    Joint Visual and Wireless Tracking System

    Object tracking is an important component in many applications including surveillance, manufacturing, inventory tracking, etc. The most common approach is to combine a surveillance camera with an appearance-based visual tracking algorithm. While this approach can provide high tracking accuracy, the tracker can easily diverge in environments where there are much occlusions. In recent years, wireless tracking systems based on different frequency ranges are becoming more popular. While systems using ultra-wideband frequencies suffer similar problems as visual systems, there are systems that use frequencies as low as in those in the AM band to circumvent the problems of obstacles, and exploit the near-field properties between the electric and magnetic waves to achieve tracking accuracy down to about one meter. In this dissertation, I study the combination of a visual tracker and a low-frequency wireless tracker to improve visual tracking in highly occluded area. The proposed system utilizes two homographies formed between the world coordinates with the image coordinates of the head and the foot of the target person. Using the world coordinate system, the proposed system combines a visual tracker and a wireless tracker in an Extended Kalman Filter framework for joint tracking. Extensive experiments have been conducted using both simulations and real videos to demonstrate the validity of our proposed scheme

    Fast, flexible closed-loop feedback: Tracking movement in “real-millisecond-time”

    © 2019 Sehara et al. One of the principal functions of the brain is to control movement and rapidly adapt behavior to a changing external environment. Over the last decades our ability to monitor activity in the brain, manipulate it while also manipulating the environment the animal moves through, has been tackled with increasing sophistication. However, our ability to track the movement of the animal in real time has not kept pace. Here, we use a dynamic vision sensor (DVS) based event-driven neuromorphic camera system to implement real-time, low-latency tracking of a single whisker that mice can move at 25 Hz. The customized DVS system described here converts whisker motion into a series of events that can be used to estimate the position of the whisker and to trigger a position-based output interactively within 2 ms. This neuromorphic chip-based closed-loop system provides feedback rapidly and flexibly. With this system, it becomes possible to use the movement of whiskers or in principal, movement of any part of the body to reward, punish, in a rapidly reconfigurable way. These methods can be used to manipulate behavior, and the neural circuits that help animals adapt to changing values of a sequence of motor actions

    Spatial audio in small display screen devices

    Our work addresses the problem of (visual) clutter in mobile device interfaces. The solution we propose involves the translation of technique-from the graphical to the audio domain-for expliting space in information representation. This article presents an illustrative example in the form of a spatialisedaudio progress bar. In usability tests, participants performed background monitoring tasks significantly more accurately using this spatialised audio (a compared with a conventional visual) progress bar. Moreover, their performance in a simultaneously running, visually demanding foreground task was significantly improved in the eye-free monitoring condition. These results have important implications for the design of multi-tasking interfaces for mobile devices

    Egocentric Hand Detection Via Dynamic Region Growing

    Egocentric videos, which mainly record the activities carried out by the users of the wearable cameras, have drawn much research attentions in recent years. Due to its lengthy content, a large number of ego-related applications have been developed to abstract the captured videos. As the users are accustomed to interacting with the target objects using their own hands while their hands usually appear within their visual fields during the interaction, an egocentric hand detection step is involved in tasks like gesture recognition, action recognition and social interaction understanding. In this work, we propose a dynamic region growing approach for hand region detection in egocentric videos, by jointly considering hand-related motion and egocentric cues. We first determine seed regions that most likely belong to the hand, by analyzing the motion patterns across successive frames. The hand regions can then be located by extending from the seed regions, according to the scores computed for the adjacent superpixels. These scores are derived from four egocentric cues: contrast, location, position consistency and appearance continuity. We discuss how to apply the proposed method in real-life scenarios, where multiple hands irregularly appear and disappear from the videos. Experimental results on public datasets show that the proposed method achieves superior performance compared with the state-of-the-art methods, especially in complicated scenarios

    Fixation prediction with a combined model of bottom-up saliency and vanishing point

    By predicting where humans look in natural scenes, we can understand how they perceive complex natural scenes and prioritize information for further high-level visual processing. Several models have been proposed for this purpose, yet there is a gap between best existing saliency models and human performance. While many researchers have developed purely computational models for fixation prediction, less attempts have been made to discover cognitive factors that guide gaze. Here, we study the effect of a particular type of scene structural information, known as the vanishing point, and show that human gaze is attracted to the vanishing point regions. We record eye movements of 10 observers over 532 images, out of which 319 have vanishing points. We then construct a combined model of traditional saliency and a vanishing point channel and show that our model outperforms state of the art saliency models using three scores on our dataset.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1512.0172
