Efficient Information Dissemination in Vehicular Networks with Privacy Protection
Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a key component of intelligent transportation System (ITS). In VANETs, vehicles and roadside units exchange information for the purpose of navigation, safe driving, entertainment and so on. The high mobility of vehicles makes efficient and private communications in VANETs a big challenge.
Improving the performance of information dissemination while protecting data privacy is studied in this research. Meet-Table based information dissemination method is first proposed, so as to improve the information dissemination, and to efficiently distribute information via utilizing roadside units, Cloud Computing, and Fog Computing. A clustering algorithm is proposed as well, to improve the stability for self-organized cluster-based dissemination in VANETs on highways.
Then, fuzzy neural networks are used to improve the stability and security of routing protocols, AODV, and design a novel protocol, GSS-AODV. To further protect data privacy, a multi-antenna based information protection approach for vehicle-to-vehicle(V2V) communications is also proposed

Cognitive MAC protocols for mobile Ad-Hoc networks
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The term of Cognitive Radio (CR) used to indicate that spectrum radio could be accessed dynamically and opportunistically by unlicensed users. In CR Networks, Interference between nodes, hidden terminal problem, and spectrum sensing errors are big issues to be widely discussed in the research field nowadays. To improve the performance of such kind of networks, this thesis proposes Cognitive Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs). From the concept of CR, this thesis has been able to develop a cognitive MAC framework in which a cognitive process consisting of cognitive elements is considered, which can make efficient decisions to optimise the CR network. In this context, three different scenarios to maximize the secondary user's throughput have been proposed. We found that the throughput improvement depends on the transition probabilities. However, considering the past information state of the spectrum can dramatically increases the secondary user's throughput by up to 40%. Moreover, by increasing the number of channels, the throughput of the network can be improved about 25%. Furthermore, to study the impact of Physical (PHY) Layer errors on cognitive MAC layer in MANETs, in this thesis, a Sensing Error-Aware MAC protocols for MANETs has been proposed. The developed model has been able to improve the MAC layer performance under the challenge of sensing errors. In this context, the proposed model examined two sensing error probabilities: the false alarm probability and the missed detection probability. The simulation results have shown that both probabilities could be adapted to maintain the false alarm probability at certain values to achieve good results. Finally, in this thesis, a cooperative sensing scheme with interference mitigation for Cognitive Wireless Mesh Networks (CogMesh) has been proposed. Moreover, a prioritybased traffic scenario to analyze the problem of packet delay and a novel technique for dynamic channel allocation in CogMesh is presented. Considering each channel in the system as a sub-server, the average delay of the users' packets is reduced and the cooperative sensing scenario dramatically increases the network throughput 50% more as the number of arrival rate is increased

A Unified Wormhole Attack Detection Framework for Mobile Ad hoc Networks
The Internet is experiencing an evolution towards a ubiquitous network paradigm, via the so-called internet-of-things (IoT), where small wireless computing devices like sensors and actuators are integrated into daily activities. Simultaneously, infrastructure-less systems such as mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are gaining popularity since they provide the possibility for devices in wireless sensor networks or vehicular ad hoc networks to share measured and monitored information without having to be connected to a base station. While MANETs offer many advantages, including self-configurability and application in rural areas which lack network infrastructure, they also present major challenges especially in regard to routing security. In a highly dynamic MANET, where nodes arbitrarily join and leave the network, it is difficult to ensure that nodes are trustworthy for multi-hop routing. Wormhole attacks belong to most severe routing threats because they are able to disrupt a major part of the network traffic, while concomitantly being extremely difficult to detect.
This thesis presents a new unified wormhole attack detection framework which is effective for all known wormhole types, alongside incurring low false positive rates, network loads and computational time, for a variety of diverse MANET scenarios. The framework makes three original technical contributions: i) a new accurate wormhole detection algorithm based on packet traversal time and hop count analysis (TTHCA) which identifies infected routes, ii) an enhanced, dynamic traversal time per hop analysis (TTpHA) detection model which is adaptable to node radio range fluctuations, and iii) a method for automatically detecting time measurement tampering in both TTHCA and TTpHA.
The thesis findings indicate that this new wormhole detection framework provides significant performance improvements compared to other existing solutions by accurately, efficiently and robustly detecting all wormhole variants under a wide range of network conditions
DESIGN OF MOBILE DATA COLLECTOR BASED CLUSTERING ROUTING PROTOCOL FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consisting of hundreds or even thousands of
nodes, canbe used for a multitude of applications such as warfare intelligence or to
monitor the environment. A typical WSN node has a limited and usually an
irreplaceable power source and the efficient use of the available power is of utmost
importance to ensure maximum lifetime of eachWSNapplication. Each of the nodes
needs to transmit and communicate sensed data to an aggregation point for use by
higher layer systems. Data and message transmission among nodes collectively
consume the largest amount of energy available in WSNs. The network routing
protocols ensure that every message reaches thedestination and has a direct impact on
the amount of transmissions to deliver messages successfully. To this end, the
transmission protocol within the WSNs should be scalable, adaptable and optimized
to consume the least possible amount of energy to suite different network
architectures and application domains. The inclusion of mobile nodes in the WSNs
deployment proves to be detrimental to protocol performance in terms of nodes
energy efficiency and reliable message delivery. This thesis which proposes a novel
Mobile Data Collector based clustering routing protocol for WSNs is designed that
combines cluster based hierarchical architecture and utilizes three-tier multi-hop
routing strategy between cluster heads to base station by the help of Mobile Data
Collector (MDC) for inter-cluster communication. In addition, a Mobile Data
Collector based routing protocol is compared with Low Energy Adaptive Clustering
Hierarchy and A Novel Application Specific Network Protocol for Wireless Sensor
Networks routing protocol. The protocol is designed with the following in mind:
minimize the energy consumption of sensor nodes, resolve communication holes
issues, maintain data reliability, finally reach tradeoff between energy efficiency and
latency in terms of End-to-End, and channel access delays. Simulation results have
shown that the Mobile Data Collector based clustering routing protocol for WSNs
could be easily implemented in environmental applications where energy efficiency of
sensor nodes, network lifetime and data reliability are major concerns
