More applications of the d-neighbor equivalence: acyclicity and connectivity constraints
In this paper, we design a framework to obtain efficient algorithms for
several problems with a global constraint (acyclicity or connectivity) such as
Connected Dominating Set, Node Weighted Steiner Tree, Maximum Induced Tree,
Longest Induced Path, and Feedback Vertex Set. We design a meta-algorithm that
solves all these problems and whose running time is upper bounded by
, , and where is respectively the clique-width,
-rank-width, rank-width and maximum induced matching width of a
given decomposition. Our meta-algorithm simplifies and unifies the known
algorithms for each of the parameters and its running time matches
asymptotically also the running times of the best known algorithms for basic
NP-hard problems such as Vertex Cover and Dominating Set. Our framework is
based on the -neighbor equivalence defined in [Bui-Xuan, Telle and
Vatshelle, TCS 2013]. The results we obtain highlight the importance of this
equivalence relation on the algorithmic applications of width measures.
We also prove that our framework could be useful for -hard problems
parameterized by clique-width such as Max Cut and Maximum Minimal Cut. For
these latter problems, we obtain , and time

TREEWIDTH and PATHWIDTH parameterized by vertex cover
After the number of vertices, Vertex Cover is the largest of the classical
graph parameters and has more and more frequently been used as a separate
parameter in parameterized problems, including problems that are not directly
related to the Vertex Cover. Here we consider the TREEWIDTH and PATHWIDTH
problems parameterized by k, the size of a minimum vertex cover of the input
graph. We show that the PATHWIDTH and TREEWIDTH can be computed in O*(3^k)
time. This complements recent polynomial kernel results for TREEWIDTH and
PATHWIDTH parameterized by the Vertex Cover
Lossy Kernelization
In this paper we propose a new framework for analyzing the performance of
preprocessing algorithms. Our framework builds on the notion of kernelization
from parameterized complexity. However, as opposed to the original notion of
kernelization, our definitions combine well with approximation algorithms and
heuristics. The key new definition is that of a polynomial size
-approximate kernel. Loosely speaking, a polynomial size
-approximate kernel is a polynomial time pre-processing algorithm that
takes as input an instance to a parameterized problem, and outputs
another instance to the same problem, such that . Additionally, for every , a -approximate solution
to the pre-processed instance can be turned in polynomial time into a
-approximate solution to the original instance .
Our main technical contribution are -approximate kernels of
polynomial size for three problems, namely Connected Vertex Cover, Disjoint
Cycle Packing and Disjoint Factors. These problems are known not to admit any
polynomial size kernels unless . Our approximate
kernels simultaneously beat both the lower bounds on the (normal) kernel size,
and the hardness of approximation lower bounds for all three problems. On the
negative side we prove that Longest Path parameterized by the length of the
path and Set Cover parameterized by the universe size do not admit even an
-approximate kernel of polynomial size, for any , unless
. In order to prove this lower bound we need to combine
in a non-trivial way the techniques used for showing kernelization lower bounds

The Firefighter Problem: A Structural Analysis
We consider the complexity of the firefighter problem where b>=1 firefighters
are available at each time step. This problem is proved NP-complete even on
trees of degree at most three and budget one (Finbow et al.,2007) and on trees
of bounded degree b+3 for any fixed budget b>=2 (Bazgan et al.,2012). In this
paper, we provide further insight into the complexity landscape of the problem
by showing that the pathwidth and the maximum degree of the input graph govern
its complexity. More precisely, we first prove that the problem is NP-complete
even on trees of pathwidth at most three for any fixed budget b>=1. We then
show that the problem turns out to be fixed parameter-tractable with respect to
the combined parameter "pathwidth" and "maximum degree" of the input graph
Fixed parameter tractability of crossing minimization of almost-trees
We investigate exact crossing minimization for graphs that differ from trees
by a small number of additional edges, for several variants of the crossing
minimization problem. In particular, we provide fixed parameter tractable
algorithms for the 1-page book crossing number, the 2-page book crossing
number, and the minimum number of crossed edges in 1-page and 2-page book

Expanding the expressive power of Monadic Second-Order logic on restricted graph classes
We combine integer linear programming and recent advances in Monadic
Second-Order model checking to obtain two new algorithmic meta-theorems for
graphs of bounded vertex-cover. The first shows that cardMSO1, an extension of
the well-known Monadic Second-Order logic by the addition of cardinality
constraints, can be solved in FPT time parameterized by vertex cover. The
second meta-theorem shows that the MSO partitioning problems introduced by Rao
can also be solved in FPT time with the same parameter. The significance of our
contribution stems from the fact that these formalisms can describe problems
which are W[1]-hard and even NP-hard on graphs of bounded tree-width.
Additionally, our algorithms have only an elementary dependence on the
parameter and formula. We also show that both results are easily extended from

Vertex Cover Kernelization Revisited: Upper and Lower Bounds for a Refined Parameter
An important result in the study of polynomial-time preprocessing shows that
there is an algorithm which given an instance (G,k) of Vertex Cover outputs an
equivalent instance (G',k') in polynomial time with the guarantee that G' has
at most 2k' vertices (and thus O((k')^2) edges) with k' <= k. Using the
terminology of parameterized complexity we say that k-Vertex Cover has a kernel
with 2k vertices. There is complexity-theoretic evidence that both 2k vertices
and Theta(k^2) edges are optimal for the kernel size. In this paper we consider
the Vertex Cover problem with a different parameter, the size fvs(G) of a
minimum feedback vertex set for G. This refined parameter is structurally
smaller than the parameter k associated to the vertex covering number vc(G)
since fvs(G) <= vc(G) and the difference can be arbitrarily large. We give a
kernel for Vertex Cover with a number of vertices that is cubic in fvs(G): an
instance (G,X,k) of Vertex Cover, where X is a feedback vertex set for G, can
be transformed in polynomial time into an equivalent instance (G',X',k') such
that |V(G')| <= 2k and |V(G')| <= O(|X'|^3). A similar result holds when the
feedback vertex set X is not given along with the input. In sharp contrast we
show that the Weighted Vertex Cover problem does not have a polynomial kernel
when parameterized by the cardinality of a given vertex cover of the graph
unless NP is in coNP/poly and the polynomial hierarchy collapses to the third

Parameterized Algorithms for Modular-Width
It is known that a number of natural graph problems which are FPT
parameterized by treewidth become W-hard when parameterized by clique-width. It
is therefore desirable to find a different structural graph parameter which is
as general as possible, covers dense graphs but does not incur such a heavy
algorithmic penalty.
The main contribution of this paper is to consider a parameter called
modular-width, defined using the well-known notion of modular decompositions.
Using a combination of ILPs and dynamic programming we manage to design FPT
algorithms for Coloring and Partitioning into paths (and hence Hamiltonian path
and Hamiltonian cycle), which are W-hard for both clique-width and its recently
introduced restriction, shrub-depth. We thus argue that modular-width occupies
a sweet spot as a graph parameter, generalizing several simpler notions on
