Combining Head-Mounted and Projector-Based Displays for Surgical Training
We introduce and present preliminary results for a hybrid display system combining head-mounted and projector-based displays. Our work is motivated by a surgical training application, where it is necessary to simultaneously provide both a high-fidelity view of a central close-up task (the surgery) and visual awareness of objects and events in the surrounding environment. In particular, for trauma surgeons it would be valuable to learn to work in an environment that is realistically filled with both necessary and distracting objects and events
Clinical Computing in Dentistry
Machines can seldom replace dentists in rightly handling the patients with optimistic human insight, considerations, creative planning and the monitoring of psychological acceptance and comfort experienced by any patient with the rehabilitation done. Intelligent computer related armamentarium with software can still help dental practitioners detect typical medical and dental signs and classify them according to certain rules more effectively. Based on image analysis algorithms, CAD systems can be used to look for signs of any tooth pathology that can be spotted in dental X-ray or cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Applying computer vision algorithms to high-resolution CBCT slices helps to a great extent in diagnosing periapical lesions like granulomas, cysts, etc., and can help creating 3-D model of a root canal that reflects its shape with sufficient precision facilitating an optimum endodontic treatment planning. Hence, computer vision systems are already able to speed up the diagnostic process and provide a valuable second opinion in doubtful cases. This can lead a dentist and the patient thoroughly experience an optimistic acceptance and satisfaction of the treatment done

Investigating the effects of odour integration in reading and learning experiences
Books are the tools used for reading novels and stories, but also for educational purposes. Conventional books have undergone a radical transformation in recent years due to the use of new technologies. However, even today the technological devices used for reading e-books are still poorly exploited, despite the fact that they represent a fundamental tool to make the reading experience more immersive by using a complete multisensory approach. In this perspective, one sense that represents an important element of human perception is the sense of smell. Consequently, authors make the hypothesis that the introduction of odours during reading sessions could increase the user experience and the learning performances. In order to demonstrate these hypotheses, the authors have defined and carried out several experimental testing sessions. The analysis of the collected data proved that the introduction of odour does not disturb the reader during reading activities but, on the contrary, can actually make the experience more immersive. Similarly, odours do not disturb studying activities, but they can instead increase the level of concentration and people's learning performance
Augmented Reality: An Overview and Five Directions for AR in Education
Augmented Reality (AR) is an emerging form of experience in which the Real World (RW) is enhanced by computer-generated content tied to specific locations and/or activities. Over the last several years, AR applications have become portable and widely available on mobile deÂvices. AR is becoming visible in our audio-visual media (e.g., news, entertainment, sports) and is beginning to enter other aspects of our lives (e.g., e-commerce, travel, marketing) in tangible and exciting ways. Facilitating ubiquitous learning, AR will give learners instant access to location-specific information compiled and provided by numerous sources (2009). Both the 2010 and 2011 Horizon Reports predict that AR will soon see widespread use on US college campuses. In prepaÂration, this paper offers an overview of AR, examines recent AR developments, explores the impact of AR on society, and evaluates the implications of AR for learning and education
