A model driven approach to web-based traffic simulation.
As the world population increases the number of vehicles in the traffic increases as well, and so the traffic becomes more complex. Problems in the urban traffic such as traffic congestion, car accidents, parking difficulties, etc. have a large impact on people's lives as well as the environment. Therefore, researchers, policy makers, decision takers and planners use expert tools to find the best solutions for traffic and transportation problems.
Traffic modeling and simulation has been used for analyzing, designing, planning and managing urban traffic for many years. Various techniques have been proposed and many tools have been developed by researchers to assist the modeling and simulation activities in the traffic domain for more than half a century. However, improving the existing methods and developing new tools for traffic simulation are gaining importance due to the emerging technologies. Web-based modeling and simulation has been popular in the last decade, and has a great promise in terms of collaborative and distributed simulations. Model driven approaches are employed in the simulation field for a long time and have provided rapid development solutions. In this paper, a model driven Web-based traffic simulation framework is proposed and a prototype implementation is presented
Cloud-Based Collaborative 3D Modeling to Train Engineers for the Industry 4.0
In the present study, Autodesk Fusion 360 software (which includes the A360 environment) is used to train engineering students for the demands of the industry 4.0. Fusion 360 is a tool that unifies product lifecycle management (PLM) applications and 3D-modeling software (PDLM—product design and life management). The main objective of the research is to deepen the students’ perception of the use of a PDLM application and its dependence on three categorical variables: PLM previous knowledge, individual practices and collaborative engineering perception. Therefore, a collaborative graphic simulation of an engineering project is proposed in the engineering graphics subject at the University of La Laguna with 65 engineering undergraduate students. A scale to measure the perception of the use of PDLM is designed, applied and validated. Subsequently, descriptive analyses, contingency graphical analyses and non-parametric analysis of variance are performed. The results indicate a high overall reception of this type of experience and that it helps them understand how professionals work in collaborative environments. It is concluded that it is possible to respond to the demand of the industry needs in future engineers through training programs of collaborative 3D modeling environments
Using virtual worlds for online role-play
The paper explores the use of virtual worlds to support online role-play as a collaborative activity. This paper describes some of the challenges involved in building online role-play environments in a virtual world and presents some of the ideas being explored by the project in the role-play applications being developed. Finally we explore how this can be used within the context of immersive education and 3D collaborative environments
Logistics of Mathematical Modeling-Focused Projects
This article addresses the logistics of implementing projects in an
undergraduate mathematics class and is intended both for new instructors and
for instructors who have had negative experiences implementing projects in the
past. Project implementation is given for both lower and upper division
mathematics courses with an emphasis on mathematical modeling and data
collection. Projects provide tangible connections to course content which can
motivate students to learn at a deeper level. Logistical pitfalls and insights
are highlighted as well as descriptions of several key implementation
resources. Effective assessment tools, which allowed me to smoothly adjust to
student feedback, are demonstrated for a sample class. As I smoothed the
transition into each project and guided students through the use of the
technology, their negative feedback on projects decreased and more students
noted how the projects had enhanced their understanding of the course topics.
Best practices learned over the years are given along with project summaries
and sample topics. These projects were implemented at a small liberal arts
university, but advice is given to extend them to larger classes for broader

A Collaborative System Software Solution for Modeling Business Flows Based on Automated Semantic Web Service Composition
Nowadays, business interoperability is one of the key factors for assuring competitive advantage for the participant business partners. In order to implement business cooperation, scalable, distributed and portable collaborative systems have to be implemented. This article presents some of the mostly used technologies in this field. Furthermore, it presents a software application architecture based on Business Process Modeling Notation standard and automated semantic web service coupling for modeling business flow in a collaborative manner. The main business processes will be represented in a single, hierarchic flow diagram. Each element of the diagram will represent calls to semantic web services. The business logic (the business rules and constraints) will be structured with the help of OWL (Ontology Web Language).
