Interworking Architectures in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks: An Algorithmic Overview
The scarce availability of spectrum and the proliferation of
smartphones, social networking applications, online gaming
etc., mobile network operators (MNOs) are faced with an
exponential growth in packet switched data requirements on
their networks. Haven invested in legacy systems (such as
HSPA, WCDMA, WiMAX, Cdma2000, LTE, etc.) that have
hitherto withstood the current and imminent data usage
demand, future and projected usage surpass the capabilities of the evolution of these individual technologies. Hence, a more critical, cost-effective and flexible approach to provide ubiquitous coverage for the user using available spectrum is of high demand. Heterogeneous Networks make use of these legacy systems by allowing users to connect to the best network available and most importantly seamlessly handover active sessions amidst them. This paper presents a survey of interworking architectures between IMT 2000 candidate networks that employ the use of IEFT protocols such as MIP, mSCTP, HIP, MOBIKE, IKEV2 and SIP etc. to bring about this much needed capacity
Engineering of interworking TINA-based telecommunication services
This paper describes a Service Creation approach being developed in the EU funded ACTS TOSCA (TINA Open Service Creation Architecture) project to rapidly develop validated TINA based multimedia telecommunications services. The approach is based around object-oriented software frameworks in SDL which are specialized towards services by means of graphical paradigm tools.
Further, in TOSCA, the need for service interworking across service provider domains via federation has been recognized in order to allow users to join service sessions offered by providers they are not customers of. However, service interworking may cause undesired behavior - the so called service interaction phenomenon. This paper focuses on this issue and the underlying technology of the service creation approach with emphasis on how service federation has been implemented

to achieve ubiquitous access and seamless
mobility in heterogeneous wireless networks. In
this article we develop a comprehensive framework
to categorize interworking solutions by
defining a generic set of interworking levels and
its related key interworking mechanisms. The
proposed framework is used to analyze some of
the most relevant interworking solutions being
considered in different standardization bodies.
More specifically, I-WLAN and GAN approaches
for WLAN and cellular integration, solutions
for WiMAX and 3GPP LTE/SAE interworking,
and the forthcoming IEEE 802.21 standard are
discussed from the common point of view provided

Toward a North American Standard for Mobile Data Services
The rapid introduction of digital mobile communications systems is an important part of the emerging digital communications scene. These developments pose both a potential problem and a challenge. On one hand, these separate market driven developments can result in an uncontrolled mixture of analog and digital links which inhibit data modem services across the mobile/Public Switched network (PSTN). On the other hand, the near coincidence of schedules for development of some of these systems, i.e., Digital Cellular, Mobile Satellite, Land Mobile Radio, and ISDN, provides an opportunity to address interoperability problems by defining interfaces, control, and service standards that are compatible among these new services. In this paper we address the problem of providing data services interoperation between mobile terminals and data devices on the PSTN. The expected data services include G3 Fax, asynchronous data, and the government's STU-3 secure voice system, and future data services such as ISDN. We address a common architecture and a limited set of issues that are key to interoperable mobile data services. We believe that common mobile data standards will both improve the quality of data service and simplify the systems for manufacturers, data users, and service providers
A novel load-balancing scheme for cellular-WLAN heterogeneous systems with cell-breathing technique
This paper proposes a novel load-balancing scheme for an operator-deployed cellular-wireless local area network (WLAN) heterogeneous network (HetNet), where the user association is controlled by employing a cell-breathing technique for the WLAN network. This scheme eliminates the complex coordination and additional signaling overheads between the users and the network by allowing the users to simply associate with the available WLAN networks similar to the traditional WLAN-first association, without making complex association decisions. Thus, this scheme can be easily implemented in an existing operator-deployed cellular-WLAN HetNet. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated in terms of load distribution between cellular and WLAN networks, user fairness, and system throughput, which demonstrates the superiority of the proposed scheme in load distribution and user fairness, while optimizing the system throughput. In addition, a cellular-WLAN interworking architecture and signaling procedures are proposed for implementing the proposed load-balancing schemes in an operator-deployed cellular-WLAN HetNet
Frameworks: the future of formal software development?
It could be argued that the primary issue to be dealt with in software engineering today is re-use of software. Current software development rarely, if ever, starts from nothing. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the development of specifications. To overcome this problem, various works have attempted to show how specifications can be built using architectural principles. We discuss one such approach in particular, the Architectural Semantics of Open Distributed Processing. We show the limitations of this work with regard to the architecting of specifications and propose a new approach, based on frameworks. To highlight the approach we use the work currently being done in the TOSCA project in its development of a service creation and validation environment for telecommunication services
