A comfirmatory factor analysis of a newly integrated multidimensional school engagement scale

Inconsistencies in measures of school engagement in the literature have called for a re-conceptualization of the school engagement construct. Although many researchers view school engagement as a multifaceted construct, to our knowledge, none of the available instruments have integrated all the important domains that represent its multifaceted nature. This study is our first attempt to examine the psychometric properties of a newly integrated Multidimensional School Engagement Scale (MSES). Data were gathered from 2,381 secondary school students, aged 14 to 16, from 40 day schools in northern Malaysia. Exploratory factor analysis and confi rmatory factor analytic techniques were used to examine the instrument. Based on the available literature, we posited an a priori hypothesis that the scales could be explained by three fi rst-order factors and one second-order factor. We used SPSS v.12 and AMOS 6.0 to analyze the data. Findings supported our hypothesis that the school engagement construct can be explained by three fi rst-order factors and one hierarchical factor comprising cognitive engagement, behavioural engagement, and psychological engagement sub-scales. Findings also showed acceptable internal consistency reliability for the overall scale and the three specific sub-scales of adolescent school engagement

Pack of self-study resources given in Part II contains Glossary of mining terms, tasks and activities aimed at developing a range of vocabulary necessary for mining, different functions and functional exponents to be used in academic and professional environment as well as tasks developing self-awareness, self-assessment and self-organisation skills. Testing points for different grammar structuresare given in Part III. Indices at the end of each part easify the use of the coursebook. The coursebook contains illustrations, various samples of visualizing technical information. The coursebook is designed for ESP students of non-linguistic universities. Are Books Becoming Extinct in Academic Libraries?

Purpose: Academic librarians who are planning for the future need to be knowledgeable about the short- and long-range outlook for print. They must also consider what will happen if libraries abolish most or all of their books. Current and future academic e-book usage is explored, and ideas for response to collection changes are suggested. Design/methodology/approach: This article examines a wide range of studies and comments on this timely topic. Findings: The disparity between the reception of e-books in the general population and the adoption of them in the academic world suggests that print is still important to faculty and students. Given the advances in e-book technological, the increasing popularity of online/distance education courses, the adoption of the new EPUB 3 format, and the ubiquity of mobile devices, e-books are expected to increasingly replace print volumes in academic libraries. Originality/value: What has received little attention in the literature is the complexity of the issue of e-book reception in the academic world. This article looks at current and future e-book usage from the perspective of several large studies on diverse aspects of academic life, including students’ perceptions of libraries, their information-seeking behaviors, faculty research habits and information needs, students’ reading habits, and the impact of emerging technologies on teaching and learning. Providing insight into current and future academic e-book trends, this article suggests practical ways to respond to these trends

Reading Through the Doldrums: Engaging Adolescence Reparatively Through Contemporary Coming of Age Comic Texts

In this dissertation, I explore the complicated emotional landscape of girls’ adolescence as represented in contemporary coming of age comic texts, to two ends. First, following the work of Eve Sedgwick, I seek to conduct and model reparative readings, which require the reader’s emotional investment in and vulnerability to her readings. In these readings, the reader stays open to surprise in making her interpretations; forgoing the knowledge she thinks she has on the subject at hand. Reading reparatively, adult educators have the ability to confer what Avery Gordon calls “complex personhood” on their research subjects, as well as part versions of themselves. Using psychoanalytic understandings of the work of adolescence, with DW Winnicott as my main interlocutor, I read growing up as difficult work, and adolescents’ acting out and expressing their bad feelings as evidence of that fact. Attending in turn to risk-taking and passionate love, hate and aggression, boredom and rejections of futurity and the relationship between reading and finding love both in and outside of the family, I read contemporary comic representations of girls growing up as offering adult readers valuable knowledge about both the self and the adolescents we encounter in our life and work. The dissertation ends on a call to incorporate comics in our educational practice; not exclusively as texts to teach young people, but for reading experiences in which we are ourselves implicated
