Transmission of variable bit rate video over an Orwell ring
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is fast emerging as the preferred information
transfer technique for future Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (BISON),
offering the advantages of both the simplicity of time division circuit switched techniques
and the flexibility of packet switched techniques. ATM networks with their inherent rate
flexibility offer new opportunities for the efficient transmission of real time Variable Bit
Rate (VBR) services over such networks. Since most services are VBR in nature when
efficiently coded, this could in turn lead to a more efficient utilisation of network resources
through statistical multiplexing. Video communication is typical of such a service and could
benefit significantly if supported with VBR video over ATM networks. [Continues.
Robust P2P Live Streaming
Projecte fet en col.laboraciĂł amb la FundaciĂł i2CATThe provisioning of robust real-time communication services (voice, video, etc.) or media contents through the Internet in a distributed manner is an important challenge,
which will strongly influence in current and future Internet evolution. Aware of this, we
are developing a project named Trilogy leaded by the i2CAT Foundation, which has as
main pillar the study, development and evaluation of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Live
streaming architectures for the distribution of high-quality media contents. In this
context, this work concretely covers media coding aspects and proposes the use of
Multiple Description Coding (MDC) as a flexible solution for providing robust and
scalable live streaming over P2P networks. This work describes current state of the art
in media coding techniques and P2P streaming architectures, presents the
implemented prototype as well as its simulation and validation results
New interaction models for 360Âș video
Esta dissertação tem como principal objectivo a incorporação de um mecanismo de buffering num sistema de multimĂdia, capaz de oferecer experiĂȘncias multivista adaptĂĄveis. A incorporação deste mecanismo vem provocar melhorias na qualidade de serviço e na qualidade de experiĂȘncia.
O sistema recorre ao protocolo MPEG-DASH e a uma cùmara convencional para detecção dos movimentos da cabeça do utilizador. O sistema incorpora ainda um mecanismo de adaptação automåtica da qualidade, ajuståvel às condiçÔes da rede.
O mecanismo desenvolvido Ă© composto por um proxy e tem o objectivo de minimizar o atraso existente na transição de vistas. O proxy serĂĄ capaz de enviar trĂȘs vistas em simultĂąneo, duas em baixa qualidade, enquanto a vista principal serĂĄ enviada e apresenta ao utilizador em alta qualidade.Sempre que existe um novo pedido por parte do utilizador, o mecanismo irĂĄ comutar entre as vistas enviadas atĂ© receber a resposta por parte do servidor.
Deste modo, esta dissertação pretende identificar as dificuldades que se colocam relativamente Ă disponibilização e transmissĂŁo eficiente deste tipo de conteĂșdos, assim como os compromissos necessĂĄrios ao nĂvel da qualidade de experiĂȘncia do utilizador.Today, the fast technological evolution and the significant increase in the demand for multimedia content has boosted the development of the transmission mechanisms used for this purpose.This development had repercussions in several areas, such as the immersive experiences that include the 360Âș contents. Whether through live streaming or using on demand services, the quality of service and experience have become two points whose development has assumed high importance.
The capture and reproduction of 360Âș content allows transmitting an immersive view of reality at a given moment. With this approach, the industry intends to provide a product with better audiovisual quality, more comfortable for the user and that allows a better interaction with the same. An example of this is the choice of the view that most appeals to us in a given event (for example, football matches or concerts).
This dissertation has as main objective the incorporation of a buffering mechanism in a multimedia system, able to offer adaptive multivista experiments. The system uses the MPEG-DASH protocol for efficient use of network resources and a conventional camera for detecting the movements of the user's head, selecting the points of view that one wishes to visualize in real time. The system also incorporates an automatic quality adjustment mechanism, adjustable to the network conditions.
The buffering mechanism is intended to increase the quality of experience and the quality of service, minimizing the delay in the transition of views. The mechanism will consist of a proxy capable of sending three views simultaneously. Of these views, two will be sent in low quality, while the main view will be sent and presented to the user in high quality. Whenever there is a new request from the user, the mechanism will switch between sent views until it receives the response from the server.
Based on these assumptions, the dissertation intends to identify the challenges that are posed regarding the availability and efficient transmission of 360Âș content, as well as the necessary commitments regarding the quality of user experience. This last point is particularly significant, taking into account the network requirements and the volume of data presented by the transmissions of this type of content
Energy-efficient wireless communication
In this chapter we present an energy-efficient highly adaptive network interface architecture and a novel data link layer protocol for wireless networks that provides Quality of Service (QoS) support for diverse traffic types. Due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks, adaptations in bandwidth scheduling and error control are necessary to achieve energy efficiency and an acceptable quality of service. In our approach we apply adaptability through all layers of the protocol stack, and provide feedback to the applications. In this way the applications can adapt the data streams, and the network protocols can adapt the communication parameters
Energy efficiency of error correction on wireless systems
Since high error rates are inevitable to the wireless environment, energy-efficient error-control is an important issue for mobile computing systems. We have studied the energy efficiency of two different error correction mechanisms and have measured the efficiency of an implementation in software. We show that it is not sufficient to concentrate on the energy efficiency of error control mechanisms only, but the required extra energy consumed by the wireless interface should be incorporated as well. A model is presented that can be used to determine an energy-efficient error correction scheme of a minimal system consisting of a general purpose processor and a wireless interface. Quality aspects of Internet telephony
Internet telephony has had a tremendous impact on how people communicate.
Many now maintain contact using some form of Internet telephony.
Therefore the motivation for this work has been to address the quality aspects
of real-world Internet telephony for both fixed and wireless telecommunication.
The focus has been on the quality aspects of voice communication,
since poor quality leads often to user dissatisfaction. The scope of the work
has been broad in order to address the main factors within IP-based voice
communication.
The first four chapters of this dissertation constitute the background
material. The first chapter outlines where Internet telephony is deployed
today. It also motivates the topics and techniques used in this research.
The second chapter provides the background on Internet telephony including
signalling, speech coding and voice Internetworking. The third chapter
focuses solely on quality measures for packetised voice systems and finally
the fourth chapter is devoted to the history of voice research.
The appendix of this dissertation constitutes the research contributions.
It includes an examination of the access network, focusing on how calls are
multiplexed in wired and wireless systems. Subsequently in the wireless
case, we consider how to handover calls from 802.11 networks to the cellular
infrastructure. We then consider the Internet backbone where most of our
work is devoted to measurements specifically for Internet telephony. The
applications of these measurements have been estimating telephony arrival
processes, measuring call quality, and quantifying the trend in Internet telephony
quality over several years. We also consider the end systems, since
they are responsible for reconstructing a voice stream given loss and delay
constraints. Finally we estimate voice quality using the ITU proposal PESQ
and the packet loss process.
The main contribution of this work is a systematic examination of Internet
telephony. We describe several methods to enable adaptable solutions
for maintaining consistent voice quality. We have also found that relatively
small technical changes can lead to substantial user quality improvements.
A second contribution of this work is a suite of software tools designed to
ascertain voice quality in IP networks. Some of these tools are in use within
commercial systems today
Video-assisted Overtaking System enabled by V2V Communications
V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) is a promising technology to diminish road hazards and increase driving safety. This thesis focuses in the transmission of video between vehicles (V2V, Vehicle-to-Vehicle) in an overtaking situation, helping drivers to be more aware and less error-prone in these situations. In the implementation, the vehicle reads from vehicle's CAN and GPS data to setup the system, streams his Line of Sight to the overtaking vehicle and uses DSRC as the communication technology
