Gaming on the edge: using seams in ubicomp games

    Get PDF
Outdoor multi-player games are an increasingly popular application area for ubiquitous computing, supporting experimentation both with new technologies and new user experiences. This paper presents an outdoor ubicomp game that exploits the gaps or seams that exist in complex computer systems. Treasure is designed so that players move in and out of areas of wireless network coverage, taking advantage not only of the connectivity within a wireless ‘hotspot’ but of the lack of connectivity outside it. More broadly, this paper discusses how the notion of seamful design can be a source of design ideas for ubicomp games

Human Factors and Work Factors Related with the Causes of Accidents on Kemplang Workers (Home Industry) in the Village Tebing Gerinting Year 2011

Background : Informal workers are "underserved working population" and not get the health care work as expected, while about 80% of workers are informal workers. The problem occurs in one worker was accident. Work accident an average of 6000 people die every day, the equivalent of one person every 15 seconds, or 2.2 million people a year. South Sumatra in the month of January-September 2008 to 4 cases a day, is fairly high for a region which has about 5481 companies. The high incidence of accidents caused by human factors and occupational factors Methods : This study is a quantitative research with cross sectional approach. Independent and dependent variables assessed simultaneously at one time, so no follow up. Based on calculations of the sample, the sample size was 38 respondents. Results : The study found that there was no significant relationship between age with the incidence of accidents, no significant relationship between the sexes in the incidence of accidents, there was no significant relationship between age with the incidence of accidents, no significant relationship between duration of employment with the occurrence of accidents, there was no significant relationship between the roasting process, and no significant relationship between work shifts with the occurrence of accidents. Conclusion : still high number of accidents, to the holding of training and health education work. Kemplang advice for managers should be more concerned about the issues that will be caused by work, worker, or the environment. The health efforts program centers performed optimally, to minimize the Genesis crash can be a training or counseling, health education work

Human factors approaches to evaluating outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy services: a systematic review.

Background: The expansion in terms of available treatment options and models of care has led to a growing global momentum for outpatient antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) services. A systematic review was undertaken to explore Human Factors aspects relating to OPAT service delivery and to evaluate whether OPAT is amenable to description using the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS 2.0) model. Method: Following a preliminary search, a search string was applied to four databases, including Medline, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts and PsychINFO. Inclusion criteria ensured only articles published after the year 2000 and written in English were accepted. The methodological quality of studies was assessed by three reviewers. Narrative synthesis was performed to uncover the key interactions between work system entities which underpin OPAT processes and outcomes as described using the SEIPS 2.0 model. Results: A total of twenty-seven studies were deemed eligible for the final review. Of these, most described sample populations representative of the population under study, while duration of the studies varied from a few months to years. Some studies evaluated a single model of care whilst others evaluated all three currently available models. The breadth and scope of the studies included enabled extraction of rich Human Factors data describing barriers and enablers to service provision. Conclusion: OPAT is a service which offers significant benefits to both patients and care providers. These benefits include patient satisfaction and wellbeing, as well as financial performance. OPAT is a complex sociotechnical system, and a systems approach may offer the opportunity to enhance system design, maximising system performance. This review demonstrates that the service can be better understood using the SEIPS 2.0 model to identify key work system interactions that support performance

The online environment has become a significant focus of the everyday behaviour and activities of individuals and organisations in contemporary society. The increasing mediation of communication has led to concerns about the potential risks and associated negative experiences which can occur to users, particularly children and young people. This is related to the emergence of the online environment as a location for criminal and abusive behaviour (e.g., harassment, sexual exploitation, fraud, hacking, malware). One of the key aspects of understanding online victimisation and engagement in criminal behaviours is the characteristics of online communication that are related to the affordances of the technologies, services and applications which constitute digital environments. The aim of this paper is to examine the influence of these characteristics on individual and group behaviour, as well as the associated opportunities for victimisation and criminal behaviour. These issues are of relevance for those involved in the design and implementation of technologies and services, as the ability to assess their potential use in this way can enhance strategies for improving the security of systems and users. It can also inform educational strategies for increasing user understanding of potential informational, privacy and personal risks, and associated steps to improve their security and privacy. Each of the main characteristics of mediated communication is examined, as well as their potential impact on individual and group behaviour, and associated opportunities for victimisation and offending. The article ends by considering the importance of recognising these issues when designing and implementing new technologies, services and applications

    Wayfinding as an Embodied Experience

Isn’t the body assumed already to be used as we wayfind? Research on wayfinding has traditionally been defined as being a means of getting from A to B, with most studies always focusing on the concept that wayfinding is about using the quickest or shortest possible route

    SARSCEST (human factors)

People interact with the processes and products of contemporary technology. Individuals are affected by these in various ways and individuals shape them. Such interactions come under the label 'human factors'. To expand the understanding of those to whom the term is relatively unfamiliar, its domain includes both an applied science and applications of knowledge. It means both research and development, with implications of research both for basic science and for development. It encompasses not only design and testing but also training and personnel requirements, even though some unwisely try to split these apart both by name and institutionally. The territory includes more than performance at work, though concentration on that aspect, epitomized in the derivation of the term ergonomics, has overshadowed human factors interest in interactions between technology and the home, health, safety, consumers, children and later life, the handicapped, sports and recreation education, and travel. Two aspects of technology considered most significant for work performance, systems and automation, and several approaches to these, are discussed

It is a well-know fact that there is no unbreakable system in the world. Nowadays, creating secure information system is a big challenge. Besides, it is a desired goal for all IT security managers and engineers in the world. Why is it so hard to create a secure system? One of the answers is human factors
