    A COMPARISON BETWEEN MOTIVATIONS AND PERSONALITY TRAITS IN RELIGIOUS TOURISTS AND CRUISE SHIP TOURISTS

    The purpose of this paper is to analyze the motivations and the personality traits that characterize tourists who choose religious travels versus cruises. Participating in the research were 683 Italian tourists (345 males and 338 females, age range 18–63 years); 483 who went to a pilgrimage travel and 200 who chose a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea. Both groups of tourists completed the Travel Motivation Scale and the Big Five Questionnaire. Results show that different motivations and personality traits characterize the different types of tourists and, further, that motivations for traveling are predicted by specific —some similar, other divergent— personality trait

    Accommodating student's learning experience through personalized learning style adaptation in computer programming course at Centre for Foundation Studies, IIUM

    Teaching and learning computer programming can be difficult, especially for beginners. Since they are not exposed to any computer programming experience, they may face difficulties if the teaching approaches do not match with their learning styles. Computer programming requires the students to understand logical reasoning and syntax and be able to apply them practically for solving programming problems in nearly all disciplines. Mitra [1] claims that most students feel computer programming is a challenging intellectual exercise. At Centre for Foundation Studies, foundation students encounter difficulties in learning and applying computer programming concepts. Some of them perform better in other science subjects, but find difficulties in grasping the computer programming concepts. In this research, we have used Felder-Solomon Learning Style Inventory to identify C Programming’s students for their preferred learning styles. The result of the survey shows that the Engineering/Computer Science students came from mixed learning styles. Therefore, we have adapted Felder-Solomon’s learning style model, and come out with a model of three hybrid categories. This paper will provide detail suggestions for an online learning system based on a selected topic in C Programming. The system will accommodate the students’ learning style in accordance to the modified Felder-Solomon’s learning style model. As a significant contribution to programming educations, our suggestions may further be adopted for designing personalized learning for other disciplines

    Forms and Fragments: Enactment of Cultural Identification in an Online Community of Chinese Living Overseas

    This research is an interpretive study of the dynamics of cultural identification as enacted by Chinese individuals living overseas who participate in a virtual online community known as Wenxuecity.com. The study draws on intercultural communication theories of identity proposed by Carbaugh, Collier, and Hecht, as well as on my own integrative framework for the analysis of cultural identity, to explore the self-other interaction in identity enactment, the multidimensionality of identity, and the centrality of communication in processes of identification. Through the application of a qualitative analysis of online discourse, I found three primary forms of cultural identification-- perceptual, strategic, and positional cultural identification -- that reveal how online commentators make sense of their individual and group identities. Through online discussion of a variety of topics -- from China\u27s history, East-West tensions, to academic power structures and racial hierarchies in host cultures or media stereotyping and global hegemonic relations -- and using communicative strategies like self-other comparison, advice, and ideological debate, commentators enact both a sense of group cohesiveness as well as their internal, conflictive heterogeneity. Their discourse allows for the exploration of how multiple dimensions of identity -- individuality, sociality, materiality, and spirituality -- intersect to shape the fragmentary character of cultural identification. In the particular case of the group under study, the dominant trends observed reveal that cultural identification is a process characterized by the enactment of a sense of marginalization in host societies, heightened individuality, strategic attachment to or distancing from Chinese cultural membership, and ideological divisions

    Dynamic e-skills development for foreign languages education in the emergency digitization paradigm

    The COVID-19 pandemic induced amplified digitalization measures in the higher education sphere, informed by the need to take quick comprehensive action in order to achieve the overarching result to transform educational scenarios into interdisciplinary digital, blended, and hybrid frameworks. Taking into account the context of the erupted military intervention on Ukraine in February 2022, and the ensuing information warfare in various digital environments (social media, news coverage, digital communications), the specific value of the learning outcomes and outputs is allocated to the digitally enhanced foreign languages education as a tool of the internationally broadcast strife of Ukraine for freedom and sovereignty. The study results disclose the comprehensive review of dynamics of the digital skills development and application to construe interdisciplinary competencies of students of European (English, Spanish, French, Italian, German) and Asian (Mandarin Chinese, Japanese) Languages major programs in Ukraine through the span of educational activities in the time-frame of COVID-19 emergency digitization measures of 2021 and wartime emergency digitization measures of 2022 in Ukraine

    Developing a reading programme through an action research in a secondary school

    The purpose of this study is to identify factors that could promote interest and motivation in reading among the non readers as part of Ping Yi Secondary School Media Resource Library's activities. It is an attempt to improve the current practice of reading enrichment programme by conducting a school-based action research, using technology to promote screen and conventional print-based reading. There are three tasks involved in this study. The first task is to investigate the reasons as to why students are not keen to actively read during the library's enrichment reading programme. The second task is to explore the factors and the context that would motivate students to read. This is achieved through the review of literature and interview with students and teachers. Based on the findings of these two tasks, an alternative enrichment reading programme is developed and implemented. The final task is to evaluate and analyse the outcomes of the implementation of alternative reading programme called the Striving for Total Achievement and Responsibility (STAR) and to report the research project. A random sample of 65 students from Secondary two, three and four were selected to participate in the STAR project. The project became the platform for students to hone their reading interests, and acquire and develop multi-literacy skills. Based on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of data, it was found that while participating students began to read more, maintaining the momentum to read remained a real challenge to the teacher librarian. The data gathered showed that there was modest gain in the areas of cognitive, social and technical knowledge among the participants. The research highlights the fact that it is critical for a teacher designing a reading programme to share his or her goals with the participants at the onset; to provide participants with critical support to facilitate the construction of their own learning processes and to relate their learning journey to the demands of the workplace so that they could find relevance and meaning in what they learn and study in school. Although limited in scope and focus, the larger underlying concern of this study is to propel further research on the relationships between reading interests and academic performance among students of different levels, ethnic groups, gender and academic abilities
