    Semi-hidden markov models for visible light communication channels

    A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering, Johannesburg 2018Visible Light Communication (VLC) is an emerging field in optical wireless communication that uses light emitting diodes (LEDs) for data transmission. LEDs are being widely adopted both indoors and outdoors due to their low cost, long lifespan and high efficiency. Furthermore, LEDs can be modulated to provide both illumination and wireless communication. There is also potential for VLC to be incorporated into future smart lighting systems. One of the current challenges in VLC is being able to deal with noise and interference; including interference from other dimmed, Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) LEDs. Other noise includes natural light from the sun and artificial light from other non-modulating light sources. Modelling these types of channels is one of the first steps in understanding the channel and eventually designing techniques for mitigating the effects of noise and interference. This dissertation presents a semi-hidden Markov model, known as the Fritchman model, that discretely models the effects of as well as errors introduced from noise and interference in on-off keying modulated VLC channels. Models have been developed for both the indoor and outdoor environments and can be used for VLC simulations and designing error mitigation techniques. Results show that certain channels are able to be better modelled than others. Experimental error distributions shows insights into the impact that PWM interference has on VLC channels. This can be used for assisting in the development of error control codes and interference avoidance techniques in standalone VLC systems, as well as systems where VLC and smart lighting coexist.     Este proyecto de tesis tiene como objetivo crear un prototipo de punto de acceso para una red luz visible en el software GNU Radio, este prototipo puede ser incluido en cualquier diagrama de comunicación full-duplex, pero sus características se adaptan de mejor forma a la comunicación por luz visible por lo que no se recomienda su uso para otros tipos de comunicación. Para usar GNU Radio se utilizan equipos USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral) y un diagrama de comunicación por luz visible ya existente, ya que crear las interfaces de esta están fuera del alcance de este proyecto. Se explica el modelo de comunicación basado en TDMA (time division multiple access) usado, las funciones de los bloques creados para que el punto de acceso funcione, así como el código interno de cada uno de estos bloques tanto para el lado del cliente como del punto de acceso mismo. Por último, se muestra la reducción del uso efectivo del canal provocado por el uso de este sistema bajo diferentes condiciones

    ABSTRACT Kampung houses are houses in kampung area of the city. Kampung House oftenly transformed into others use as urban dynamics. One of the transfomation is related to the commercial activities addition by the house owner. It make house with full private space become into mixused house with more public spaces or completely changed into full public commercial building. This study investigate the spatial transformation pattern of the kampung houses due to their commercial activities addition. Site observations, interviews and questionnaires were performed to study the spatial transformation. This study found that in kampung houses, the spatial transformation pattern was depend on type of commercial activities and owner perceptions, and there are several steps of the spatial transformation related the commercial activity addition.     From Preface: The 15th International Conference „Dynamical Systems - Theory and Applications” (DSTA 2019, 2-5 December, 2019, Lodz, Poland) gathered a numerous group of outstanding scientists and engineers who deal with widely understood problems of theoretical and applied dynamics. Organization of the conference would not have been possible without great effort of the staff of the Department of Automation, Biomechanics and Mechatronics of the Lodz University of Technology. The patronage over the conference has been taken by the Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland. It is a great pleasure that our event was attended by over 180 researchers from 35 countries all over the world, who decided to share the results of their research and experience in different fields related to dynamical systems. This year, the DSTA Conference Proceedings were split into two volumes entitled „Theoretical Approaches in Non-Linear Dynamical Systems” and „Applicable Solutions in Non-Linear Dynamical Systems”. In addition, DSTA 2019 resulted in three volumes of Springer Proceedings in Mathematics and Statistics entitled „Control and Stability of Dynamical Systems”, „Mathematical and Numerical Approaches in Dynamical Systems” and „Dynamical Systems in Mechatronics and Life Sciences”.
