provide support for fault tolerance and full replication limits the system’s total storage capacity. In this context, partial data replication rises as an intermediate solution that combines the best of the previous two trying to mitigate their disadvantages. This strategy has been explored by the distributed databases research field, but has been little addressed in the context of transactional memory and, to the best of our knowledge, it has never before been incorporated into a DSTM system for a general-purpose programming language. Thus, we defend the claim that it is possible to combine both full and partial data replication in such systems. Accordingly, we developed a prototype of a DSTM system combining full and partial data replication for Java programs. We built from an existent DSTM framework and extended it with support for partial data replication. With the proposed framework, we implemented a partially replicated DSTM. We evaluated the proposed system using known benchmarks, and the evaluation showcases the existence of scenarios where partial data replication can be advantageous, e.g., in scenarios with small amounts of transactions modifying fully replicated data. The results of this thesis show that we were able to sustain our claim by implementing a prototype that effectively combines full and partial data replication in a DSTM system.     Transactional concurrency control for resource constrained applications

    PhD ThesisTransactions have long been used as a mechanism for ensuring the consistency of databases. Databases, and associated transactional approaches, have always been an active area of research as different application domains and computing architectures have placed ever more elaborate requirements on shared data access. As transactions typically provide consistency at the expense of timeliness (abort/retry) and resource (duplicate shared data and locking), there has been substantial efforts to limit these two aspects of transactions while still satisfying application requirements. In environments where clients are geographically distant from a database the consistency/performance trade-off becomes acute as any retrieval of data over a network is not only expensive, but relatively slow compared to co-located client/database systems. Furthermore, for battery powered clients the increased overhead of transactions can also be viewed as a significant power overhead. However, for all their drawbacks transactions do provide the data consistency that is a requirement for many application types. In this Thesis we explore the solution space related to timely transactional systems for remote clients and centralised databases with a focus on providing a solution, that, when compared to other's work in this domain: (a) maintains consistency; (b) lowers latency; (c) improves throughput. To achieve this we revisit a technique first developed to decrease disk access times via local caching of state (for aborted transactions) to tackle the problems prevalent in real-time databases. We demonstrate that such a technique (rerun) allows a significant change in the typical structure of a transaction (one never before considered, even in rerun systems). Such a change itself brings significant performance success not only in the traditional rerun local database solution space, but also in the distributed solution space. A byproduct of our improvements also, one can argue, brings about a "greener" solution as less time coupled with improved throughput affords improved battery life for mobile devices

The rate of high-profile breaches has illustrated that current techniques are inadequate for protecting sensitive information. Many of these breaches involve databases that handle information for a multitude of individuals, but databases don't provide practical tools to protect those individuals from each other, so that task is relegated to the application. This dissertation describes a system that improves security in a principled way by extending the database system and the application platform to support information flow control. Information flow control has been gaining traction as a practical way to protect information in the contexts of programming languages and operating systems. Recent research advocates the decentralized model for information flow control (DIFC), since it provides the necessary expressiveness to protect data for many individuals with varied security concerns.However, despite the fact that most applications implicated in breaches rely on relational databases, there have been no prior comprehensive attempts to extend DIFC to a database system. This dissertation introduces IFDB, which is a database management system that supports DIFC with minimal overhead. IFDB pioneers the Query by Label model, which provides applications with a simple way to delineate constraints on the confidentiality and integrity of the data they obtain from the database. This dissertation also defines new abstractions for managing information flows in a database and proposes new ways to address covert channels. Finally, the IFDB implementation and case studies with real applications demonstrate that database support for DIFC improves security, is easy for developers to use, and has good performance.by David Andrew Schultz.Ph.D
