A4_6 Honey I Shrunk the Blood Vessels

    Get PDF
The 1989 family film ‘Honey I Shrunk the Kids’ describes a number of children being reduced to ¼ inch high after an accident involving an ‘electromagnetic shrink ray’. This paper considers the effect this phenomenon would have on the circulatory system. By considering the blood vessels it is found that, in order to maintain adequate flow rate, the blood pressure drop throughout the body would need to increase by a factor of 200. The heart rate would also be required to increase by a factor of 200. It is not considered plausible that the body would survive this.    Â

P3_4 Honey, I Shrunk the Tank!

In the 2015 film "Ant-Man", a Russian T-34 tank is shrunk down to the size of a keychain, during which its mass remains constant. By estimating the change in inter-atomic spacing, andthe resulting increase in Coulomb repulsion between atomic nuclei, the energy required for thiscompression is found to be approximately 7.08x10^15 J. This an extremely large amount of energy, making the possibility of such a situation infeasible

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Microscale Respiration and Microfluidic Technology

    Get PDF
Insects and other terrestrial arthropods, benefitting from millions of years of evolutionary refinement, manipulate fluids efficiently, including their bodily fluids, air, nectar, and water, at the microscale in their daily lives. Microfluidic technology, though far behind insect fluid handling in terms of performance, is a rapidly developing field, which allows traditional laboratory testing spaces, occupying hundreds of square meters, to be shrunk down to chips occupying less than a square centimetre. These lab-on-a-chip microfluidic devices are positioned to revolutionize fields like exoplanetary composition testing and single cell biology studies, and can provide inexpensive, ubiquitous environmental monitoring and global health testing. Microfluidic technology, in addition, has the potential to bridge the gap between Ant-Man and the Wasp’s human respiratory apparatuses, and the more optimal ones that insects use to breath at the microscale, to help them overcome issues when they shrink in their suits like the “death zone dilemma” and a relative air density similar to that near the peak of Mt. Everest

The Fractured Memory of a Mind’s Eye

The work I create is informed by questioning reality/identity, the fractalizing planes of existence our essence occupies, and the artifacts of memory experience navigating through space time. While existing in this realm of oversaturated media and neon glow, I question the effects of pervasive data systems overloading or programming the mental software we possess. My work includes humor as a means of exploring these conventions while also displaying psychedelic surrealist imagery to help break away from the conscious prison this existence births our concept apparatuses within

Evaluation of Robust Covariance Estimation for Object Detection

    Get PDF
This work presents an initial approach to the evaluation of robust covariance estimation for object detection (localization) using the “region covariance” technique from the literature. The covariance estimation is performed using the Comedian, Kendall, Spearman and Ledoit and Wolf robust approaches for covariance, and the procedure was also compared using two different matrix norms for estimating dissimilarity. The performance was measured quantitatively using linear regression and Pareto boundaries, yielding the Ledoit and Wolf estimation with best overall performance in object detection in normal and noisy images

Interactive Visual Analytics for Agent-Based Simulation: Street-Crossing Behavior at Signalized Pedestrian Crossing

    Get PDF
To design a pedestrian crossing area reasonably can be a demanding task for traffic planners. There are several challenges, including determining the appropriate dimensions, and ensuring that pedestrians are exposed to the least risks. Pedestrian safety is especially obscure to analyze, given that many people in Stockholm cross the street illegally by running against the red light. To cope with these challenges, computational approaches of trajectory data visual analytics can be used to support the analytical reasoning process. However, it remains an unexplored field regarding how to visualize and communicate the street-crossing spatio-temporal data effectively. Moreover, the rendering also needs to deal with a growing data size for a more massive number of people. This thesis proposes a web-based interactive visual analytics tool for pedestrians' street-crossing behavior under various flow rates. The visualization methodology is also presented, which is then evaluated to have achieved satisfying communication and rendering effectiveness for maximal 180 agents over 100 seconds. In terms of the visualization scenario, pedestrians either wait for the red light or cross the street illegally; all people can choose to stop by a buffer island before they finish crossing. The visualization enables the analysis under multiple flow rates for 1) pedestrian movement, 2) space utilization, 3) crossing frequency in time-series, and 4) illegal frequency. Additionally, to acquire the initial trajectory data, Optimal Reciprocal Collision Avoidance (ORCA) algorithm is engaged in the crowd simulation. Then different visualization techniques are utilized to comply with user demands, including map animation, data aggregation, and time-series graph
