Authentication with Distortion Criteria
In a variety of applications, there is a need to authenticate content that
has experienced legitimate editing in addition to potential tampering attacks.
We develop one formulation of this problem based on a strict notion of
security, and characterize and interpret the associated information-theoretic
performance limits. The results can be viewed as a natural generalization of
classical approaches to traditional authentication. Additional insights into
the structure of such systems and their behavior are obtained by further
specializing the results to Bernoulli and Gaussian cases. The associated
systems are shown to be substantially better in terms of performance and/or
security than commonly advocated approaches based on data hiding and digital
watermarking. Finally, the formulation is extended to obtain efficient layered
authentication system constructions.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figure
Distributed Binary Detection with Lossy Data Compression
Consider the problem where a statistician in a two-node system receives
rate-limited information from a transmitter about marginal observations of a
memoryless process generated from two possible distributions. Using its own
observations, this receiver is required to first identify the legitimacy of its
sender by declaring the joint distribution of the process, and then depending
on such authentication it generates the adequate reconstruction of the
observations satisfying an average per-letter distortion. The performance of
this setup is investigated through the corresponding rate-error-distortion
region describing the trade-off between: the communication rate, the error
exponent induced by the detection and the distortion incurred by the source
reconstruction. In the special case of testing against independence, where the
alternative hypothesis implies that the sources are independent, the optimal
rate-error-distortion region is characterized. An application example to binary
symmetric sources is given subsequently and the explicit expression for the
rate-error-distortion region is provided as well. The case of "general
hypotheses" is also investigated. A new achievable rate-error-distortion region
is derived based on the use of non-asymptotic binning, improving the quality of
communicated descriptions. Further improvement of performance in the general
case is shown to be possible when the requirement of source reconstruction is
relaxed, which stands in contrast to the case of general hypotheses.Comment: to appear on IEEE Trans. Information Theor
Exploratory study to explore the role of ICT in the process of knowledge management in an Indian business environment
In the 21st century and the emergence of a digital economy, knowledge and the knowledge base economy are rapidly growing. To effectively be able to understand the processes involved in the creating, managing and sharing of knowledge management in the business environment is critical to the success of an organization. This study builds on the previous research of the authors on the enablers of knowledge management by identifying the relationship between the enablers of knowledge management and the role played by information communication technologies (ICT) and ICT infrastructure in a business setting. This paper provides the findings of a survey collected from the four major Indian cities (Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Villupuram) regarding their views and opinions about the enablers of knowledge management in business setting. A total of 80 organizations participated in the study with 100 participants in each city. The results show that ICT and ICT infrastructure can play a critical role in the creating, managing and sharing of knowledge in an Indian business environment
The Serums Tool-Chain:Ensuring Security and Privacy of Medical Data in Smart Patient-Centric Healthcare Systems
Digital technology is permeating all aspects of human society and life. This leads to humans becoming highly dependent on digital devices, including upon digital: assistance, intelligence, and decisions. A major concern of this digital dependence is the lack of human oversight or intervention in many of the ways humans use this technology. This dependence and reliance on digital technology raises concerns in how humans trust such systems, and how to ensure digital technology behaves appropriately. This works considers recent developments and projects that combine digital technology and artificial intelligence with human society. The focus is on critical scenarios where failure of digital technology can lead to significant harm or even death. We explore how to build trust for users of digital technology in such scenarios and considering many different challenges for digital technology. The approaches applied and proposed here address user trust along many dimensions and aim to build collaborative and empowering use of digital technologies in critical aspects of human society
A novel semi-fragile forensic watermarking scheme for remote sensing images
Peer-reviewedA semi-fragile watermarking scheme for multiple band images is presented. We propose to embed a mark into remote sensing images applying a tree structured vector quantization approach to the pixel signatures, instead of processing each band separately. The signature of themmultispectral or hyperspectral image is used to embed the mark in it order to detect any significant modification of the original image. The image is segmented into threedimensional blocks and a tree structured vector quantizer is built for each block. These trees are manipulated using an iterative algorithm until the resulting block satisfies a required criterion which establishes the embedded mark. The method is shown to be able to preserve the mark under lossy compression (above a given threshold) but, at the same time, it detects possibly forged blocks and their position in the whole image.

Protection of an intrusion detection engine with watermarking in ad hoc networks
Mobile ad hoc networks have received great attention in recent years, mainly due to the evolution of wireless networking and mobile computing hardware. Nevertheless, many inherent vulnerabilities exist in mobile ad hoc networks and their applications that affect the security of wireless transactions. As intrusion prevention mechanisms, such as encryption and authentication, are not sufficient we need a second line of defense, Intrusion Detection. In this pa-per we present an intrusion detection engine based on neural networks and a protection method based on watermarking techniques. In particular, we exploit information visualization and machine learning techniques in order to achieve intrusion detection and we authenticate the maps produced by the application of the intelligent techniques using a novel combined watermarking embedding method. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated under different traffic conditions, mobility patterns and visualization metrics
Biometric Authentication System on Mobile Personal Devices
We propose a secure, robust, and low-cost biometric authentication system on the mobile personal device for the personal network. The system consists of the following five key modules: 1) face detection; 2) face registration; 3) illumination normalization; 4) face verification; and 5) information fusion. For the complicated face authentication task on the devices with limited resources, the emphasis is largely on the reliability and applicability of the system. Both theoretical and practical considerations are taken. The final system is able to achieve an equal error rate of 2% under challenging testing protocols. The low hardware and software cost makes the system well adaptable to a large range of security applications
