Fostering the entrepreneur-opportunity nexus in entrepreneurship education - a design science approach
The doctoral thesis uses the Design Science Research approach to investigate key concepts in entrepreneurship education and subsequently develops, tests and evaluates a course design for opportunity recognition in an academic setting at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Starting with a systematic literature review on entrepreneurial competences published in 2020 (Tittel and Terzidis, 2020), 57 critical entrepreneurial competences were compiled and categorized into an entrepreneurial competence framework. In addition, a conceptual definition of competence and entrepreneurial competence was developed and presented to the scientific community.
A qualitative study with 26 experts, including five entrepreneurship lecturers, ten entrepreneurs, seven consultants and four company experts, was conducted to validate the list of competences identified in the recent academic literature. The interviews were analyzed based on the text and content analysis framework proposed by Mayring (2014). As a result, the experts could confirm 39 of the initial entrepreneurial competencies. In addition, 22 new competences could be identified through inductive coding of the interviews. Based on that, critical implications for developing entrepreneurial education could be developed and proposed. Both studies identified business idea generation and opportunity recognition as critical entrepreneurial competencies and highly relevant concepts for entrepreneurship. Therefore, a pedagogical intervention was developed, tested and evaluated in 12 entrepreneurship courses at the KIT.
A bibliometric analysis was performed to find scientific evidence and relevant associations between Ikigai and entrepreneurship. Using the Ikigai (生き甲斐) framework, a traditional Japanese concept for "life worth living", the four key pillars (What you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, what you can be paid for) were operationalized and implemented into the pedagogical setting. The opportunity recognition course framework was then quantitatively evaluated with a structural equation model (SEM) proposed by Hair et al. (2021). As a result, the personal values-business idea fit was identified to influence the business idea’s desirability significantly. Bibliometric analysis of sustainable business performance: where are we going? A science map of the field
Sustainable business performance is a rapidly growing field of
research that encompasses both academia and business. The purpose
of this study is to identify current and emerging research
trends and provide a comprehensive map of the knowledge
structure in the field of sustainable business performance, consistent
with recent developments in bibliometric research. Therefore,
this article offers a comprehensive bibliometric analysis based on
the performance analysis and science mapping of the academic
literature related to sustainable business performance published
between 1996 and 2021 in 807 publications on the Web of
Science. By using two powerful bibliometric visual software tools,
VosViewer and CiteSpace, and by applying various bibliometric
analyses such as co-citation analysis, co-authorship analysis, bibliographic
coupling, co-occurrence of keywords analysis, burst
detection analysis, and timeline view analysis, this paper presents
the fundamental characteristics of the body of knowledge in this
research field, while identifying the most influential publications,
institutions, source titles, countries, and authors, and the evolution
of keywords these years. The paper concludes with a discussion
of the most popular research topics and identification of
emerging research pattern areas that should be on the future
research agenda for researchers interested in sustainable business
performance
The influence of leadership on employees' employability: a bibliometric analysis, systematic literature review, and research agenda
IntroductionPolicymakers, researchers, and practitioners have recently begun treating employability-an individual's ability to possess and continuously adjust and acquire up-to-date competencies, flexibility, adaptability, and openness to change-as crucial to enabling employees to respond to ubiquitous and rapid changes in organizations (e.g., changing tasks and work-related processes). Research into ways to enhance employability, particularly through supervisor leadership, which, for example, facilitates training and competence development, has thus grown in popularity. A review on leadership as an antecedent of employability is both evident and timely. This review thus addresses the question of whether a supervisor's leadership influences employees' employability, and in which contexts and through which mechanisms it does so.MethodsAs preliminary study we conducted a bibliometric analysis (which corroborated employability's recent rise in popularity) and as main study we conducted a systematic literature review. For this, the authors independently searched for articles, which met the inclusion criteria and subsequently were included for full text analysis. The authors also independently used the forward and backward snowballing technique for identifying additional articles which met the inclusion criteria and subsequently were included for full text analysis. The procedure resulted in 17 articles in total.ResultsMost of the articles identified positive relationships among several conceptualizations of supervisor leadership and employee employability, such as transformational leadership and leader-member exchange, and to a lesser extent, servant leadership and perceived supervisor support. This review suggests that such relationships occur across different work contexts, such as educational, SMEs, healthcare, and several other industries, and these contexts also vary geographically.DiscussionThe relationships among supervisor leadership and employee employability are largely explained using a social exchange perspective, which means that the positive influence of leadership on employability is itself influenced by a two-way social exchange relationship between supervisor and employees. The quality of the dyadic relationship between leader and followers thus determines the extent to which leaders offer valuable resources such as training and feedback, which subsequently enhances employees' employability. This review demonstrates that investing in supervisors' leadership is a valuable HRM strategy that fosters employability, and it identifies practical implications that inform policy and practice and sets an agenda for future employability research

The Influence of Scientific Claims on an Emerging Environmental Issue
The environmental movement relies on scientific claims to justify its calls for protectionist policies. These claims can be followed in the scientific literature using bibliometric methods such as citation analysis. Citation analysis was used to deconstruct the literature of endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) sciences as it emerged and developed time from 1980 through 2004. This study explored how the attributes of scientific papers such as topic, journal, experimental model, document type, and support or negation of hypotheses impacted their influence (quantified as times cited) within the field over time. To accomplish this, unique bibliographic data were acquired for each attribute of the more than 3,400 studies identified by keyword searches. Content-specific data (non-bibliographic) were generated for the nearly 500 articles cited \u3e 45 times. The influence of individual articles on the field of EDC science, and their citation relationships was also visually represented using the bibliometric mapping. Results demonstrated that a confluence of scientific claims propelled the EDC issue into a prominent position within overall environmental literature. The EDC term appeared nowhere before 1993, but its use rapidly gained traction thereafter until by 2004 it was found in over 3,400 published papers. The results of this study suggest that the influence of individual scientific claims within the literature of EDC science were not random, but were impacted by both bibliographic and non-bibliographic attributes. How and Why do Researchers Reference Data? A Study of Rhetorical Features and Functions of Data References in Academic Articles
Data reuse is a common practice in the social sciences. While published data
play an essential role in the production of social science research, they are
not consistently cited, which makes it difficult to assess their full scholarly
impact and give credit to the original data producers. Furthermore, it can be
challenging to understand researchers' motivations for referencing data. Like
references to academic literature, data references perform various rhetorical
functions, such as paying homage, signaling disagreement, or drawing
comparisons. This paper studies how and why researchers reference social
science data in their academic writing. We develop a typology to model
relationships between the entities that anchor data references, along with
their features (access, actions, locations, styles, types) and functions
(critique, describe, illustrate, interact, legitimize). We illustrate the use
of the typology by coding multidisciplinary research articles (n=30)
referencing social science data archived at the Inter-university Consortium for
Political and Social Research (ICPSR). We show how our typology captures
researchers' interactions with data and purposes for referencing data. Our
typology provides a systematic way to document and analyze researchers'
narratives about data use, extending our ability to give credit to data that

Examining Scholarly Influence: A Study in Hirsch Metrics and Social Network Analysis
This dissertation research is focused on how we, as researchers, ‘influence’ others researchers. In particular, I am concerned with the notion of what constitutes the ‘influence’ of a scholar and how ‘influence’ is conferred upon scholars. This research is concerned with the construct called ‘scholarly influence’. Scholarly influence is of interest because a clear “theory of scholarly influence” does not yet exist. Rather a number of surrogate measures or concepts that are variable are used to evaluate the value of one’s academic work. ‘Scholarly influence’ is broken down into ‘ideational influence’ or the influence that one has through publication and the uptake of the ideas presented in the publication, and ‘social influence’ or the influence that one has through working with other researchers. Finally through the use of the definition of ‘scholarly influence’ this dissertation tries to commence a definition of ‘quality’ in scholarly work

Innovation in a Circular Economy: Conceptual, empirical and policy underpinnings for transition through an eco-innovation pathway
As the world seeks answers to the defining challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability, several hypotheses are being canvased in the search for a solution to decouple economic growth and social development from resource exploitation. Among those, the circular economy (CE) emerged as an operational response defined by its opposition to a harvesting-wasting economic model, proposing instead restorative and regenerative activities. But reconfiguring existing paradigms is not trivial. Aligning innovation activities with more sustainable paths is a central requirement for the desired socio-techno-economic paradigm shift. This work proposes that a new pathway is needed for gearing the sustainable innovation agenda towards a CE, and foster structural change. CE-inducing eco-innovation (EI) must, however, be monitored and measured, and implications to socio-cultural agents, organisational strategies and policy priorities have to be bore in mind, if we are to ascertain if progress is being made. As CE and the EI – CE nexus research is still in its early days, this work adds to the discussion by contributing (1) to the theoretical development of these concepts and their interrelations; (2) to the empirical definition of pro CE EI proxies; and (3) to the prospective anticipation of CE developments. Within the sustainability debate, and using an innovation studies perspective, this research adopted a mixed methods approach, using both quantitative and qualitative methods such as literature reviews, bibliometrics, patent and trademark analysis (using the specific case of Portugal), and foresight techniques (Delphi study). The overall findings suggest that CE’s main ideas are arguably timely. CE’s establishment within the sustainability debate seems, nevertheless, dependent on overcoming short term barriers constraining its further development, of technological and economic nature, but also of a socio-cultural kind. CE is argued as a multidimensional, multi-actor approach reliant on “systemic transformative” innovation, thus dependent on a combination of “harder”, (technological, R&D-driven), and “softer” (non-technological change in social and business culture) knowledge. The empirical diagnosis of an innovation system’s pro circularity tendencies proved to be informative as to assess convergence to circularity. In the Portuguese case, it successfully shed light on ongoing dynamics related with signs of effective transformation towards CE activities, even if highlighting structural limitations associated with systemic failures regarding actors and networks. Redirecting innovation systems towards a more “circular” paradigm is, therefore, deeply dependent on an institutional “coordination role” enabling “framework conditions” directly linked to a systemic action. That is, associating bottom-up measures to top-down policies in a coherent strategic roadmap, in order to avoid mismatches and contradictory incentives. This pointed to the usefulness of rethinking innovation policy design. In one hand, to address market and system failures, leading to underinvestment and lack of connectivity in innovation. In the other hand, to promote the diffusion of CE related information for enterprises and civil society, in order to encourage market awareness and change mind-sets towards “circular” behaviours. As the conceptual and practical implementation challenge remains pressing, this work added important underpinnings for fine-tuning a CE inducing “policy mix”.Num mundo crescentemente interdependente, as alterações climáticas e a sustentabilidade ambiental são questões globais complexas. A importância de dissociar desenvolvimento da exploração de recursos tem propiciado um alargamento de horizontes a novos conceitos. Nesse contexto, a economia circular emergiu como uma resposta operacional, definida pela sua oposição ao modelo económico atual de exploração/desperdício. Contrapõe, ao invés, processos restaurativos e regenerativos. A reconfiguração dos paradigmas existentes, a este nível, não é, contudo, algo trivial.
Uma vez que o alinhamento das atividades de inovação com objetivos mais sustentáveis é um requisito central na alteração de paradigma sócio-tecno-económico, este trabalho foca a necessidade de orientar a agenda de inovação para a “circularidade”. A eco-inovação pro-circularidade deve, no entanto, ser monitorizada e medida, e as implicações para os agentes socioculturais, estratégias organizacionais e prioridades políticas levadas em conta, se quisermos verificar o seu progresso.
Nesse âmbito, pretendeu-se contribuir para o debate em curso contribuindo para: 1) uma melhor compreensão teórica do papel da eco-inovação na implementação de uma economia circular; 2) a definição e teste de proxies empíricas de inovação pro-circularidade; 3) o desenvolvimento de uma visão prospetiva de futuros desenvolvimentos nesta área. No contexto do debate da sustentabilidade, e usando uma perspetiva baseada nos estudos da inovação, foram adotados métodos quantitativos e qualitativos, incluindo revisões de literatura, métodos bibliométricos, análise de patentes e de marcas comerciais (usando o caso específico de Portugal), assim como o uso do método prospetivo Delphi.
As conclusões gerais sugerem que as principais ideias da economia circular são indiscutivelmente oportunas. Dentro do debate da sustentabilidade o estabelecimento de uma economia circular parece, no entanto, dependente de se vencerem barreiras de curto prazo, de natureza tecnológica, económica e sociocultural. A abordagem preconizada pela economia circular é assim tida como multidimensional, multi-ator, dependente de uma inovação sistémica "transformadora”, compreendendo não só inovação tecnológica, mas também mudanças institucionais abrangentes quanto a políticas públicas, mercados e práticas sociais. O diagnóstico empírico das tendências pró-circularidade de um sistema de inovação provou ser informativo nessa avaliação. No caso português, permitiu conhecer as atuais dinâmicas, sublinhando sinais de transformação efetivas em direção a atividades circulares, ao mesmo tempo que assinalou as limitações estruturais associadas a falhas sistémicas quanto aos atores e redes (interconexões). Redirecionar os sistemas de inovação para um paradigma mais “circular” é, portanto, profundamente dependente de um “papel de coordenação” institucional que permita “condições de enquadramento” diretamente ligadas a uma ação sistémica. Isto é, associando medidas bottom-up e top-down num roteiro estratégico coerente, a fim de evitar desequilíbrios e incentivos contraditórios. Importa, por isso, repensar igualmente os instrumentos das políticas de inovação. Por um lado, resolvendo falhas de mercado e sistema, que levam a sub-investimento e falta de conectividade. Por outro, promovendo a difusão de informação para empresas e sociedade civil, a fim de estimular a conscientização e mudar mentalidades em relação a comportamentos “circulares”.

The Developmental Trajectory of a Decade of Research on Mental Health and Wellbeing amongst Graduate Students: A Bibliometric Analysis
The journey of graduate students through academia can be a difficult road plagued with several roadblocks due to several intersectional factors. These difficulties often impact the students’ mental health with severe consequences on their well-being and personal and academic achievements. There is a critical need for researchers to conduct studies in response to the positive mental well-being for this group of trainees, considering their peculiar role in the scholarly environment. This study aimed to explore the scientific research on the health and well-being of graduate students; typify the scientific landscape and development trajectory, cooperation networks, and fundamental research areas; and identify areas of needed research in this field. A bibliometric analysis of articles indexed in Scopus and published in the past decade (2012 to 2021) was undertaken. The results revealed that the research on graduate students’ mental health and well-being has increased over the years, significantly in the past two years, probably owing to the incidence of the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns around remote learning. The highest number of publications was from the United Kingdom (U.K.) and United States (U.S.), while the organizational affiliations were mainly from universities. The most prominent source type of publications was journal articles. The result also shows a weak collaboration across countries and organizations.
