    The aim of this work is to present some issues related to fault tolerant electric drives,which are able to overcome different types of faults occurring in the sensors, in thepower converter and in the electrical machine, without compromising the overallfunctionality of the system. These features are of utmost importance in safety-criticalapplications. In this paper, the reliability of both commercial and innovative driveconfigurations, which use redundant hardware and suitable control algorithms, will beinvestigated for the most common types of fault: besides standard three phase motordrives, also multiphase topologies, open-end winding solutions, multi-machineconfigurations will be analyzed, applied to various electric motor technologies. Thecomplexity of hardware and control strategies will also be compared in this paper, sincethis has a tremendous impact on the investment costs

    Reduced Torque Ripple And Switching Frequency Using Optimal DTC Switching Strategy For Open-End Winding Induction Machines

    Direct Torque Control (DTC) of induction machine has received wide acceptance in many Variable Speed Drive (VSD) applications due to its simple control structure and excellent torque dynamic control performances. However, the DTC which employs a two-level inverter and hysteresis controllers produces two major drawbacks, namely, larger torque ripple and variable switching frequency, which might produce a very high switching frequency (or power loss), particularly at a very low speed operation. The root causes of the problems can be identified as follows; 1) delay actions in controlling the torque (which is commonly resulted in digital implementation of hysteresis controller) causes the torque cannot be exactly restricted within the hysteresis band, and hence produces a larger torque ripple 2) inappropriate selection of voltage vector (among a limited number of voltage vectors available in a two-level inverter) cannot restrict the increase of switching frequency in the hysteresis controller, as the torque slopes regulated in hysteresis bandwidth vary during operating conditions. This thesis proposes an optimal DTC switching strategy to reduce torque ripple and switching frequency for open-end winding induction machines. The open-end winding induction machine is supplied by a dual-inverter which can offer a greater number of voltage vectors and hence, gives more options to select the most optimal voltage vectors to minimize the problems. The most optimal voltage vectors for every speed range are identified as the vectors that can produce the minimum torque slopes. By minimizing the torque slopes, the torque ripple and switching frequency can be reduced. The identification is made by investigating the torque slope behaviours and torque control capabilities for every speed range. The selection of the most optimal voltage vectors is accomplished by using a modification of torque error status and a look-up table. To obtain a constant switching frequency, a Constant Switching Frequency Torque Controller (CSFTC) is proposed without the use of a PI controller and a knowledge of machine parameters. Some improvements obtained in the proposed strategy were verified via simulations and experimentations, as well as comparison with the conventional DTC. The improvements obtained are as follows; 1) reduction of torque ripple and switching frequency with the proposed optimal DTC switching strategy, 2) a constant switching frequency with the proposed CSFTC. The main benefit of the proposed strategy is its simplicity, where the DTC improvements can be obtained without the common approach, i.e. the use of Space Vector Modulation (SVM) which involves complex control algorithms. It also shown that the average improvement about 39% and 43% can be achieved toward reduction of torque ripple and switching frequency

    Current measurement in power electronic and motor drive applications - a comprehensive study

    Current measurement has many applications in power electronics and motor drives. Current measurement is used for control, protection, monitoring, and power management purposes. Parameters such as low cost, accuracy, high current measurement, isolation needs, broad frequency bandwidth, linearity and stability with temperature variations, high immunity to dv/dt, low realization effort, fast response time, and compatibility with integration process are required to ensure high performance of current sensors. Various current sensing techniques based on different physical effects such as Faraday\u27s induction law, Ohm\u27s law, Lorentz force law, magneto-resistance effect, and magnetic saturation are studied in this thesis. Review and examination of these current measurement methods are presented. The most common current sensing method is to insert a sensing resistor in the path of an unknown current. This method incurs significant power loss in a sense resistor at high output currents. Alternatives for accurate and lossless current measurement are presented in this thesis. Various current sensing techniques with self-tuning and self-calibration for accurate and continuous current measurement are also discussed. Isolation and large bandwidth from dc to several kilo-hertz or mega-hertz are the most difficult, but also most crucial characteristics of current measurement. Electromagnetic-based current sensing techniques, which are used to achieve these characteristics, are analyzed. Many applications require average current information for control purposes. Different average current sensing methods of measuring average current are also reviewed. --Abstract, page iii

    Failure mode identification and end of life scenarios of offshore wind turbines: a review

    In 2007, the EU established challenging goals for all Member States with the aim of obtaining 20% of their energy consumption from renewables, and offshore wind is expected to be among the renewable energy sources contributing highly towards achieving this target. Currently wind turbines are designed for a 25-year service life with the possibility of operational extension. Extending their efficient operation and increasing the overall electricity production will significantly increase the return on investment (ROI) and decrease the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), considering that Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) will be distributed over a larger production output. The aim of this paper is to perform a detailed failure mode identification throughout the service life of offshore wind turbines and review the three most relevant end of life (EOL) scenarios: life extension, repowering and decommissioning. Life extension is considered the most desirable EOL scenario due to its profitability. It is believed that combining good inspection, operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies with the most up to date structural health monitoring and condition monitoring systems for detecting previously identified failure modes, will make life extension feasible. Nevertheless, for the cases where it is not feasible, other options such as repowering or decommissioning must be explored

    A Fault Tolerant Machine Drive Based on Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machine

    A fault tolerant machine drive based on permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance machine (PMA SynRM) is proposed and investigated for applications where reliability and safety are crucial. In order to achieve enhanced fault tolerant capability, the risk of permanent magnet field that cannot be turned off under fault conditions is minimized without compromise in torque density and efficiency. This is achieved by employing a synchronous reluctance rotor topology with embedded permanent magnets. Three independent, segregated 3-phase windings are configured to ensure isolation and non-overlapping between the three 3-phase winding sets. Each 3-phase winding set is driven by a standard 3-phase inverter to facilitate fast integration and cost reduction. The machine behavior under various fault conditions has been evaluated by finite element (FE) simulations. A 40kW prototype was designed, constructed and tested. The test results demonstrate the performance and excellent fault tolerant capability of the proposed drive system under various faults, including open circuit and short circuit conditions

    Detection and Diagnosis of Compound Faults in Induction Motors Using Electric Signals from Variable Speed Drives

    As a primer driver, induction motors are the most electric energy consuming component in industry. The exposure of the motor to stator winding asymmetry, combined with broken rotor bar fault significantly increases the temperature and reduces the efficiency and life of the motor. Accurate and timely diagnosis of these faults will help to maintain motors operating under optimal statues and avoid excessive energy consumption and severe damage to systems. This paper examines the performance of diagnosing the effect of asymmetry stator winding on broken rotor bar faults under closed loop operation modes. It examines the effectiveness of conventional diagnosis features in both motor current and voltage signals using spectrum and modulation signal bispectrum analysis (MSBA). Evaluation results show that the combined faults cause an additional increase in the sideband amplitude and this increase in sideband can be observed in both the current and voltage signals under the sensorless control mode. MSB analysis has a good noise reduction capability and produces a more accurate and reliable diagnosis in that it gives more correct indication of the fault severity and location for all operating conditions

    Embedded Sensors and Controls to Improve Component Performance and Reliability Conceptual Design Report

    The objective of this project is to demonstrate improved reliability and increased performance made possible by deeply embedding instrumentation and controls (I&C) in nuclear power plant (NPP) components and systems. The project is employing a highly instrumented canned rotor, magnetic bearing, fluoride salt pump as its I&C technology demonstration platform. I&C is intimately part of the basic millisecond-by-millisecond functioning of the system; treating I&C as an integral part of the system design is innovative and will allow significant improvement in capabilities and performance. As systems become more complex and greater performance is required, traditional I&C design techniques become inadequate and more advanced I&C needs to be applied. New I&C techniques enable optimal and reliable performance and tolerance of noise and uncertainties in the system rather than merely monitoring quasistable performance. Traditionally, I&C has been incorporated in NPP components after the design is nearly complete; adequate performance was obtained through over-design. By incorporating I&C at the beginning of the design phase, the control system can provide superior performance and reliability and enable designs that are otherwise impossible. This report describes the progress and status of the project and provides a conceptual design overview for the platform to demonstrate the performance and reliability improvements enabled by advanced embedded I&C

All of them had their specificities, but the last ones, starting in 2011, were more connected to relevant events organized on the topic. In fact, these events have been clearly the only international forums fully dedicated to diagnostics techniques in power electrical engineering. For this particular issue, it has been decided to separate the different submissions into six parts: state of the art; general methods; induction machines (IMs); synchronous machines (SMs); . electrical drives; power components and power converters. The second section includes only one state-of-the-art paper, which is dedicated to actual techniques implemented in both industry and research laboratories. The third section includes three papers on diagnostic techniques not specifically aimed at a particular type of machine. The fourth section includes three papers devoted to diagnostics of rotor faults, two dedicated to stator insulation issues, and four papers dealing with mechanical faults diagnosis in IMs. The fifth section includes papers focusing on different types of SMs. The first two papers deal with wound-rotor SMs, the following three papers are dedicated to permanent-magnet radial flux machines, and the last one deals with permanent-magnet axial flux machines. Regarding the types of faults analyzed, there are three papers devoted to the diagnosis of interturn short circuits in the stator windings, i.e., one dedicated to the detection and location of field-winding-to-ground faults and a paper devoted to the diagnosis of static eccentricities. In the sixth section, two papers investigate issues related to faults in drive sensors, and one is devoted to fault detections in the coupling inductors.
