Dynamic non-linear system modelling using wavelet-based soft computing techniques
The enormous number of complex systems results in the necessity of high-level and cost-efficient
modelling structures for the operators and system designers. Model-based approaches offer a very
challenging way to integrate a priori knowledge into the procedure. Soft computing based models
in particular, can successfully be applied in cases of highly nonlinear problems. A further reason
for dealing with so called soft computational model based techniques is that in real-world cases,
many times only partial, uncertain and/or inaccurate data is available.
Wavelet-Based soft computing techniques are considered, as one of the latest trends in system
identification/modelling. This thesis provides a comprehensive synopsis of the main wavelet-based
approaches to model the non-linear dynamical systems in real world problems in conjunction with
possible twists and novelties aiming for more accurate and less complex modelling structure.
Initially, an on-line structure and parameter design has been considered in an adaptive Neuro-
Fuzzy (NF) scheme. The problem of redundant membership functions and consequently fuzzy
rules is circumvented by applying an adaptive structure. The growth of a special type of Fungus
(Monascus ruber van Tieghem) is examined against several other approaches for further
justification of the proposed methodology.
By extending the line of research, two Morlet Wavelet Neural Network (WNN) structures have
been introduced. Increasing the accuracy and decreasing the computational cost are both the
primary targets of proposed novelties. Modifying the synoptic weights by replacing them with
Linear Combination Weights (LCW) and also imposing a Hybrid Learning Algorithm (HLA)
comprising of Gradient Descent (GD) and Recursive Least Square (RLS), are the tools utilised for
the above challenges. These two models differ from the point of view of structure while they share
the same HLA scheme. The second approach contains an additional Multiplication layer, plus its
hidden layer contains several sub-WNNs for each input dimension. The practical superiority of
these extensions is demonstrated by simulation and experimental results on real non-linear
dynamic system; Listeria Monocytogenes survival curves in Ultra-High Temperature (UHT)
whole milk, and consolidated with comprehensive comparison with other suggested schemes.
At the next stage, the extended clustering-based fuzzy version of the proposed WNN schemes, is
presented as the ultimate structure in this thesis. The proposed Fuzzy Wavelet Neural network
(FWNN) benefitted from Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) clustering feature, updated by a
modified Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. One of the main aims of this thesis is to illustrate how the GMM-EM scheme could be used not only for detecting useful knowledge from
the data by building accurate regression, but also for the identification of complex systems.
The structure of FWNN is based on the basis of fuzzy rules including wavelet functions in the
consequent parts of rules. In order to improve the function approximation accuracy and general
capability of the FWNN system, an efficient hybrid learning approach is used to adjust the
parameters of dilation, translation, weights, and membership. Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is
employed for wavelet parameters adjustment together with Weighted Least Square (WLS) which
is dedicated for the Linear Combination Weights fine-tuning. The results of a real-world
application of Short Time Load Forecasting (STLF) further re-enforced the plausibility of the
above technique
BEAT CLASSIFICATION USING HYBRID WAVELET TRANSFORM BASED FEATURES AND SUPERVISED LEARNING APPROACH
This paper describes an automatic heartbeat recognition based on QRS detection, feature extraction and classification. In this paper five different type of ECG beats of MIT BIH arrhythmia database are automatically classified. The proposed method involves QRS complex detection based on the differences and approximation derivation, inversion and threshold method. The computation of combined Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DTCWT) of hybrid features coefficients are obtained from the QRS segmented beat from ECG signal which are then used as a feature vector. Then the feature vectors are given to Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and k- Nearest Neighbor (kNN) classifier for automatic classification of heartbeat. The performance of the proposed system is measured by sensitivity, specificity and accuracy measures
Review of Health Prognostics and Condition Monitoring of Electronic Components
To meet the specifications of low cost, highly reliable electronic devices, fault diagnosis techniques play an essential role. It is vital to find flaws at an early stage in design, components, material, or manufacturing during the initial phase. This review paper attempts to summarize past development and recent advances in the areas about green manufacturing, maintenance, remaining useful life (RUL) prediction, and like. The current state of the art in reliability research for electronic components, mainly includes failure mechanisms, condition monitoring, and residual lifetime evaluation is explored. A critical analysis of reliability studies to identify their relative merits and usefulness of the outcome of these studies' vis-a-vis green manufacturing is presented. The wide array of statistical, empirical, and intelligent tools and techniques used in the literature are then identified and mapped. Finally, the findings are summarized, and the central research gap is highlighted
Failure Prognosis of Wind Turbine Components
Wind energy is playing an increasingly significant role in the World\u27s energy supply mix. In North America, many utility-scale wind turbines are approaching, or are beyond the half-way point of their originally anticipated lifespan. Accurate estimation of the times to failure of major turbine components can provide wind farm owners insight into how to optimize the life and value of their farm assets. This dissertation deals with fault detection and failure prognosis of critical wind turbine sub-assemblies, including generators, blades, and bearings based on data-driven approaches. The main aim of the data-driven methods is to utilize measurement data from the system and forecast the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of faulty components accurately and efficiently. The main contributions of this dissertation are in the application of ALTA lifetime analysis to help illustrate a possible relationship between varying loads and generators reliability, a wavelet-based Probability Density Function (PDF) to effectively detecting incipient wind turbine blade failure, an adaptive Bayesian algorithm for modeling the uncertainty inherent in the bearings RUL prediction horizon, and a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for characterizing the bearing damage progression based on varying operating states to mimic a real condition in which wind turbines operate and to recognize that the damage progression is a function of the stress applied to each component using data from historical failures across three different Canadian wind farms

INTELLIGENT TECHNIQUE OF CANCELING MATERNAL ECG IN FECG EXTRACTION
ABSTRACT. In this paper, we propose a technique of artificial intelligence called adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for canceling maternal electrocardiogram (MECG) in fetal electrocardiogram extraction (FECG).This technique is used to estimate the MECG present in the abdominal signal of a pregnant woman. The FECG is then extracted by subtracting the estimated MECG from the abdominal signal. Performance of the proposed method in terms of mean square error, signal to noise ratio is compared with neural network. Our results show that this method is a simple and powerful means for the extraction of FECG
Artificial intelligence-based regional flood frequency analysis methods : a scoping review
Flood is one of the most destructive natural disasters, causing significant economic damage and loss of lives. Numerous methods have been introduced to estimate design floods, which include linear and non-linear techniques. Since flood generation is a non-linear process, the use of linear techniques has inherent weaknesses. To overcome these, artificial intelligence (AI)-based non-linear regional flood frequency analysis (RFFA) techniques have been introduced over the last two decades. There are limited articles available in the literature discussing the relative merits/demerits of these AI-based RFFA techniques. To fill this knowledge gap, a scoping review on the AI-based RFFA techniques is presented. Based on the Scopus database, more than 1000 articles were initially selected, which were then screened manually to select the most relevant articles. The accuracy and efficiency of the selected RFFA techniques based on a set of evaluation statistics were compared. Furthermore, the relationships among countries and researchers focusing on AI-based RFFA techniques are illustrated. In terms of performance, artificial neural networks (ANN) are found to be the best performing techniques among all the selected AI-based RFFA techniques. It is also found that Australia, Canada, and Iran have published the highest number of articles in this research field, followed by Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), India, and China. Future research should be directed towards identification of the impacts of data quantity and quality, model uncertainty and climate change on the AI-based RFFA techniques
Extraction Of Fetal Electrocardiogram Using An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy System
In this paper, adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was used for the cancellation of maternal electrocardiogram (MECG) in fetal electrocardiogram extraction (FECG) from the composite abdominal electrocardiogram (AECG). This technique is used to estimate the MECG present in the abdominal signal of a pregnant woman. The FECG is then extracted by subtracting the estimated MECG from the abdominal signal. In the furtherance of extraction, MATLAB (version 7.6) was used to code the system in order to generate the maternal heartbeat signal and the fetal heartbeat signal which were added to form the measured signal. For the fetal heartbeat signal to be recovered from the interference (maternal heartbeat) signal, a reference signal (which is a clean version of the original maternal heartbeat signal) was introduced in the system. It is this signal that cancelled the maternal heartbeat signal in the measured signal, thereby leaving the fetal heartbeat signal as an error signal. However, though the recovered signal still contained some traces of the maternal heartbeat signal, performance of the soft computing technique applied is in terms of the capability of adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system in removing the overlapping between the MECG and the FECG signals. The results obtained show that this method is a simple and powerful means for the extraction of Fetal Electrocardiogram. Novel implementation technique for a wavelet-based broadband signal detection system
This thesis reports on the design, simulation and implementation of a novel
Implementation for a Wavelet-based Broadband Signal Detection System.
There is a strong interest in methods of increasing the resolution of sonar systems for
the detection of targets at sea. A novel implementation of a wideband active sonar
signal detection system is proposed in this project. In the system the Continuous
Wavelet Transform is used for target motion estimation and an
Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy inference System (ANFIS) is adopted to minimize the
noise effect on target detection. A local optimum search algorithm is introduced in this
project to reduce the computation load of the Continuous Wavelet Transform and make
it suitable for practical applications.
The proposed system is realized on a Xilinx University Program Virtex-II Pro
Development System which contains a Virtex II pro XC2VP30 FPGA chip with 2
powerPC 405 cores. Testing for single target detection and multiple target detection
shows the proposed system is able to accurately locate targets under
reverberation-limited underwater environment with a Signal-Noise-Ratio of up to -30db,
with location error less than 10 meters and velocity estimation error less than 1 knot.
In the proposed system the combination of CWT and local optimum search algorithm
significantly saves the computation time for CWT and make it more practical to real
applications. Also the implementation of ANFIS on the FPGA board indicates in the
future a real-time ANFIS operation with VLSI implementation would be possible
