Impact of Immersion on Task Performance, Satisfaction, Complexity and Knowledge Acquisition in Business Analytics Context
As Business Analytics applications permeate across various industry sectors, employees need to be trained and upskilled to meet the challenge of understanding, developing and implementing the analytics methodologies. It is, therefore, critical to understand how and whether individuals immerse themselves when working on team-based analytics projects. This study builds a conceptual model that could be tested in an experimental setting on how focused immersion impacts task performance, perceived task complexity, knowledge acquisition and satisfaction
Visual authoring of virtual reality conversational scenarios for eâlearning
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to face-to-face activities being developed in a virtual format that often offers a poor experience
in areas such as education. Virtual Learning Environments have improved in recent years thanks to new technologies
such as Virtual Reality or Chatbots. However, creating Virtual Learning Environments requires advanced programming
knowledge, so this work is aimed to enable teachers to create these new environments easily. This work presents a set of
extensions for App Inventor that facilitate the authoring of mobile learning apps that use Chatbots in a Virtual Reality environment,
while simultaneously monitoring of student activity. This proposal is based on integrating block-based languages
and Business Process Model and Notation diagrams. The developed extensions were successfully implemented in an educational
app called Letâs date!. A quantitative analysis of the use of these extensions in App Inventor was also carried out,
resulting in a significant reduction in the number of blocks required. The proposed contribution has demonstrated its validity
in creating virtual learning environments through visual programming and modelling, reducing development complexity
Digital communities: context for leading learning into the future?
In 2011, a robust, on-campus, three-element Community of Practice model consisting of growing community, sharing of practice and building domain knowledge was piloted in a digital learning environment. An interim evaluation of the pilot study revealed that the three-element framework, when used in a digital environment, required a fourth element. This element, which appears to happen incidentally in the face-to-face context, is that of reflecting, reporting and revising. This paper outlines the extension of the pilot study to the national tertiary education context in order to explore the implications for the design, leadership roles, and selection of appropriate technologies to support and sustain digital communities using the four-element model

Innovating Language Education identifies main trends and areas of interest and constitutes a rich resource that includes key definitions and proofs of concept
Presentation, Technology, and Content â Studies on Consumer Behaviour in Journalism
The goal of this thesis is to extend the understanding of the effects the presentation and visuality of journalism can have on users and consumers. Further, this thesis makes a case that a focus on the presentation and visuality of journalism is a possibility for audience orientation without compromising journalistic quality. The visual presentation of journalism has become very important because of technological developments that make the reproduction of design, pictures, layout and any other relevant presentation modes so much easier. While practitioners are handling this on a daily basis, management researchers are just starting to empirically investigate related phenomena, especially in the context of journalism.
Along five empirical studies conducted in the journalism field, this thesis establishes links between the presentation, technology and content of journalism and consumer behaviour. It further identifies frameworks to approach the presentation of journalism and theoretically explains how the presentation can provide a possibility for audience orientation without compromising content. Thereupon, this research derives recommendations for theory and practitioners in order to uphold the business viability of news production

London is a globally recognised hub for technology, design and creative genius. While many cities around the world can claim to be hubs for technology entrepreneurship, Londonâs distinctive potential lies in the successful fusion of world-leading technology with world-leading design and creativity. As innovation thrives at the edge, where better to innovate than across the boundaries of these two clusters and cultures? This booklet tells the story of Fusionâs innovation journey, its partners and its unique business support. Most importantly of all it tells stories of companies that, having worked with London Fusion, have innovated and grown. We hope that it will inspire others to follow and build on our beginnings.European Regional Development Fund 2007-13

Toward a model of customer experience
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Retaining high-value and profitable customers is a major strategic objective for many companies. In mature mobile phone markets where growth has slowed, the defection of customers from one network to another has intensified and is strongly fuelled by poor Customer Experience. Trends in the service economy suggest that experience can be exploited as a means of supplying the basis of a new economic offering, ignited in part by the shift that is taking place in the analysis of peopleâs interaction with digital products. In this light, the research describes a strategic approach to the use of Information Systems as a means of improving Customer Experience. Using Action Research in a mobile telecommunications operator, a Customer Experience Monitoring and Action Response model (CEMAR) is developed that evaluates disparate customer data, residing across many systems, builds experience profiles and suggests appropriate contextual actions where experience is poor. The model provides value in identifying issues, understanding them in the context of the overall Customer Experience (over time) and dealing with them appropriately. The novelty of the approach is the synthesis of data analysis with an enhanced understanding of Customer Experience which is developed implicitly, in real-time and in advance of any instigation by the customer.Royal Academy of Engineerin

Capabilities for Big Data: An Empirical Study in a Global Pharmaceutical Company
The increasing availability of large quantities of digital data (Big Data) and advanced analytic tools is driving many industries to change their practices. Currently there are limited theoretically informed, in depth empirical studies of the processes and activities that needed to leverage Big Data strategically. This research is a response to calls by international scholars for more in depth and theoretically informed studies of on Big Data (e.g. Brynjolfsson et al., 2011; McAfee et al., 2012; Wamba et al., 2015; Braganza et al., 2017; Mikalef et al., 2017).
The study frames Big Data as a new resource and adopts the Resource Based View (RBV) and the Dynamic Capabilities (DC) perspective in order to explore the enhancement of existing capabilities and development of new capabilities required to leverage this new resource. The empirical context of this study is a global pharmaceutical company. Employing a qualitative in-depth case-study approach, this research investigates why a Multinational Corporation (MNC) in the pharmaceutical industry adopted Big Data adoption and how it identified and developed capabilities for this new resource. Data from 24 in-depth interviews and observations of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and Global managers in two project teams were analysed and synthesised using thematic analysis methods.
The findings from this study show that the use of Big Data required new and enhanced capabilities that were developed through the action of dynamic capabilities, which operated as mediators between existing capabilities and the new and enhanced capabilities. Although some elements of these dynamic capabilities were embedded in the organisational processes, the activities of senior managers played a crucial role in their development and use. Further, the findings show that the organisationâs cultural transformation was critical for the operation of the dynamic capabilities identified and the new and enhanced Big Data capabilities. In the case study company the development of a Big Data capabilities was found to be an incremental, extended process.
The study makes a number of contributions. It provides an in-depth case study of Big Data preparation in the specific context of a MNC pharmaceutical company that is of value to both academics and practitioners. It provides a theoretically based and empirically validated model of the development of capabilities associated with Big Data adoption. Finally, it makes a contribution to academic theory by contributing to the ongoing discussion in the academic literature of the utility of the concept of Dynamic Capabilities
