Solution of the Multi-objective Economic and Emission Load Dispatch Problem Using Adaptive Real Quantum Inspired Evolutionary Algorithm

    Get PDF
Economic load dispatch is a complex and significant problem in power generation. The inclusion of emission with economic operation makes it a Multi-objective economic emission load dispatch (MOEELD) problem. So it is a tough task to resolve a constrained MOEELD problem with antagonistic multiple objectives of emission and cost. Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) have been widely used for solving such complex multi-objective problems. However, the performance of EAs on such problems is dependent on the choice of the operators and their parameters, which becomes a complex issue to solve in itself. The present work is carried out to solve a Multi-objective economic emission load dispatch problem using a Multi-objective adaptive real coded quantum-inspired evolutionary algorithm (MO-ARQIEA) with gratifying all the constraints of unit and system. A repair-based constraint handling and adaptive quantum crossover operator (ACO) are used to satisfy the constraints and preserve the diversity of the suggested approach. The suggested approach is evaluated on the IEEE 30-Bus system consisting of six generating units. These results obtained for different test cases are compared with other reputed and well-known techniques

Enhancement of Metaheuristic Algorithm for Scheduling Workflows in Multi-fog Environments

Whether in computer science, engineering, or economics, optimization lies at the heart of any challenge involving decision-making. Choosing between several options is part of the decision- making process. Our desire to make the "better" decision drives our decision. An objective function or performance index describes the assessment of the alternative's goodness. The theory and methods of optimization are concerned with picking the best option. There are two types of optimization methods: deterministic and stochastic. The first is a traditional approach, which works well for small and linear problems. However, they struggle to address most of the real-world problems, which have a highly dimensional, nonlinear, and complex nature. As an alternative, stochastic optimization algorithms are specifically designed to tackle these types of challenges and are more common nowadays. This study proposed two stochastic, robust swarm-based metaheuristic optimization methods. They are both hybrid algorithms, which are formulated by combining Particle Swarm Optimization and Salp Swarm Optimization algorithms. Further, these algorithms are then applied to an important and thought-provoking problem. The problem is scientific workflow scheduling in multiple fog environments. Many computer environments, such as fog computing, are plagued by security attacks that must be handled. DDoS attacks are effectively harmful to fog computing environments as they occupy the fog's resources and make them busy. Thus, the fog environments would generally have fewer resources available during these types of attacks, and then the scheduling of submitted Internet of Things (IoT) workflows would be affected. Nevertheless, the current systems disregard the impact of DDoS attacks occurring in their scheduling process, causing the amount of workflows that miss deadlines as well as increasing the amount of tasks that are offloaded to the cloud. Hence, this study proposed a hybrid optimization algorithm as a solution for dealing with the workflow scheduling issue in various fog computing locations. The proposed algorithm comprises Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In dealing with the effects of DDoS attacks on fog computing locations, two Markov-chain schemes of discrete time types were used, whereby one calculates the average network bandwidth existing in each fog while the other determines the number of virtual machines existing in every fog on average. DDoS attacks are addressed at various levels. The approach predicts the DDoS attack’s influences on fog environments. Based on the simulation results, the proposed method can significantly lessen the amount of offloaded tasks that are transferred to the cloud data centers. It could also decrease the amount of workflows with missed deadlines. Moreover, the significance of green fog computing is growing in fog computing environments, in which the consumption of energy plays an essential role in determining maintenance expenses and carbon dioxide emissions. The implementation of efficient scheduling methods has the potential to mitigate the usage of energy by allocating tasks to the most appropriate resources, considering the energy efficiency of each individual resource. In order to mitigate these challenges, the proposed algorithm integrates the Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) technique, which is commonly employed to enhance the energy efficiency of processors. The experimental findings demonstrate that the utilization of the proposed method, combined with the Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) technique, yields improved outcomes. These benefits encompass a minimization in energy consumption. Consequently, this approach emerges as a more environmentally friendly and sustainable solution for fog computing environments

Metaheuristic Optimization of Power and Energy Systems: Underlying Principles and Main Issues of the `Rush to Heuristics'

    Get PDF
In the power and energy systems area, a progressive increase of literature contributions that contain applications of metaheuristic algorithms is occurring. In many cases, these applications are merely aimed at proposing the testing of an existing metaheuristic algorithm on a specific problem, claiming that the proposed method is better than other methods that are based on weak comparisons. This ‘rush to heuristics’ does not happen in the evolutionary computation domain, where the rules for setting up rigorous comparisons are stricter but are typical of the domains of application of the metaheuristics. This paper considers the applications to power and energy systems and aims at providing a comprehensive view of the main issues that concern the use of metaheuristics for global optimization problems. A set of underlying principles that characterize the metaheuristic algorithms is presented. The customization of metaheuristic algorithms to fit the constraints of specific problems is discussed. Some weaknesses and pitfalls that are found in literature contributions are identified, and specific guidelines are provided regarding how to prepare sound contributions on the application of metaheuristic algorithms to specific problems

The Search and Rescue optimization algorithm (SAR) is a recent metaheuristic inspired by the exploration’s behaviour for humans throughout search and rescue processes. The SAR is applied to solve the Combined Emission and Economic Dispatch (CEED) and Economic Load Dispatch (ELD). The comparative performance of SAR against several metaheuristic methods was performed to assess its reliability. These algorithms include the Earthworm optimization algorithm (EWA), Grey wolf optimizer (GWO), Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (TSA) and Elephant Herding Optimization (EHO) for the same two networks study. Also, the proposed SAR method is compared with other literature algorithms such as Sine Cosine algorithm, Monarch butterfly optimization, Artificial Bee Colony, Chimp Optimization Algorithm, Moth search algorithm. The cases applied in this work are seven cases: three cases of 6-unit for ELD issue, three cases of 6-unit for CEED issue and 10-unit for ELD problem. The evaluation of counterparts is performed for 30 different runs based on measuring the Friedman rank test and robustness curves. Furthermore, the standard deviation, maximum objective function, minimum, mean and values over 30 different runs are applied for a statistical analysis of all used techniques. The obtained results proved the superiority of the SAR in determining the fitness function of ELD and CEED is minimizing the cost of fuel for ELD and emission and fuel costs for CEED
