    Automatic Laser Pointer Detection Algorithm for Environment Control Device Systems Based on Template Matching and Genetic Tuning of Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems

    In this paper we propose a new approach for laser-based environment device control systems based on the automatic design of a Fuzzy Rule-Based System for laser pointer detection. The idea is to improve the success rate of the previous approaches decreasing as much as possible the false offs and increasing the success rate in images with laser spot, i.e., the detection of a false laser spot (since this could lead to dangerous situations). To this end, we propose to analyze both, the morphology and color of a laser spot image together, thus developing a new robust algorithm. Genetic Fuzzy Systems have also been employed to improve the laser spot system detection by means of a fine tuning of the involved membership functions thus reducing the system false offs, which is the main objective in this problem.     Camera-Based Shooting Simulator using Color Thresholding Techniques

    This paper presents the camera-based shooting simulator, where the shooter shots the target using a laser pointer attached on the weapon. A camera is attached on the weapon to capture the image of laser shot and circular target. The red color thresholding techniques are employed for detecting the laser spot on the target. From the experiments, it is obtained that the proposed system could detect both circular target and laser spot under different background environments. Further the proposed algorithm is able to compute the shooting score properly

    Development of a handheld fiber-optic probe-based raman imaging instrumentation: raman chemlighter

    Raman systems based on handheld fiber-optic probes offer advantages in terms of smaller sizes and easier access to the measurement sites, which are favorable for biomedical and clinical applications in the complex environment. However, there are several common drawbacks of applying probes for many applications: (1) The fixed working distance requires the user to maintain a certain working distance to acquire higher Raman signals; (2) The single-point-measurement ability restricts realizing a mapping or scanning procedure; (3) Lack of real-time data processing and a straightforward co-registering method to link the Raman information with the respective measurement position. The thesis proposed and experimentally demonstrated various approaches to overcome these drawbacks. A handheld fiber-optic Raman probe with an autofocus unit was presented to overcome the problem arising from using fixed-focus lenses, by using a liquid lens as the objective lens, which allows dynamical adjustment of the focal length of the probe. An implementation of a computer vision-based positional tracking to co-register the regular Raman spectroscopic measurements with the spatial location enables fast recording of a Raman image from a large tissue sample by combining positional tracking of the laser spot through brightfield images. The visualization of the Raman image has been extended to augmented and mixed reality and combined with a 3D reconstruction method and projector-based visualization to offer an intuitive and easily understandable way of presenting the Raman image. All these advances are substantial and highly beneficial to further drive the clinical translation of Raman spectroscopy as potential image-guided instrumentation

    Context-aware gestural interaction in the smart environments of the ubiquitous computing era

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyTechnology is becoming pervasive and the current interfaces are not adequate for the interaction with the smart environments of the ubiquitous computing era. Recently, researchers have started to address this issue introducing the concept of natural user interface, which is mainly based on gestural interactions. Many issues are still open in this emerging domain and, in particular, there is a lack of common guidelines for coherent implementation of gestural interfaces. This research investigates gestural interactions between humans and smart environments. It proposes a novel framework for the high-level organization of the context information. The framework is conceived to provide the support for a novel approach using functional gestures to reduce the gesture ambiguity and the number of gestures in taxonomies and improve the usability. In order to validate this framework, a proof-of-concept has been developed. A prototype has been developed by implementing a novel method for the view-invariant recognition of deictic and dynamic gestures. Tests have been conducted to assess the gesture recognition accuracy and the usability of the interfaces developed following the proposed framework. The results show that the method provides optimal gesture recognition from very different view-points whilst the usability tests have yielded high scores. Further investigation on the context information has been performed tackling the problem of user status. It is intended as human activity and a technique based on an innovative application of electromyography is proposed. The tests show that the proposed technique has achieved good activity recognition accuracy. The context is treated also as system status. In ubiquitous computing, the system can adopt different paradigms: wearable, environmental and pervasive. A novel paradigm, called synergistic paradigm, is presented combining the advantages of the wearable and environmental paradigms. Moreover, it augments the interaction possibilities of the user and ensures better gesture recognition accuracy than with the other paradigms
