    Integration of Legacy Appliances into Home Energy Management Systems

    The progressive installation of renewable energy sources requires the coordination of energy consuming devices. At consumer level, this coordination can be done by a home energy management system (HEMS). Interoperability issues need to be solved among smart appliances as well as between smart and non-smart, i.e., legacy devices. We expect current standardization efforts to soon provide technologies to design smart appliances in order to cope with the current interoperability issues. Nevertheless, common electrical devices affect energy consumption significantly and therefore deserve consideration within energy management applications. This paper discusses the integration of smart and legacy devices into a generic system architecture and, subsequently, elaborates the requirements and components which are necessary to realize such an architecture including an application of load detection for the identification of running loads and their integration into existing HEM systems. We assess the feasibility of such an approach with a case study based on a measurement campaign on real households. We show how the information of detected appliances can be extracted in order to create device profiles allowing for their integration and management within a HEMS

    From Packet to Power Switching: Digital Direct Load Scheduling

    At present, the power grid has tight control over its dispatchable generation capacity but a very coarse control on the demand. Energy consumers are shielded from making price-aware decisions, which degrades the efficiency of the market. This state of affairs tends to favor fossil fuel generation over renewable sources. Because of the technological difficulties of storing electric energy, the quest for mechanisms that would make the demand for electricity controllable on a day-to-day basis is gaining prominence. The goal of this paper is to provide one such mechanisms, which we call Digital Direct Load Scheduling (DDLS). DDLS is a direct load control mechanism in which we unbundle individual requests for energy and digitize them so that they can be automatically scheduled in a cellular architecture. Specifically, rather than storing energy or interrupting the job of appliances, we choose to hold requests for energy in queues and optimize the service time of individual appliances belonging to a broad class which we refer to as "deferrable loads". The function of each neighborhood scheduler is to optimize the time at which these appliances start to function.     Securing the Home Energy Management Platform

    Energy management in households gets increasingly more attention in the struggle to integrate more sustainable energy sources. Especially in the electrical system, smart grid systems are envisioned to be part in the efforts towards a better utilisation of the energy production and distribution infrastructure. The Home Energy Management System (HEMS) is a critical infrastructure component in this endeavour. Its main goal is to enable energy services utilising smart devices in the households based on the interest of the residential consumers and external actors. With the role of being both an essential link in the communication infrastructure for balancing the electrical grid and a surveillance unit in private homes, security and privacy become essential to address. In this chapter, we identify and address potential threats Home Energy Management Platform (HEMP) developers should consider in the progress of designing architecture, selecting hardware and building software. Our approach starts with a general view of the involved stakeholders and the HEMS. Given the system overview, a threat model is constructed from the HEMP developer\u27s point of view.     Ancillary Services 4.0: A Top-To-Bottom Control-Based Approach for Solving Ancillary Services Problems in Smart Grids

    Power systems are experiencing a large amount of renewable generation with highly stochastic and partly unpredictable characteristics. This change in energy production implies significant consequences related to the provision of ancillary services (AS). Current markets dedicated to the provision of AS are not able to benefit from the flexible energy resources. They also cannot cope with the new level of stochasticity, non-linearity and dynamics of generation and flexibility. To overcome such issues and exploit the potential of flexibility resources, a new strategy is required. In this paper, by capitalising on flexibility resources’ potential, AS 4.0 approach is proposed, which offers a comprehensive solution for the AS provision in the smart grid era

    Modelação e Negociação de Flexibilidade em Comunidades de Energia Renovável

    The progressive replacement of traditional generation resources with intermittent resources has reduced the available supply-side flexibility and increased the need to unlock flexibility on the demand-side. At the same time, the rising electricity consumption in residential buildings requires an analysis of the potential flexibility of the loads within them to contribute to the operation needs of electrical grids. Lastly, regulations governing self consumption have allowed end consumers to form energy communities based on local electricity markets. This is an additional incentive to define strategies for trading available flexibility at local level, in separate but simultaneously integrated structures within wholesale electricity markets. The proposed dissertation work focuses on studying the flexibility of energy production and consumption by prosumers within a Renewable Energy Community (REC). The objective is to investigate how residential flexibility can be determined, modeled, and aggregated for trading in a local market created for this purpose. The work to be developed will present a two-stage model that determines residential technical flexibility and establishes a local market only for its transaction. In the first stage, the optimal scheduling of domestic devices (flexible units or FUs) for each prosumer is determined, serving as a baseline for comparison, along with the technical limits of flexibility (maximum and minimum possible consumption profiles) for each FU. In the second stage, a market model is established only for flexibility exchanges. The technical flexibility determined in the first stage is offered to the Community Manager (CM) as flexibility offer, with an associated price. This entity acts as an aggregator and simultaneously as the operator of the local market. At this level, the Distribution System Operator (DSO) submits its flexibility requirements for the next day to the CM, who is responsible for executing the clearing process. The pricing of the flexibility offered by prosumers in the market is based on the base energy tariff they are subject to, which corresponds to the cost of their optimal scheduling obtained in the first stage, without considering this flexibility. Therefore, offering flexibility becomes an incentive to reduce prosumers energy costs or increase their utility, complementing their mere participation in energy markets. A case study based on a renewable energy community with a strong penetration of emerging technologies is used to validate and demonstrate the relevance of the proposed approach in terms of determining and activating residential FU flexibility. The obtained results show that participation in the local flexibility market leads to a reduction in prosumers energy costs, around 4.5%, in average. It can be an incentive for prosumers to join RECs that would not only have local energy trading structures but also mechanisms for negotiating and sharing flexibility. In addition, it was evidenced that the impact of electric vehicle chargers and battery energy storage systems on the total flexibility offered and accepted in the market is much greater than that the impact of other small loads studied. This not only constitutes an incentive for the study of the operational flexibility of these resources but also for investments in these emerging technologies.A substituição progressiva dos recursos de geração tradicionais por recursos intermitentes tem reduzido a flexibilidade disponível do lado da oferta e aumentado a necessidade de desbloqueá-la do lado da procura. Ao mesmo tempo, o aumento do consumo de eletricidade nos edifícios residenciais obriga a que seja analisada a flexibilidade potencial das cargas que o constituem, de modo a contribuir para as necessidades de operação das redes elétricas. Por último, a regulamentação do autoconsumo, tem permitido aos consumidores finais constituir comunidades energéticas baseadas em mercados locais de eletricidade. Isto torna ainda mais importante a definição de estratégias para comercializar a flexibilidade disponível a esse nível, em estruturas de mercado local separadas, mas simultaneamente integradas nos mercados grossistas de eletricidade. O trabalho proposto para dissertação assenta no estudo da flexibilidade da produção e consumo de energia por parte dos prosumidores de uma Comunidade de Energia Renovável. O objetivo é estudar como a flexibilidade residencial pode ser determinada, modelada e agregada de modo a ser transacionada num mercado local criado para esse fim. Assim, o trabalho a ser desenvolvido apresentará um modelo de dois estágios que determina a flexibilidade técnica residencial e cria um mercado local exclusivo para transaciona-la. Numa primeira fase, determina-se o escalonamento óptimo dos dispositivos domésticos (unidades flexíveis ou UF) de cada prosumidor, o que constitui uma baseline de comparação, bem como os limites técnicos de flexibilidade (perfis de consumo máximos e mínimos possíveis) de cada UF. Num segundo estágio, é estabelecido um modelo de mercado apenas para trocas de flexibilidade. A flexibilidade técnica determinada no primeiro estágio é disponibilizada ao Gestor de Comunidade (CM), enquanto oferta de flexibilidade, com um preço associado. Esta entidade desempenha as funções de agregador e simultaneamente de operador do mercado local. A este nível, o Operador do Sistema de Distribuição (ORD) submete os seus requisitos de flexibilidade, para o dia seguinte, ao CM, que é responsável pelo executar o clearing. A precificação da flexibilidade oferecida pelos prosumidores em mercado é feita com base no valor da tarifa base de energia a que estão sujeitos, que corresponde ao custo do seu escalonamento ótimo, obtido no primeiro estágio, que não considera essa mesma flexibilidade. Portanto, oferecer flexibilidade torna-se um incentivo para reduzir os custos energéticos dos prosumidores ou aumentar a sua utilidade, o que complementa a sua mera participação nos mercados de energia. Um caso de estudo baseado numa comunidade de energia com forte penetração de tecnologias emergentes é utilizado e valida a metodologia desenvolvida. Para além disso é evidenciada a relevância da abordagem proposta em termos de determinação e ativação da flexibilidade de UFs residenciais os impactos das mesmas no fecho de mercado. Os resultados evidenciam que participação no mercado local de flexibilidade induz uma redução dos custos energéticos dos prosumidores, na casa 4.5%, em média. O impacto dos carregadores de veículos elétricos e dos sistemas de armazenamento de energia em baterias na flexibilidade total oferecida e aceite em mercado é muito superior ao de outras pequenas cargas estudadas. Tudo isto pode vir a resultar num incentivo ao investimento nos recursos referidos, bem como à associação de prosumidores em comunidades de energia renovável, onde para além de estruturas locais de comercialização de energia, existam outras que permitam a negociação e partilha de flexibilidade

    Transactive energy system

    The rising of distributed energy resource (DER) e.g. rooftop PV solar system, wind system and energy storage system, and load demand response bring both opportunities and challenges to the power grid. Coordinating decentralised DERs is important. The purpose of transactive energy (TE) system is to coordinate DERs at the distribution level and encourage consumers and prosumers to participate in electricity market by providing economic incentives. TE system enables customers and prosumers to sell the surplus energy to their neighbours. This thesis represents research on TE system in aspects of structure, technology, economics and participants. The impact of TE system in Australia’s electrical standard and electricity business mode is also explored. Moreover, based on research findings, a TE system model for Australia is proposed. The key findings of this project are: • TE System is a method to relieve electricity congestion. • The power flow (distribution level) and transaction in TE system are bidirectional. • TE system is customer-oriented and offers more choices to customers/prosumers. • The new distribution system operator (DSO) plays a key role in coordinating DERs and end-users. • Undertaking a TE system demonstration project in Australia is suggested

    Assessment of Ecosystem Services and Water Accounting Methodologies for Integrated Water Resources Management in water scarce basins

    Tesis por compendioEven though practical water resources planning and management has evolved greatly, there is still a mismatch between it and Integrated Water Resources Management. In light of the European Water Framework Directive and other European Policies related to water and sustainability, the Ecosystem Services assessment and Water Accounting methodologies have been identified as tools that can help approaching Integrated Water Resources Management. However, the existing methodologies are disconnected from the real requirements of water resources planning and management in complex river basins such as the ones suffering from water scarcity. The Water Accounting frameworks adopt a financial accounting perspective that is too exhaustive for the purpose of transmitting the relevant water stocks and flows for water managers and users in a river basin, and that entail less accuracy in the global water balance. Also, the analysed Ecosystem Assessment Tools overlook the influence of water management as well as the temporal and spatial variability of water resources and demands. This Thesis proposes methodologies for Water Accounting and Ecosystem Services Assessment which overcome the identified limitations and are especially adapted to be implemented in water scarce river basins. The Australian Water Accounting Standards are simplified to avoid exhaustive accounting for the sake of accuracy and transparency of water management information. An improved version is fully designed, and some criteria are proposed to guide its implementation at river basin scale with the purpose of improving public information and governance. A set of Integrated Water Resources Management Tools embedded in the Decision Support System AQUATOOL is tailored with economic information in order to obtain the benefits of three Freshwater Ecosystem Services considering the influence of water management with a detailed time step. The application of the resulting methodologies to different cases of study show the relevance of adopting a water management perspective in order to capture all the complexity of water scarce river basins in the results, so that they are useful for informed decision making. The Water Accounting results disclose synthesised and relevant information for water users and other stakeholders about the state of water resources and their allocation and supply during the analysed period. The Freshwater Ecosystem Services assessment results reveal helpful to classify water bodies or watersheds according to their capacity to provide environmental benefits, and to analyse the tradeoffs between the traditional water demands and the Ecosystem Services beneficiaries. Finally, the methodologies are put into context inside the Integrated Water Resources Management process that covers the target variables to consider, the tools that allow analysing the influence of management actions on them, the indicators that are more informative to water managers, and the ways to transmit the information to the general public. Furthermore, the types of analyses which can be conducted with the proposed methodologies are detailed, and illustrated with examples in scientific literature. The presented research is based on published work, which is expanded or detailed, and includes other non published material. The result is a Thesis that provides improved results and conclusions with respect to the stand-alone papers.A pesar de que la planificación y gestión de los recursos hídricos ha evolucionado enormemente, existe todavía discordancia entre la misma y la Gestión Integrada de Recursos Hídricos. A la luz de la Directiva Europea Marco del Agua y otras Políticas Europeas relacionadas con el agua y la sostenibilidad, la Contabilidad del Agua y la evaluación de los Servicios de los Ecosistemas se han identificado como herramientas que pueden ayudar a aproximarse a la Gestión Integrada de Recursos Hídricos. Sin embargo, las metodologías existentes actualmente están desconectadas de los requisitos reales de la planificación y gestión de los recursos hídricos en cuencas hidrográficas complejas como las que sufren de escasez hídrica. Los marcos de Contabilidad del Agua adoptan una perspectiva de contabilidad financiera que es demasiado exhaustiva para el propósito de transmitir información relevante sobre las reservas y flujos a los gestores y usuarios del agua en una cuenca, y conllevan menos precisión en el balance global de agua. Además, las herramientas analizadas para la evaluación de los Servicios de los Ecosistemas pasan por alto la influencia de la gestión del agua así como la variabilidad temporal y espacial de los recursos hídricos y las demandas. Esta Tesis propone metodologías para la Contabilidad del Agua y la Evaluación de los Servicios de los Ecosistemas que superan estas limitaciones y que están especialmente adaptadas para su implementación en cuencas con escasez de agua. Los Estándares Australianos de Contabilidad del Agua se simplifican para evitar la contabilidad exhaustiva a favor de la precisión y la transparencia en la información sobre la gestión del agua. Se diseña una versión mejorada y se proponen algunos criterios para guiar su implementación a escala de cuenca con el propósito de mejorar la información pública y la gobernanza. Un conjunto de herramientas para la Gestión Integrada de Recursos Hídricos que forman parte del Sistema Soporte a la Decisión AQUATOOL se une con información económica para obtener los beneficios generados por tres Servicios de los Ecosistemas de Agua Dulce considerando la influencia de la gestión del agua a una escala temporal detallada. La aplicación de las metodologías resultantes a distintos casos de estudio muestra la relevancia de adoptar una perspectiva de gestión del agua para capturar en los resultados la complejidad de las cuencas con escasez de agua, de modo que sean útiles para la toma de decisiones informadas. Los resultados de Contabilidad del Agua muestran información sintética y relevante para los usuarios del agua y otros actores interesados sobre el estado de los recursos hídricos, y su asignación y suministro durante el periodo analizado. Los resultados de la evaluación de los Servicios de los Ecosistemas de Agua Dulce se revelan útiles para clasificar las masas de agua o subcuencas de acuerdo con su capacidad para proporcionar beneficios ambientales y para analizar el equilibrio entre las demandas de agua tradicionales y los beneficiarios de los Servicios de los Ecosistemas. Finalmente, las metodologías se ponen en contexto dentro del proceso de Gestión Integrada de Recursos Hídricos que abarca las variables objetivo a considerar, las herramientas que permiten analizar la influencia de las acciones de gestión sobre ellas, los indicadores más informativos para los gestores del agua, y los modos de transmitir la información al público en general. Además, se detallan e ilustran con ejemplos en la literatura científica los tipos de análisis que pueden llevarse a cabo mediante las metodologías propuestas. La investigación que se presenta está basada en trabajos publicados, que se expanden o detallan, e incluye material no publicado. El resultado es una Tesis que proporciona resultados y conclusiones mejorados respecto a los artículos independientes.A pesar que la planificació i la gestió dels recursos hídrics ha evolucionat enormement, existeix encara discordancia entre aquesta i la Gestió Integrada de Recursos Hídrics. L'aplicació de les metodologies resultants als distints casos d'estudi mostren la rellevància d'adoptar una perspectiva de gestió de l'aigua per capturar als resultats la complexitat de les conques amb escassesa d'aigua, de manera que siguen útils per a la presa de decisions informades. Els resultats de la Comptabilitat de l'Aigua mostren informació sintètica i rellevant per als usuaris i altres actors interessats sobre l'estat dels recursos hídric, i la seua assignació i subministrament al llarg del període analitzat. Els resultats de l'avaluació dels Serveis dels Ecosistemes d'Aigua Dolça es revelen útils per classificar les masses d'aigua o subconques d'acord amb la seua capacitat per proporcionar beneficis ambientals i per analitzar l'equilibri entre les demandes d'aigua tradicionals i els beneficiaris dels Serveis dels Ecosistemes. Finalment, les metodologies es posen en context dins del procés de Gestió Integrada de Recursos Hídrics que abarca les variables objectiu a considerar, les ferramentes que permeten analitzar la influència de les accions de gestió sobre elles, els indicadors més informatius per als gestors de l'aigua, i les maneres de transmetre la informació al públic en general.
