Liquid fuel spray processes in high-pressure gas flow

    Get PDF
Atomization of single liquid jets injected downstream in high pressure and high velocity airflow was investigated to determine the effect of airstream pressure on mean drop size as measured with a scanning radiometer. For aerodynamic - wave breakup of liquid jets, the ratio of orifice diameter D sub o to measured mean drop diameter D sub m which is assumed equal to D sub 32 or Sauter mean diameter, was correlated with the product of the Weber and Reynolds numbers WeRe and the dimensionless group G1/square root of c, where G is the gravitational acceleration, 1 the mean free molecular path, and square root of C the root mean square velocity, as follows; D sub o/D sub 32 = 1.2 (WeRe) to the 0.4 (G1/square root of c) to the 0.15 for values of WeRe 1 million and an airstream pressure range of 0.10 to 2.10 MPa

A method of calibrating wind velocity sensors with a modified gas flow calibrator

    Get PDF
A procedure was described for calibrating air velocity sensors in the exhaust flow of a gas flow calibrator. The average velocity in the test section located at the calibrator exhaust was verified from the mass flow rate accurately measured by the calibrator's precision sonic nozzles. Air at elevated pressures flowed through a series of screens, diameter changes, and flow straighteners, resulting in a smooth flow through the open test section. The modified system generated air velocities of 2 to 90 meters per second with an uncertainty of about two percent for speeds below 15 meters per second and four percent for the higher speeds. Wind tunnel data correlated well with that taken in the flow calibrator

A method for testing low-volume orchard sprayers

A method is described for full-scale testing of orchard sprayers with outputs up to 100 gallons per acre. Performance is assessed from deposits obtained on waxed cards and treated microscope slides

A highly efficient engineering tool for three-dimensional scramjet flowfield and heat transfer computations

    Get PDF
The SIMPLE-based parabolic flow code, SHIP3D, was under development for use as a parametric design and analysis tool for scramjets. Some capabilities and applications of the code are demonstrated, and a report on its current status is given. The focus is on the combustor for which the code was mostly used. Recently, it was also applied to nozzle flows. Code validation results are presented for combustor unit problems involving film cooling, transverse fuel injection, and nozzle test. A parametric study of a film cooled or transpiration cooled Mach 16 combustor is also conducted to illustrate the application of the code to a design problem

Detection of Large Bodies of Water for Heterogeneous Swarm Applications

    Get PDF
Multiple robot systems are becoming popular, as introducing more robots into a system generally means that the system is able to finish a task quickly, as well as making the system more robust. Generally, these systems are homogenous in nature as they are easier to build, test and conceptualise. More applications of these types of systems in a heterogeneous sense is becoming a must, as these robots are acting in more than one medium such as on land and underwater. In this paper a subsystem of a heterogeneous swarm is investigated where a land based robot is to drive up to the edge of a pool and stop autonomously, allowing for the transfer of an object from an underwater robot. To detect the edge of a pool an Xbox Kinect sensor is used as it was found that by using the IR feed of the camera the problem becomes significantly simpler
