Determining citizens’ opinions about stories in the news media: analysing Google, Facebook and Twitter
We describe a method whereby a governmental policy maker can discover citizens’ reaction to news stories. This is particularly relevant in the political world, where governments’ policy statements are reported by the news media and discussed by citizens. The work here addresses two main questions: whereabouts are citizens discussing a news story, and what are they saying? Our strategy to answer the first question is to find news articles pertaining to the policy statements, then perform internet searches for references to the news articles’ headlines and URLs. We have created a software tool that schedules repeating Google searches for the news articles and collects the results in a database, enabling the user to aggregate and analyse them to produce ranked tables of sites that reference the news articles. Using data mining techniques we can analyse data so that resultant ranking reflects an overall aggregate score, taking into account multiple datasets, and this shows the most relevant places on the internet where the story is discussed. To answer the second question, we introduce the WeGov toolbox as a tool for analysing citizens’ comments and behaviour pertaining to news stories. We first use the tool for identifying social network discussions, using different strategies for Facebook and Twitter. We apply different analysis components to analyse the data to distil the essence of the social network users’ comments, to determine influential users and identify important comments
The benefits of in silico modeling to identify possible small-molecule drugs and their off-target interactions
Accepted for publication in a future issue of Future Medicinal Chemistry.The research into the use of small molecules as drugs continues to be a key driver in the development of molecular databases, computer-aided drug design software and collaborative platforms. The evolution of computational approaches is driven by the essential criteria that a drug molecule has to fulfill, from the affinity to targets to minimal side effects while having adequate absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) properties. A combination of ligand- and structure-based drug development approaches is already used to obtain consensus predictions of small molecule activities and their off-target interactions. Further integration of these methods into easy-to-use workflows informed by systems biology could realize the full potential of available data in the drug discovery and reduce the attrition of drug candidates.Peer reviewe
What Do Freshmen Really Know about Research? Assess before You Teach
The article describes an effort to assess the information literacy skills of entering first-year college students. An instrument was developed and information was gathered on students\u27 experience and comfort in conducting library research as well as their perceived competence with specific information literacy skills. In addition, students completed a skills test to assess specific knowledge and skills relating to information literacy. Entering first-year students generally self-reported their skills to be less than excellent. This finding was supported by the results of the skills test. Strengths and weaknesses in information literacy skills are reported, as well as implications for librarians who assess and teach these skills to students

Real-time new product development in financial services: Some managerial implications
A review of the various models of New Product Development (NPD) process shows that although different approaches have been proposed, they are in fact all variants on a linear theme: some may include feedback loops, but they all essentially advocate that certain steps precede, or are preceded by, others. An inevitable consequence on the Internet/World Wide Web (WWW or Web) is that such models are no longer applicable. Based on the lessons learned from the development of a new financial service offered via the Internet, we show how such assumptions of linearity need no longer be a constraint. Sentiment Analysis Using Collaborated Opinion Mining
Opinion mining and Sentiment analysis have emerged as a field of study since
the widespread of World Wide Web and internet. Opinion refers to extraction of
those lines or phrase in the raw and huge data which express an opinion.
Sentiment analysis on the other hand identifies the polarity of the opinion
being extracted. In this paper we propose the sentiment analysis in
collaboration with opinion extraction, summarization, and tracking the records
of the students. The paper modifies the existing algorithm in order to obtain
the collaborated opinion about the students. The resultant opinion is
represented as very high, high, moderate, low and very low. The paper is based
on a case study where teachers give their remarks about the students and by
applying the proposed sentiment analysis algorithm the opinion is extracted and

Simple identification tools in FishBase
Simple identification tools for fish species were included in the FishBase information system from its inception. Early tools made use of the relational model and characters like fin ray meristics. Soon pictures and drawings were added as a further help, similar to a field guide. Later came the computerization of existing dichotomous keys, again in combination with pictures and other information, and the ability to restrict possible species by country, area, or taxonomic group. Today, www.FishBase.org offers four different ways to identify species. This paper describes these tools with their advantages and disadvantages, and suggests various options for further

Reaction to New Security Threat Class
Each new identified security threat class triggers new research and
development efforts by the scientific and professional communities. In this
study, we investigate the rate at which the scientific and professional
communities react to new identified threat classes as it is reflected in the
number of patents, scientific articles and professional publications over a
long period of time. The following threat classes were studied: Phishing; SQL
Injection; BotNet; Distributed Denial of Service; and Advanced Persistent
Threat. Our findings suggest that in most cases it takes a year for the
scientific community and more than two years for industry to react to a new
threat class with patents. Since new products follow patents, it is reasonable
to expect that there will be a window of approximately two to three years in
which no effective product is available to cope with the new threat class
