Through case studies detailing how these technologies are already being used at companies worldwide, author Sinan Küfeoğlu explores how emerging technologies can be used to enhance progress toward each of the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and to guarantee economic growth even in the face of challenges such as climate change. To assemble this book, the author explored the business models of 650 companies in order to demonstrate how innovations can be converted into value to support sustainable development.     Economically sustainable public security and emergency network exploiting a broadband communications satellite

    The research contributes to work in Rapid Deployment of a National Public Security and Emergency Communications Network using Communication Satellite Broadband. Although studies in Public Security Communication networks have examined the use of communications satellite as an integral part of the Communication Infrastructure, there has not been an in-depth design analysis of an optimized regional broadband-based communication satellite in relation to the envisaged service coverage area, with little or no terrestrial last-mile telecommunications infrastructure for delivery of satellite solutions, applications and services. As such, the research provides a case study of a Nigerian Public Safety Security Communications Pilot project deployed in regions of the African continent with inadequate terrestrial last mile infrastructure and thus requiring a robust regional Communications Satellite complemented with variants of terrestrial wireless technologies to bridge the digital hiatus as a short and medium term measure apart from other strategic needs. The research not only addresses the pivotal role of a secured integrated communications Public safety network for security agencies and emergency service organizations with its potential to foster efficient information symmetry amongst their operations including during emergency and crisis management in a timely manner but demonstrates a working model of how analogue spectrum meant for Push-to-Talk (PTT) services can be re-farmed and digitalized as a “dedicated” broadband-based public communications system. The network’s sustainability can be secured by using excess capacity for the strategic commercial telecommunication needs of the state and its citizens. Utilization of scarce spectrum has been deployed for Nigeria’s Cashless policy pilot project for financial and digital inclusion. This effectively drives the universal access goals, without exclusivity, in a continent, which still remains the least wired in the world

    [EN] The present book is divided into two volumes (Volume I: articles 1–23, and Volume II: articles 24–54) which compile the articles and communications submitted to the Topical Collection ”Feature Papers of Drones” during the years 2020 to 2022 describing novel or new cutting-edge designs, developments, and/or applications of unmanned vehicles (drones). Articles 24–41 are focused on drone applications, but emphasize two types: firstly, those related to agriculture and forestry (articles 24–35) where the number of applications of drones dominates all other possible applications. These articles review the latest research and future directions for precision agriculture, vegetation monitoring, change monitoring, forestry management, and forest fires. Secondly, articles 36–41 addresses the water and marine application of drones for ecological and conservation-related applications with emphasis on the monitoring of water resources and habitat monitoring. Finally, articles 42–54 looks at just a few of the huge variety of potential applications of civil drones from different points of view, including the following: the social acceptance of drone operations in urban areas or their influential factors; 3D reconstruction applications; sensor technologies to either improve the performance of existing applications or to open up new working areas; and machine and deep learning development

    This doctoral dissertation focuses on open source platform development in wireless automation under IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Research method is empirical. A platform based approach, which targets to the design of a generic open source sensor platform, was selected as a design method. The design targets were further focused by interviewing the experts from the academia and industry. Generic and modular sensor platform, the UWASA Node, was developed as an outcome of this process. Based on the implementation results, a wireless sensor and actuator network based on the UWASA Node was a feasible solution for many types of wireless automation applications. It was also possible to interface it with the other parts of the system. The targeted level of sensor platform genericity was achieved. However, it was also observed that the achieved level of genericity increased the software complexity. The development of commercial sensor platforms, which support IEEE 802.15.4 sensor networking, has narrowed down the role of open source sensor platforms, but they are not disappearing. Commercial software is usually closed and connected to a specified platform, which makes it unsuitable for research and development work. Even though there exits many commercial WSN solutions and the market expectations in this area are high, there is still a lot of work to do before the visions about Internet of Things (IoT) are fulfilled, especially in the context of distributed and locally centralized operations in the network. In terms of control engineering, one of the main research issues is to figure out how the well-known control techniques may be applied in wireless automation where WSN is part of the automation system. Open source platforms offer an important tool in this research and development work.Tämä väitöskirja käsittelee avointa alustakehitystä IEEE 802.15.4 -standardin mukaisessa langattomassa automaatiossa. Tutkimusmenetelmä on empiirinen. Työssä sovelletaan alustaperustaista suunnittelutapaa, joka tähtää yleiskäyttöisen avoimen anturialustan kehittämiseen. Suunnittelun tavoitteita tarkennettiin haastattelemalla alan asiantuntijoita teollisuudesta ja yliopistomaailmasta. Tuloksena suunniteltiin ja toteutettiin anturialusta, the UWASA Node. Implementointituloksista voidaan vetää johtopäätös, että anturialustan tavoiteltu yleiskäyttöisyystaso saavutettiin. Toisaalta saavutettu yleiskäyttöisyystaso lisäsi alustan ohjelmistoarkkitehtuurin monimutkaisuutta. Kaupallisten IEEE 802.15.4 -standardia tukevien anturialustojen tulo markkinoille vähentää avointen anturialustojen käyttöä, mutta ne eivät ole katoamassa.     Reducing the acquisition cost of the next fighter jet using automation

    The acquisition cost of fast-jets has increased exponentially since WWII, placing defence budgets under severe pressure. Fleet sizes are contracting as fewer new aircraft are ordered, and with new programmes few and far between the methods of assembling airframes have hardly changed in fifty-years. Modern airframes rely on traditional welded steel assembly fixtures and high accuracy machine tools, which represent a significant non-recurring cost that cannot be reconfigured for re-use on other programmes. This research investigates the use of automation to reduce the acquisition cost. Its aim is to demonstrate innovations, which will collectively assist in achieving the twin goals of Tempest, to be manufactured 50-percent faster and 50-percent cheaper, through the re-configuration and re-use of automation, creating a flexible factory-of-the-future. Two themes were explored, the UK-MOD’s acquisition process, to position this research in the timeframe of the next generation of fast-jet, and the use of automation in airframe assembly globally, specifically focusing on Measurement Assisted Assembly (MAA), part-to-part methods and predictive processes. A one-to-one scale demonstrator was designed, manufactured and assembled using MAA; and from the measurement data additively manufactured shims for the structure’s joints were produced. The key findings are that; metrology guided robots can position parts relative to one-another, to tolerances normally achieved using welded steel fixtures, maintaining their position for days, and can then be reconfigured to assemble another part of the structure. Drilling the parts during their manufacture on machine tools, using both conventional and angle-head tooling, enables them to be assembled, negating the requirement to use traditional craft-based skills to fit them. During the manufacture of the parts, interface data can be collected using various types of metrology, enabling them to be virtually assembled, creating a Digital Twin, from which any gaps between parts can be modelled and turned into a shim using an additive manufacturing process with the limitation that current AM machines do not produce layers thin enough to fully meet the shimming requirement. The acquisition process requires, a technology to be demonstrated at technology readiness level (TRL) 3 during the concept phase, and have a route-map to achieve TRL 6 in the development phase, following the assessment phase. The novel use of automation presented in this thesis has the potential to enable manufacturing assets to be re-configured and re-used, significantly reducing impacting the acquisition costs of future airframe programmes. Collectively the innovations presented can significantly reduce the estimated 75 percent of touch labour costs and 9 percent of non-recurring costs associated with assembling an airframe. These innovations will help to enable a digital transformation that, together with other Industry 4.0 technologies and methods, can collectively enable the automated manufacture of customised aerospace products in very-low volumes. This is of relevance not only to next generation fighter jets, but also to emerging sectors such as air-taxis

    This book is the 8th in the Bit Bang series of books produced as multidisciplinary teamwork exercises by doctoral students participating in the course Bit Bang 8: Digitalization at Aalto University during the academic year 2015–2016. Digitalization has brought great opportunities for economic growth, productivity gain and job creation in our societies, and will change the way industry will operate. Bit Bang 8 addressed the topic of digitalization from the perspective of its economic, environmental and social sustainability. The course elaborated on the interconnectedness of these phenomena, and linked them to possible future scenarios, global megatrends and ethical considerations. How will digitalization shape our future? How can we prepare can prepare our societies to respond to these changes? Working in teams, the students set out to answer questions related to the digitalization and to brainstorm radical scenarios of what the future could hold. This joint publication contains articles produced as teamwork assignments for the course, in which the students were encouraged to take novel and radical views on digitalization.     Context Awareness in Swarm Systems

    Recent swarms of Uncrewed Systems (UxS) require substantial human input to support their operation. The little 'intelligence' on these platforms limits their potential value and increases their overall cost. Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions are needed to allow a single human to guide swarms of larger sizes. Shepherding is a bio-inspired swarm guidance approach with one or a few sheepdogs guiding a larger number of sheep. By designing AI-agents playing the role of sheepdogs, humans can guide the swarm by using these AI agents in the same manner that a farmer uses biological sheepdogs to muster sheep. A context-aware AI-sheepdog offers human operators a smarter command and control system. It overcomes the current limiting assumption in the literature of swarm homogeneity to manage heterogeneous swarms and allows the AI agents to better team with human operators. This thesis aims to demonstrate the use of an ontology-guided architecture to deliver enhanced contextual awareness for swarm control agents. The proposed architecture increases the contextual awareness of AI-sheepdogs to improve swarm guidance and control, enabling individual and collective UxS to characterise and respond to ambiguous swarm behavioural patterns. The architecture, associated methods, and algorithms advance the swarm literature by allowing improved contextual awareness to guide heterogeneous swarms. Metrics and methods are developed to identify the sources of influence in the swarm, recognise and discriminate the behavioural traits of heterogeneous influencing agents, and design AI algorithms to recognise activities and behaviours. The proposed contributions will enable the next generation of UxS with higher levels of autonomy to generate more effective Human-Swarm Teams (HSTs)

    The study of low-dimensional, noisy manifolds embedded in a higher dimensional space has been extremely useful in many applications, from the chemical analysis of multi-phase flows to simulations of galactic mergers. Building a probabilistic model of the manifolds has helped in describing their essential properties and how they vary in space. However, when the manifold is evolving through time, a joint spatio-temporal modelling is needed, in order to fully comprehend its nature. We propose a first-order Markovian process that propagates the spatial probabilistic model of a manifold at fixed time, to its adjacent temporal stages.
