    A switching mechanism framework for optimal coupling of predictive scheduling and reactive control in manufacturing hybrid control architectures

    Nowadays, manufacturing systems are seeking control architectures that offer efficient production performance and reactivity to disruptive events. Dynamic hybrid control architectures are a promising approach as they are not only able to switch dynamically between hierarchical, heterarchical and semi-heterarchical structures, they can also switch the level of coupling between predictive scheduling and reactive control techniques. However, few approaches address an efficient switching process in terms of structure and coupling. This paper presents a switching mechanism framework in dynamic hybrid control architectures, which exploits the advantages of hierarchical manufacturing scheduling systems and heterarchical manufacturing execution systems, and also mitigates the respective reactivity and optimality drawbacks. The main feature in this framework is that it monitors the system dynamics online and shifts between different operating modes to attain the most suitable production control strategy. The experiments were carried out in an emulation of a real manufacturing system to illustrate the benefits of including a switching mechanism in simulated scenarios.     A control methodology for automated manufacturing

    The application of computers in the manufacturing industry has substantially altered the control procedures used to program a whole manufacturing process. Currently, one the problems which automated manufacturing systems are experiencing is the lack of a good overall control system. The subject of this research has been centred on the identification of the problems involved in current methods of control and their advantages and disadvantages in an automated manufacturing system. As a result, a different type of control system has been proposed which distributes both the control and the decision making. This control model is an hybrid of hierarchical and hierarchical control systems which takes advantage of the best points offered by both types of control structures. The Durham FMS rig has been used as a testbed for an automated manufacturing system to which the hybrid control system has been applied. The implementation of this control system would not have been possible without the design and development of a System Integration Tool (SIT). The system is capable of real-time scheduling of the system activities. Activities within the system are monitored in real-time and a recording of the system events is available, which allows the user to analyse the activities of the system off-line. A network independent communication technique was developed for the Durham FMS which allowed the manufacturing cells to exercise peer-to-peer communication. The SIT also allowed the integration of equipment from different vendors in the FMS

    Irregular Pagination MisnumberedFlexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) appeared upon the manufacturing scene in the early 1970s, installations presently number in the thousands. However, many current installations in fact lack flexibility, do not operate in real-time and are prohibitively expensive. Therefore there are obvious benefits to be gained from making improvements to existing flexible manufacturing systems. Research conducted for this thesis focused on two major areas. The implementation of the FMS control system on a SCADA package and the development of an auction based scheduling system. This entailed the development of a hybrid control model composed of three distinct layers; factory, cell and intelligent entity. Key portions of both the factory and cell controllers were then implemented so as to create a minimal system. This has been completed to the point where the auction algorithm has been implemented and tested in an appropriate framework. In achieving the goals mentioned above a number of novel design concepts have been utilised. There are two which are most important, these are the use of low cost modules for the construction of a flexible co-operative manufacturing system, and the ability of this system to operate in a physically distributed area via a Local Area Network. Meaning it is inherently adaptable and resistant to failure. These novel design concepts were ingrained throughout the entire three layered control model. It is felt that this research has succeeded in demonstrating the possibility of implementing a FMS control system on a low cost SCADA package using low cost software and computing elements. The ability of the distributed, auction-based approach to operate successfully within this system, has also been demonstrated through simulation

    Combined make-to-order and make-to-stock in a food production system

    The research into multi-product production/inventory control systems has mainly assumed one of the two strategies: Make-to-Order (MTO) or Make-to-Stock (MTS). In practice, however, many companies cater to an increasing variety of products with varying logistical demands (e.g. short due dates, specific products) and production characteristics (e.g. capacity usage, setup) to different market segments and so they are moving to more MTO-production. As a consequence they operate under a hybrid MTO-MTS strategy. Important issues arising out of such situations are, for example, which products should be manufactured to stock and which ones on order and, how to allocate capacity among various MTO-MTS products. This paper presents the state-of-the-art literature review of the combined MTO-MTS production situations. A variety of production management issues in the context of food processing companies, where combined MTO-MTS production is quite common, are discussed in details. The authors propose a comprehensive hierarchical planning framework that covers the important production management decisions to serve as a starting point for evaluation and further research on the planning system for MTO-MTS situations.

    New product development is one of the most powerful but difficult activities in business. It is also a very important factor affecting final product quality. There are many techniques available for new product development. Experimental design is now regarded as one of the most significant techniques. In this article, we will discuss how to use the technique of experimental design in developing a new product - an extrusion press. In order to provide a better understanding of this specific process, a brief description of the extrusion press is presented. To ensure the successful development of the extrusion press, customer requirements and expectations were obtained by detailed market research. The critical and non-critical factors affecting the performance of the extrusion press were identified in preliminary experiments. Through conducting single factorial experiments, the critical factorial levels were determined. The relationships between the performance indexes of the extrusion press and the four critical factors were determined on the basis of multi-factorial experiments. The mathematical models for the performance of the extrusion press were established according to a central composite rotatable design. The best combination of the four critical factors and the optimum performance indexes were determined by optimum design. The results were verified by conducting a confirmatory experiment. Finally, a number of conclusions became evident.

    Splitting hybrid Make-To-Order and Make-To-Stock demand profiles

    In this paper a demand time series is analysed to support Make-To-Stock (MTS) and Make-To-Order (MTO) production decisions. Using a purely MTS production strategy based on the given demand can lead to unnecessarily high inventory levels thus it is necessary to identify likely MTO episodes. This research proposes a novel outlier detection algorithm based on special density measures. We divide the time series' histogram into three clusters. One with frequent-low volume covers MTS items whilst a second accounts for high volumes which is dedicated to MTO items. The third cluster resides between the previous two with its elements being assigned to either the MTO or MTS class. The algorithm can be applied to a variety of time series such as stationary and non-stationary ones. We use empirical data from manufacturing to study the extent of inventory savings. The percentage of MTO items is reflected in the inventory savings which were shown to be an average of 18.1%.Comment: demand analysis; time series; outlier detection; production strategy; Make-To-Order(MTO); Make-To-Stock(MTS); 15 pages, 9 figure
