    Investment Dynamics: Good News Principle

We study a dynamic Cournot game with capacity accumulation under demand uncertainty, in which the investment is perfectly divisible, irreversible, and productive with a lag. We characterize equilibrium investments under closed-loop and S-adapted open-loop information structures. Contrary to what is established usually in the dynamic games literature with deterministic demand, we find that the firms may invest at a higher level in the open-loop equilibrium (which in some cases coincides with Markov perfect equilibrium) than in the closed-loop Nash equilibrium. The rankings of the investment levels obtained in the two equilibria actually depend on the initial capacities and on the degree of asymmetry between the firms. We also observe, contrary to the bad news principle of investment, that firms may invest more as demand volatility increases and they invest as if high demand (i.e., good news) will unfold in the future.Capacity Investment, Dynamic Games, S-adapted Open-Loop Equilibrium, Closed-loop Equilibrium.

Good NEWS for GeV Dark Matter Searches

The proposed NEWS apparatus, a spherical detector with a small central electrode sensor operating as a proportional counter, promises to explore new swaths of the direct detection parameter space in the GeV and sub-GeV Dark Matter particle mass range by employing very light nuclear targets, such as H and He, and by taking advantage of a very low (sub-keV) energy threshold. Here we discuss and study two example classes of Dark Matter models that will be tested with NEWS: GeV-scale millicharged Dark Matter, and a GeV-Dirac Fermion Dark Matter model with a light (MeV-GeV) scalar or vector mediator, and indicate the physical regions of parameter space the experiment can probe.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Good News!

The International Journal of Nutrology (IJN) brings good news! Connected with the exponential advancement of knowledge in the areas of Health and seeking to contribute to the dissemination of this knowledge, starting with this issue, IJN will publish its articles entirely in English. It is already well known that articles published in the English language are significantly more likely to be read and cited by other authors, thus expanding the web of communications. This possibility is advantageous for IJN since one focus on obtaining insertion among the most prominent indexing bases. With this new and vital step, we hope to be taking another action to contribute to our future indexations and improve IJN to the top of best international journals, benefits our authors, readers, and collaborators. Good reading! The Editor

False Modesty: When Disclosing Good News Looks Bad

    Get PDF
Is it always wise to disclose good news? We find that the worst sender with good news has the most incentive to disclose it, so reporting good news can paradoxically make the sender look bad. If the good news is attainable by sufficiently mediocre types, or if the sender is already expected to be of a relatively high type, withholding good news is an equilibrium. Since the sender has a legitimate fear of looking too anxious to reveal good news, having a third party disclose the news, or mandating that the sender disclose the news, can help the sender. The predictions are tested by examining when economics faculty at different institutions use titles such as "Dr" and "Professor" in voicemail greetings and course syllabi.disclosure, persuasion, communication, verifiable message, countersignaling, private receiver information

Neutrality of narrative discussion in annual reports of UK listed companies

    Get PDF
This paper reports the results of an investigation into the neutrality of the narrative discussion of financial performance and position, as evidenced in 179 annual reports of UK listed companies. Neutrality of narrative discussion was determined by comparing the average proportions of good and bad news contained in the narrative and statutory accounts sections of the annual reports. The results of a comparison of the proportion of good news in the two sections of the annual reports suggest that the narrative sections contained a significantly higher proportion of good news than the statutory accounts sections. Comparison of proportions of bad news, however, indicates that the narrative sections contained a significantly lower proportion of bad news compared to the statutory accounts sections. Finally, the results also suggest that the proportion of good news as compared to bad news in the narrative sections is significantly higher than the proportion of good news compared to bad news in the statutory accounts section. The results are consistent with the suggestion that company management highlights good news in narrative discussions. The implications of the findings for company management, users, auditors and regulators are discussed
