    Computational methods for new clinical applications using imaging techniques

    Esta tesis tiene por objetivo desarrollar diferentes métodos computacionales con aplicación clínica en varias enfermedades. De este modo, la investigación aquí presentada pretende aumentar el conocimiento sobre cómo el análisis y el estudio de los datos procedentes de técnicas de imagen pueden convertirse en un gran valor clínico para los profesionales de la medicina. Por lo tanto, dichos métodos pueden ser incorporados en la práctica clínica, lo que supone un beneficio para el paciente.Por un lado, la mejora de los diferentes dispositivos de imagen aumenta el abanico de posibilidades de análisis y presentación de los datos. Algunas técnicas de imagen arrojan directamente datos numéricos que tradicionalmente sólo se usaban para la monitorización de enfermedades. Sin embargo, dichos datos pueden ser empleados como biomarcadores tanto para el diagnóstico como para la predicción de enfermedades mediante la inteligencia artificial. Hoy en día, la inteligencia artificial se utiliza en muchos campos ya que todo lo que proporciona datos es abordable por estas nuevas tecnologías. Parece que no hay límite y se están desarrollando nuevas aplicaciones que hace sólo unas décadas parecían imposibles.Por otro lado, las técnicas de imagen nos permiten analizar diferentes partes del cuerpo humano en los respectivos pacientes y compararlas con controles sanos. Del mismo modo, con las imágenes se puede realizar el seguimiento de los tratamientos aplicados en dichos pacientes y, así, verificar su eficacia. Además, estas tecnologías, que proporcionan imágenes de alta resolución, son fáciles de usar, rentables y objetivas.Para resumir, esta tesis se ha centrado en desarrollar varias aplicaciones clínicas, basadas en los métodos numéricos descritos, que podrían ser una poderosa herramienta para aportar mayor información que ayude a los clínicos en la toma de decisiones.This thesis aims to develop different computational methods with clinical application in various diseases. In this way, the research presented here aims to increase knowledge on how the analysis and study of data from imaging techniques can be of great clinical value to medical professionals. Therefore, these methods can be incorporated into clinical practice, which is of benefit to the patient. On the one hand, the improvement of different imaging devices increases the range of possibilities for data analysis and presentation. Some imaging techniques directly yield numerical data that were traditionally only used for disease monitoring. However, these data can be used as biomarkers for both diagnosis and disease prediction using artificial intelligence. Today, artificial intelligence is used in many fields as everything that provides data can be addressed by these new technologies. There seems to be no limit and new applications are being developed that only a few decades ago seemed impossible. On the other hand, imaging techniques allow us to analyse different parts of the human body in the respective patients and compare them with healthy controls. In the same way, imaging can be used to monitor the treatments applied to these patients and, thus, verify their efficacy. Moreover, these technologies, which provide high-resolution images, are easy to use, cost-effective and objective. To summarise, this thesis has focused on developing several clinical applications, based on the described numerical methods, which could be a powerful tool to provide further information to help clinicians in decision making.<br /

    Measurement of Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability with Wearable Devices: A Systematic Review

    Wearables are a ubiquitous trend in both commercial and academic settings as they easily enable tracking and monitoring of physiological parameters such as heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV). This paper presents a literature review to survey the existing Neuro-Information-Systems (NeuroIS) literature on HR and HRV with a focus on measurement based on wearable devices. We addressed the following four research questions: Who published HR and HRV research? What kind of HR and HRV research has been published? With which wearable devices was HR and HRV measured? How reliable and valid are HR and HRV measurements based on wearable devices? Our review provides answers to these questions and concludes that further efforts are needed to advance the field from both a theoretical and methodological perspective

    This study aims to explore the ‘missing gap' between the values of an Accounting firm and the preference shown by Maaori on how they would like to be approached when wanting to build a trusted relationship within a business sense. This study makes use of qualitative approaches in which data is collected primarily through interviews and analysed to produce results and recommendations. The study found that Maaori would like to be approached in a way that makes sense to them and also identifies with their cultural proceedings. It also provides insight into how important trust is when establishing a relationship with Maaori. The study recommends that further studies conducted should interview a wider variety of focus groups to add different elements to this research and that FIRM A's small business department's offerings do not align with what Maaori want so need to be rethought to adapt to Maaor expectations

    Expanding the education role to narrow the audit expectation gap: exploring the expectation gap’s existence among accounting students

    Society perceives and expects more from auditor’s than what auditors can actually achieve. Society has been found to misperceive the role of an auditor, in particular, in regards to fraud, internal controls and going concern issues. Society’s differing perceptions and expectations of the auditing profession is known as the audit expectation gap. This study aims to explore the audit expectation gap’s existence among Wintec accounting students and the effect that education has on the audit expectation gap. This research intends to answer two research questions. First, does an audit expectation gap exist among Wintec accounting students? Second, what is the effect of education on the audit expectation gap? To answer these research questions, 20 Wintec accounting students have been interviewed. Ten students who have received an audit education, and ten students who have not received audit education. Qualitative data was collected from these interviews and analysed using a mixed methods approach. This study found that an audit education exists among Wintec accounting students. This study also found that education reduced the audit expectation gap, in particular, the deficient performance gap and the communication gap. However, while education did reduce the audit expectations gap, it was not eliminated. This study recommends that Wintec provides a more basic auditing education during introductory accounting papers, educating students on the role of an auditor. This study also recommends that education focuses on the practical use of an audit report, to increase student’s understandings of the information in the audit report, and how this information is communicated. Thus, the researcher believes that these recommendations will help to further reduce the audit expectation

    Structural damage monitoring based on machine learning and bio-inspired computing

    For a few decades, systems for supervising structures have become increasingly irnportant. In origin, the strategies had as a goal only the detection of damages. Furthermore, now monitor­ing the civil or military structures permanently and offering sufficient and relevant information helping make the right decisions. The SHM is applicable, carrying out preventive or corrective maintenance decisions, reducing the possibility of accidents, and promoting the reduction of costs that more extensive repairs imply when the damage is detected early. The current work focused on three elements of diagnosis of structural damage: detection, classification, and loca­tion, either in metaltic or cornposite material structures, given their wide use in air, land, rnar­itime transport vehicles, aerospace, wind turbines, civil and military infrastructure. This work used the tools offered by machine leaming and bio-inspired computing. Given the right results to solve complex problems and recognizing pattems. It also involves changes in temperature since it is one of the parameters that influence real environments' structures. Information of a statistical nature applied to recognizing pattems and reducing the size of the information was used with tools such as PCA (principal component analysis), thanks to the experience obtained in works developed by the CoDAlab research group. The document is divided into five parts. The first includes a general description of the problem, the objecti.-es, and the results obtained, in addition to a brief theoretical introduction. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 include articles published in different joumals. Chapter 5 shows the results and conclusions. Other contributions, such as a book chapter and sorne papers presented at conferences, are included in appendix A. Finally, appendix B presents a multiplexing system used to develop the experiments carried out in this work.Desde hace algunas décadas los sistemas para supervisar estructuras han tenido cada vez más relevancia. En esta evolución se ha pasado de estrategias que tenían como meta sólo la detec­ción de fallas a otras que buscan monitorizar permanentemente las estructuras bien sean éstas civiles o militares, ofreciendo información suficiente y pertinente que incide positivamente en el momento de tomar buenas decisiones, dentro de las cuales cabe destacar por ejemplo, las ori­entadas a realizar mantenimientos preventivos o correctivos si es del caso, reduciendo la posi­bilidad de accidentes, además de propiciar la disminución de costos que implican las repara­ciones más extensas cuando el daño se logra detectar de manera temprana. El presente trabajo se enfocó en tres elementos de diagnóstico de daños en estructuras, siendo estos en particular la detección, clasificación y localización, bien sea en estructuras metálicas o de material com­puesto, dado su amplio uso en vehículos de transporte aéreo, terrestre, marítimo, aeroespacial, aerogeneradores, infraestructura civil y militar. Se utilizaron las herramientas que ofrecen el aprendizaje automático (machine leaming) y la computación bio-inspirada, dados los buenos resultados que han ofrecido en la solución de problemas complejos y el reconocimiento de pa­trones. Involucrando cambios de temperatura dado que es uno de los parámetros a los que se ven enfrentadas las estructuras en ambientes reales. Se utilizó información de naturaleza estadística aplicada al reconocimiento de patrones y reducción del tamaño de la información con herramientas como el PCA (análisis de componentes principales), gracias a la experiencia lograda en trabajos desarrollados por el grupo de investigación CoDAlab. El documento está dividido en cinco capítulos. En el primerio se incluye una descripción general del problema, los objetivos y los resultados obtenidos, además de un breve introduc­ción teórica. Los Capítulos 2,3 y 4 incluyen los artículos publicados en diferentes revistas. En el Capítulo 5 se realiza una presentación de los resultados y conclusiones. En el Anexo A se incluyen otras contribuciones tales como un capítulo de libro y algunos trabajos presentados en conferencias. Finalmente en el anexo B se presenta el diseño de un sistema de multipliexación utilizado en el desarrollo de los experimentos realizados en el presente trabajo.Postprint (published version

    Analysis and optimization of distribution logistics for Just Water Company

    This report details the various factors that affect the operational efficiency of distribution logistics. The research aimed at studying the existing components involved in the distribution logistics of Just Water. Distribution logistics begins at the end of the production line where the finished product is emerged until it reaches the customers. The literature review explains the key components of distribution logistics in an organisation. This research analyses the existing components of the distribution logistics of Just Water and discusses possible improvements that can be adapted to increase the overall efficiency of the distribution logistics operation. The background of the research is that Just Water faces difficulty with delivering its products on time during peak seasons. The research tries to unveil the reason for this delay and finds that the demands for extra water-out deliveries are interfering with the normal runs of the trucks, therein delaying their regular schedule. One another cause was found to be the shortage of supplies due to slow or less return logistics. The research suggests a change in the existing drop shipping distribution model and recommends the adaptation of intermediary or multi-stage distribution networks, possibly the ‘Last Mile Delivery’ configuration in order to reduce delivery lead-time, reduce transportation costs and improve customer satisfaction

    Characterization of Neural Activity using Complex Network Theory. Application to the Identification of the Altered Neural Substrates in Schizophrenia

    La esquizofrenia es un desorden psiquiátrico caracterizado por alteraciones en el pensamiento y en la capacidad de respuesta emocional. Comprende una gran variedad de síntomas, sin embargo, no está claro que todos compartan un sustrato neurológico común. Por ello, el objetivo de esta Tesis Doctoral es desarrollar un marco de referencia desde la perspectiva de la Teoría de Redes Complejas para investigar las interacciones neurales alteradas de la esquizofrenia haciendo uso de la señal electroencefalográfica. Así, dos bases de datos independientes de registros electroencefalográficos fueron registras durante una tarea cognitiva. Nuestros hallazgos son consistentes con estudios previos al tiempo que muestran una hiperactivación del intervalo de estímulo previa a una reorganización neural disminuida durante la cognición, principalmente asociado a caminos neurales secundarios.
