Marine Fishes of the Azores : annotated checklist and bibliography : a catalogue of the Azorean marine ichthyodiversity

    Get PDF
A list of the marine fishes of the Azores is presented. The list is based on a review of the literature combined with an examination of selected specimens available from collections of Azorean fishes deposited in museums, including the collection of fish at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (Horta). Personal information collected over several years is also incorporated. The geographic area considered is the Economic Exclusive Zone of the Azores. The list is organised in Classes, Orders and Families according to Nelson (1994). The scientific names are, for the most part, those used in Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (FNAM) (Whitehead et al. 1989), and they are organised in alphabetical order within the families. Clofnam numbers (see Hureau & Monod 1979) are included for reference. Information is given if the species is not cited for the Azores in FNAM. Vernacular names are always both presented in Portuguese (Azorean names) and English. Synonyms, misspellings and misidentifications found in the literature in reference to the occurrence of species in the Azores are also quoted. The 460 species listed, belong to 142 families; 12 species are cited for the first time for the Azores. Details are given for 23 other species cited for the first time for the Azores in the Red Book of Portuguese Vertebrates (ICN 1993). Fifty-four ambiguous and/or exceptional occurrences are included in an appendix. A second appendix contains the remaining corrections to the checklist of fish included in ICN (1993). The paper concludes with a synthesis and an annotated indexed bibliography of the marine fishes of the Azores. Most references are available through the library of the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores. The publication of the present work was funded by the Junta Nacional de Investigação Científica e Tecnológica (JNICT)- Lisboa. The research was made possible through grants received from Secretaria Regional da Agricultura e Pescas-Horta (Açores), INVOTAN- Lisboa, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian- Lisboa, Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento- Lisboa. The work was developed at the Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas of the Universidade dos Açores

Distribution Of Demersal Fishes Of The Caribbean Sea Found Below 2,000 Meters

    Get PDF
Abyssal fishes of the Caribbean Sea are known from the work of six research vessels, yet only one ofthese collections has been reported. The most recent collection, that of the USNS BARTLETTin 1981, contains 13 new records of rare fish to the Caribbean, including two undescribed species. Twelve species accounts are given, documenting the new finds, along with some taxonomic changes from previous reports. Zoogeographical analysis revealed that the abyssal fish fauna of the Caribbean basins reflects a depauperate, tropical, western Atlantic subunit of a broader, circumglobal pattern of the world\u27s abyssal fish fauna

Discards from a deep-sea shrimp fishery in Angolan waters (SW Africa)

A programme of observers on board Spanish shrimp trawlers in Angola was initiated by IEO in 2018 in order to improve the scientific information required by Sustainable Management of External Fishing Fleets (SMEFF Regulation of the EU). In this context, discard studies are considered very relevant, both for assessment purposes and for obtaining information on adverse ecological impacts in marine ecosystems. Most fishing hauls performed during the observed period November 2018 to December 2019 were carried out at depths between 384 and 649 m, with classic bottom otter trawl targeting the striped red shrimp Aristeus varidens. Discards accounted for 60% of the total catch during the analysed period. The estimated global discard rate for 2019 (2.2 discard/retained catch) indicates that 1915 tonnes of retained catch produced 4213 tonnes of discards, of which a small amount is of commercial species, as A. varidens (3.8 tonnes) and Merluccius polli (153 tonnes). A total of 131 discarded species were identified, with the highest group contribution being fish (70%), followed by crustaceans (20%). The most abundant species in discard weight were Ariomma melanum, Lamprogrammus exutus, Chaunax pictus, Centroscymnus owstonii, Hoplostethus cadenati, Lophius vaillanti, Yarrella blackfordi and Ariomma bondi (all together accounting for 55% of discards). The most frequent species were H. cadenati and L. exutus, discarded in 95% of the analysed fishing hauls. Discards estimations of commercial species obtained through a long-term observers program might result in improving the assessments of main commercial species from Angolan deep sea waters

Biology And Distribution Of Species Of Polyacanthonotus (Pisces, Notacanthiformes) In The Western North-Atlantic

    Get PDF
The notacanthid genus Poiyacanthonotus is represented in the Atlantic by three species of demersal deep-sea fishes at depths from about 500-3,800 m. Recent collections have made available new material from the temperate and tropical western North Atlantic for life history study of P. merretti and P. rissoanus. Species of the genus are browsers on small benthic macrofauna including polychaetes, gammaridean amphipods, and mysids. Reproduction does not appear to be seasonal. Fecundity is positively correlated with size in P. merretti, and ranges between 1,900-5,700 ova. Fecundities are much higher (ca. 20,000-30,000 ova) in P. rissoanus and P. cha/lengeri, which attain a larger size. Sex ratios appear highly skewed. Among western Atlantic material, males were found only in P. merretti, with a female: male sex ratio of 25: l. No bigger-deeper relationship was found in P. merretti or P. rissoanus. Despite overlapping geographic and bathymetric ranges, species of Poiyacanthonotus tend to be allopatric in distribution. The amphi-Atlantic P. merretti is predominantly tropical at bathyal depths (584-2,000 m). The circumglobal species P. cha/lengeri is predominantly antitropical on the continental rise (1,302-3,753 m, mostly below 2,000 m). The Atlantic species P. rissoanus is also predominantly anti-tropical on the continental slope (500-2,875 m, mostly above 2,000 m)
